Keep going buddy! Your doing a cracking job keep the faith too your keeping another 5 going, look forward to seeing it sometime
Have had a slight bit of progress lately
The rocker cover is on, new alternator, new water pump, turbo, heashield, carb.....
I think its not looking too bad ?????
Cracking job your doing there mate. In such a short space of time too
Looking good
Nice work fella, she'll be running soon Picture just reminded me of a bracket ive gotta fit for de-gas chamber I forgot about
Just read through your thread, you've done alot of work in a short space of time fella top work. Where abouts in medway are you from, im from Sittingbourne so not far, it would be nice to see a few more of these cars smoking about Not that mines going to be on the road this year anyway
Keep it up fella
Cheers lads am hoping to get it completed for ND but I am not confident.
Same pic, just different angle
As for where in Medway, Gillingham mate. I havent seen a 5 on the road for ages, and then I saw one parked up in Kwik Fit of all places the other week!
Picked these up the other day.
The engine bay is nearly done, am holding back pics until its finished
Looking good fella, where did you take them brackets etc to get coated?
Brilliant thread mate and a brilliant project. It's coming along great and you're obviously paying attention to detail... it's gonna be sweet when complete
Thank you very much!! I hope its going to look presentable when its finished
It just seems to take forever. Always looks messy to me as well. Quite looking forward to getting the engine bay finished and onto the bodywork.
As for the zinc plated items, I got them done through work. Sure I could help others if they needed them done.
how much would it cost to get the same amount of brackets as yours done like that?
Slight update...
My cat has been sort of helping me lately lol
Well the engine is on its way to be finished and I am quite happy with it, still a few bits to go in that the eagle eyed will spot
Any opinions?
And this pic shows that I still have a long way to go
Makes me really REALLY want to work on my stripped engine
Good effort here dude
Looks very good! where did u buy the nice OE look hoses from?
Well get working on that engine!!!lol..
As for the hoses-I took a punt on an ebay set. They seem ok to me at the mo.
Am waiting for a few parts for the engine bay to arrive so I thought I would have a go at the interior today.
One OE red carpet (Thanks Wallace) after a few hours with the wash vac thingy!lol
The old grey carpet that came out. Anyone need one? Will be cleaned too.
Another pic of the carpet before it went in. Am pretty happy with the condition.
Had a bit of look around the floor to check for no rust etc and it was as clean as a whistle. None even found in the footwells. To say I was happy is an understatement. Was def expecting to have to do a spot of welding here.
A bit of jiggery pokery and the red carpet was in. I forgot how ace the red carpet looks.
I also cleaned and installed the rear bench but didnt get a pic
Been out in the garage doing a few bits to the 5 today..feels like I have stalled a little bit with it
Had a mess about with the fog light wiring and tidied it up. Also made one decent fog light out of two average ones.
Got a pic of the interior-its starting to come along ok I think.......
I love the red carpet with standard seats in, looks bloody brilliant! :-)
That looks stunning mate.
Coops- yep your right. Renault def had it right the first time What possessed me to rip it all out in the first place eh!!!
Johnny5- Cheers mate. its comments like that which make it all worthwhile. Thanks
Off to see Mike tomorrow to get the bits I need to finish off the engine bay.
Then it will be time to fill it with coolant, engine oil and gearbox oil!!........sh#ttttttttt
Looking great mate, interior very clean and OE
Thanks. that's the exact look I am after
Bought a few bits off Mike () the other day to finish off the engine bay
But then I took a bit of a step backwards, not that it was my fault.
I popped some coolant in the 5, bled the system up etc and everything seemed fine, no leaks etc. Then i pressurised the system and could hear a hissing and water had appeared on the floor
It was coming out from near where the water pump joins the cylinder head. So I nipped the bolts up, still no joy.
By this point I was getting a spot annoyed so I removed some of the breather hoses and I could then see the actual water pump/cylinder head.
Upon closer inspection the leak was firing out from between the two parts of the water pump, not from the water pump to cylinder head joint. Not happy considering its a brand new water pump that I bought a few years back.
I took the water pump off, took it apart and found this...
As you can see, the gasket was not set correctly.
So yesterday I replaced the gasket, put the pump back on and filled the system with coolant. Pressurised it up and it seems fine
Just a bit of an annoying setback really.......
A couple of days ago, I added engine oil, gearbox oil and coolant. All ok..now
And so I took the king lead off and went to turn the engine over to get the oil pressure up.
I turned the key in the ignition and......
CLICK CLICK CLICK..
I was not happy. The starter motor just clicked. It did sporadically do this before the rebuild but not about 20 times and nothing. So a bit of fault finding was needed.
I attached a jump lead from the head to the battery earth - still nothing. So I then took the connector of death apart and fed a live from the battery to the solenoid 12V feed. It turned over
I had read the article about getting a relay and bypassing all the connections etc to the solenoid so i popped down Maplins and did this mod. It took not too much time and now my 5 turns over on the starter each time without fail. Am very impressed.
So then the moment of truth, I attached the king lead and tried to start her up...
It fired up on about the 5th turn. I was pretty happy. Although it wont idle, will only run if I keep my foot on the accelerator slightly. Prob needs a bit of carb fettling, but I didnt have time.
