Starting engine after 3+ years of no use

    First post!

    Hi all,

My raider has been sitting for around 3+ years now without being started or driven. I'm about to move house with a nice new garage for the raider and was hoping for some advice on the best way to get her moving again?

    Thanks for any help

Fresh oil, filter, plugs, petrol, clean air filter, charge the battery

Prime the engine by removing the king lead and turn it over till you see good oil pressure, then reattach the king lend and fire her up

Re: Starting engine after 3+ years of no use

Just turn the key, and see what happens

I started my 5 last year, for the first time in two years. Just connected the battery, and turned the key. It fired first time, and died. Then the second time it ran as sweet as a nut

Ok, it might not have been the best idea, but tbh, I wasn't expecting it to fire so easily! Still, it went out a couple of days later, and did 100 laps of Mallory Park!

Id crank it over by hand to make sure everything is free, then crank it on starter with king lead disconnected to get the oil pressure up then go for it. Chances are it will run fine assuming it did last time.

Os8472: do you reckon I could get away with just swapping out the petrol and charging the battery? Does petrol go off? I'm just looking to move it about 10 miles where I'm going to start restoring it.

The new Bill J: I like your style just start it!!

Brigsy, Os8472, I'm not competent with engines, are you able to point me to any instructions on how to crank it? I did a search and checked out the articles section but can't find any instructions.

    Thanks

if you whip off the front bumper there should be a plastic guard just infront of the offside wheel. Whip that off as well.

There will be a large( ish ) pulley on a 19mm bolt.

Turn that with a 19mm socket and suitable driver. It will turn the engine over ( crank it )

To crank it by hand, get a 19mm socket or ratchet on the bottom pulley on the driver's side of the engine and turn it over.

    Sure it's 19mm, it's been a while.

    Ah, beaten to it

Prob best to not try taking the front bumper off, depending on condition it may not go back on without some sort of welding/new brackets

surely the easyest way to turn the engine over by hand is jack 1 side up and put it in gear and turn the wheel thats what i do when setting tappets works a charm

Re: Starting engine after 3+ years of no use

Just get a 19mm spanner or ratchet on the bottom pulley mate! No need to take bumper off

Its quicker and easier to jack up the drivers side and go through the wheelarch

Thanks guys, I'm gonna give it a go this weekend. I'll try the jack first and if it fails I'll take off the bumper.

This is another dumb question... if I'm facing the car would I trun it clockwise or anti-clockwise or does it not matter?

    You and your quickness !

Yeah, no need to take the bumper off really. Just turn the steering wheel to the right at most.

And when you're looking at the drivers side, turn it clockwise. It it is a bit stiff, it'll save you from just loosening off the bolt.

Plenty of room with your arm if the wheel is just on full lock out of the way

You may be able to reach past the hoses and turn the crank bolt from the top... I can - but my arms are well skinny
