Friends just called me, taking clio c1j for mot, ..

first boosts/drives fine , second boosts fine/drives , into third the cars trying to cut out and missfiring.

    Overboost switch,
Poor wiring / dodgy earth / low volts to AEI unit,
    Bad dizzy cap or leads,
Plugs naff or gaps are too big,
    Mis-aligned dizzy drive

    Take your pick

Check the leads thoroughly.. The centre part of two of mine has melted, but obviosly you don't no this without sliding the boots up.. Use some washing up liquid..

no worries, ill have a look tonight , i expect it to be ignition related..

failed mot on a couple of bits but nothing drastic, brake cable, etc, biggest issue being the leaking fuel tank, struggling to get another one, so going to key up the area and fibreglass it.

Not 100% on your symptom but id say if your accelerating through 1st then 2nd then get to 3rd and its hessitant then id say its running out of fuel, perhaps blocked filter? does it accelerate in 3rd ok if you have just cruised along for awhile then accelerate?
Blocked little filter where the fuel feed to the carb is.
