I imagine it will be fairly laggy like! Hopefully my 60ft times wont suffer too much on the dragstrip. The next step will be proper ignition map and a 2 step limiter to make it more lively if all else fails I'll get a .49 rear machined to fit.

I thought MArky Mark tried one on his grey drag five & lost out as the .64 was to big mate.

Marks was journal bearing mate. I think rob@backyard ran one with gas and had pretty good results. It wont be the best on the twisties though!! My cam has been dialled in with a few degrees of retard so hopefully it will perform good at higher rpm's.

I did try the .64 rear, was normal journey style core with standard 270deg bearing.
I did however run a Big Jim downpipe (very litle restriction) and enlarged exhaust valves and ports to get the gasses flowing abit quicker, even still had full boost at 5k! Below that it come in very slowly.

Would of using a Roller bearing core made much difference? I've heard some people say yes and some say no, i know Adam L use to run a GT28RS on his Raider and spoke of it being abit laggy (less than mine though) but what made the main difference was the downpipe and elbow, going from standard style to free flowing made about 500rpm difference.

5k rpm doesn't sound too bad, i was thinking more like 6k for full boost. Ive drove a gtt with a big rollerbearing t28 with a .64 rear and it was pretty laggy, the power delivery was a lot more linear than the .49 rear.

It doesn't sound too bad but for me just felt very different and below 5k there was nothing, at 75mph in 5th i could plant foot and have 2psi! Took while to come on song and also could be one of the reason i had trouble getting it off line at Outlaw too.
Maybe if i had roller bearing core it may be different story, to be honest i'll prob never know as i'm not doing anything to that car anymore but foir me it put me off little going for another .64 rear on a C1J

I bet it has a machined .49 housing, I know CR said they could do me one when I was looking @ options for my last C1j..

With gas it would be good no doubt, without I think it may be a bit dire on the road though.

Cr turbos cast there own .49 housing for these turbos. Brilliant bit of kit with full boost around 3800-4000 with a pony cam.

GT28 and GT25 are two different frame sized turbo's, so be careful with what you choose, Jon.

In all honesty, you're pretty resticted on what you can use, unless, you're prepared to spend some money... There could be a GT25 using a GT28 comp wheel nowadays but I wouldn't know, as I stopped keeping up with the rollerbearing lark a while ago.

Re: Best place to buy a gt28r

That's the standard S15 turbo. It's the rollerbearing core all the tuners have used over the years. The turbine wheel will actually fit your exhaust housing but the bearing housing is physically larger, so it's not a direct fit. The comp housing and actuator bracket will fit fine though, from your old turbo.

That's the turbo I used on the Raider too, but with the .64 back end.

i once had a ktec 350 rollerbearing.. (t28)... was seeing full boost at around 4.5k, no earlier.. (24psi at the time)...i dont think i had an enlarged elbow at the time tho... but now i have a t28 non rollerbearing.. dont see that much difference really,, except the rollerbearing power delivery was quite a bit more erm...violent? lol

Perhaps you did. I've got a cr8p memory

I supplied/sold different spec' turbo's many years back, so maybe it was one of them that this guy bought? (his name doesn't ring any bells)

I'm fairly sure he wouldn't have been running the same spec' blower as what was on my old Raider...
