Re: First R5 project - Tungy

Popped into work with my head today, fitted new valve stem oil seals and uprated piper valve springs. Picked up a courtesy car for a course I'm going on next week so wont be making any progress on the 5, but got a nice Golf TSi for a week
Got the new cam and vernier pulley in aswell, roughly timed up but will be adjusting the pulley when the heads back on. New chain and tensioner on aswell.
Head should be going back on tomorrow

Re: First R5 project - Tungy

    Quick update
Heads back on, torqued up nicely
    Valve clearances done,
    Dizzy back on,
    Timing sorted out,
Heatwrapped manifold and downpipe, evil stuff.

Just gotta finish painting the engine bay (Colour suggestions would be nice, cars going to be sprayed black in the summer) and lacquer the gearbox and its ready to go back in, probably next weekend!

Re: First R5 project - Tungy

Bit more progress on the 5 last weekend.
Engine bay is now gloss black and engine is ready to go back in after I swap the old gearbox mount over. Might be going back in this weekend depending on weather. Got some new 1/2 leather seats for the 205gti and went out for a blast in the sun but can't wait to get the R5 out this summer!
Drivers side has had the jacking point removed and a plate welded into the footwell as it was rotten, new sills are on the cards soon
Will get some pics up soon.

Few more pics of bay and jacking point cut out.
Someones been naughty and tried to weld up the rust before, lots of old welding wire needles left rusted to some of the metal. Who tries to weld over rust?!

Re: First R5 project - Tungy

As today was a washout thought I'd stop being lazy and get the engine ready.
Painted box bolted on, slotted on a treat.
Turbo quickly wire brushed and back on.
Carb back on with new gaskets.

Thought about putting it back in tomorrow but then noticed when swapping the old gearbox mount over it was hanging off, rubber is knackered so need a new one, maybe next weekend

will be welding plates into the footwells over next couple of weeks and doing sills next month, dont fancy "Flintstoning" around when its back on the road.

Got final coats of lacquer on the engine bay today, nice enough day for it.
New engine mounts fitted, rocker and chain cover back on with new gaskets.
All ready to drop back in tomorrow, if I'm not too hungover

Re: First R5 project - Tungy

Been abit distracted from the 5 for a few weeks now since I bought a redtop nova
Solid white shell thats been strengthened for the redtop and a sound engine, decided not to keep it but it will be living with a close friend so will still see lots of it as it progresses from sleeper to track weapon, already been challenged to a race when the 5s back on the road.

Decided to pull my finger out this weekend and get it running, only got to fit hoses, replace fluids and cross my fingers when i turn the key.
    Few pic updates.

Re: First R5 project - Tungy

Didnt get it running because Ive lost the square adapter for the sump plug
So ive ordered a new one, in the meantime got all the hoses back on, gearbox oil in, driveshafts on, all ready to go after the oil change.
Think the red and chrome go really well with the black bay.

    looking very nice bud

I had the same issue with the sump plug, so I modded an old socket extension with an angle grinder - worked a treat

Haha I was thinking the same thing, but ended up buying a bit for it, hopefully won't loose this one!
Got it running and got a few teething problems,
    1. Vernier pulley was knocking on chain cover, even with a thick cork gasket. Easily fixed with a hammer!
    2. Dodgy no4 spark plug hole is blowing, low compression in cylinder 4, needs heli coiling ideally.
    3. Abit of sh*t coming outa the exhaust, (hopefully cause by no4 cylinder) will double check new valve stem oil seals are ok just incase.

    Pics up soon

Wonder if it still has the same head as I had with it, had to have that heli coiled

Might well be, I know heli coils aren't invincible, don't understand why so many people have a problem fitting that plug at no.4, I've fitted plugs to worse places thanthat and not done the thread in.
Ah well gotta push on with it, cracking out the timing gun this weekend, hopefully the rain will stop!

Quick update, ordered 2 new sills that should be going on this next month. £40 per side, can't wait to get them on so it's solid.