So hopefully sometime this week I can get her ticking over
Well done fella, getting there. Body work next then
Yep- bodywork next. Once I can get the bloomin engine to run!!
The bodywork should be easy after the engine......maybe!! Lol.
glad she fires fella, bit of carb fettling and she be reet
I havent posted for a while but the work on the 5 has been ongoing.
The engine is pretty much done! Dave Reed popped over for a good few hours and was a massive help. Finding an air leak on the carb which was causing havoc! So she now starts and runs great - well ticks over!lol. As thats all I can do with it at the moment.
The engine is not 100% but its pretty much there. Just the OE stickers to go on and the hot air feed to the air box. Also a few clips etc that I am waiting to be returned from being zinc passivated.
This is a pic I took today and I am pretty proud of what I have achieved
I also started stripping the bodywork today in prep for the respray. Took off bumpers, lights etc. When I removed the rear bumper, the passenger side rear bumper mount was perfect but when I looked at the drivers side.......
It didnt exist!!! I have bought the repair panels a while back just incase and purchased a mig welder the other week. But I cant weld! Have to keep practising then get on with this repair. As I def cant leave it like this!
So thats where I am so far, cant believe I have been doing it for over a year now!! Time flies
That engine bay looks brilliant mate
Its amazing how time flies when you're deep in a resto project, but at least you can look at your engine bay and see the fruits of all that years hard work.
Looking great mate, would you be changing over to original hoses for the ones which have got the silicone hoses on there?
Brackets look really nice on there, something I need to sort out with Mike as he has a set saved for me
Just need to put those stickers on the car
I did buy the silicone hoses for the project, and I do think they look OK. But in an ideal world I would change to OE. But my old ones are not that great.
I think I will get the stickers on once its sprayed and back together. One of the last touches
Had other things going on recently so progress has stalled again sadly.
Fantastic work looks great.
Thanks for the compliment Tony
A slight bit of progress lately. I am still stripping the car in prep for its respray. Trying to rust proof it for the future and making sure everything is in A1 condition.
Bumpers and bodykit is off, spoiler off, rear side glass removed. The windscreen is being taken out tomorrow and then I can get on with repairing the rusty windscreen surround.
It seems never ending.....
I have bought underseal for it today which I hope to get on with soon.
It is never ending
Keep it up mate............you'll get there
Had the windscreen removed yesterday- and the surround is in pretty dire condition along the bottom
I am really gutted to say the least.....................
Not got anybody good with Welding?
I have one friend who works in a bodyshop and he did put a new rear quarter on my old 5 but he doesn't seem to keen to help out this time
I am tempted to have a crack myself. What's the worst that can happen? Blow a hole through it and have to get a second hand panel to put on I guess...
get your sleeves rolled up and have a go mate. i had little or no welding experience when i got my 5 now sick of the sight of the bloody welder theres really nothing more rewarding than being able to do it yourself. and once youve got a feel for it its pretty simple
plus once you have learned to weld the silly thin metal on the 5 everything else will seem a doddle might even earn yourself a bit of cash my welders paid for itsself twice over
Great progress.
I agree have a crack yourself. i always think if someone else can do it so can i.
good luck
Well, I decided to have a crack at it myself with a varying degree of success........
The pics below show the rotten parts that i have chopped out. I sort of wish you could still get the windscreen surround panel as I would probably buy one.
All the pics below show the rotten metal I have cut out,and some I havent yet cut out. Still not too sure how to address the rotten bottom corners I have cut out....
The pic above is theone I have spent all day trying to repair. I have welded a repair patch in but I am not sure if I am happy with it. The metal blows holes so easily!!!!
I'd say get a specialist in to sort the screen surround. Looks like it needs the professional touch to get right given the number of areas needing attention.
Nothing like learning these things for yourself though
I decided to have a go myself lol. I had mon/tues/weds off work this week so I got cracking with it. It has turned out not too bad.
When I send it to the bodyshop for spraying, if they say it's crap I'll just cut it out and let them do it. Am just trying to save a couple of quid that's all.
I am quite amazed at how easily the screen surround blew through when I was welding it though!!
Metal is really thin, as with most parts of the 5. I remember TNT Hammond welded TNT Andys windscreen surround a few years ago, lots of welding abit, then grinding to retain original shape but got there in the end. Keep going fella and it will soon be all solid with metal and not filler! lol
In my spare time I had been working away on the 5.
I have put both the wings on and lined them up with the bonnet to a decent standard. I have popped on new discs and pads, although the calliper looks atrocious lol. I'll sort them out later. All of the glass is out.
I have repaired the windscreen surround to the best of my ability. I think it is fine. If not the body shop can cut it all out and start again
I have stripped pretty much everything off of the bodywork for the respray
I also picked up these brand new Valeo headlights the other day
So they should look good and neaten up the front. Need to get the Renault badge for the grille too.
And best of all- I rang the bodyshop today and booked the 5 in for its respray when I get back from holiday. So it should be going in just after Christmas. I can't wait
They dont look right, they for the mark 1 renault 5?
They best not be. They only turned up today lol. I haven't checked them with my old ones.
And the pic is upside down'! Oops
Not going to be impressed if they are wrong!!
