fan belt keeps coming off!

my fan belt recently came off i dont know if it snapped or just popped off as it was dark and i wasnt hanging about, it was old and needing replacing so am guessing it snapped, luckily i had a spare to get me home. bought 2 new belts slightly shorter than the original, (1 as a spare) and it keeps throwing the belt off? at 1st i thought it was just stretching as its a new belt, but it only seems to do it on WOT, am starting to think somethings out of line? but its never done it before. ant suggestions guys?

Has your engine got the little post on the left hand side of the belt helps keep it on. Another thing to check make sure the bottom pulley isn't bent

I always had problems with the modern rippled belts, they used to turn unside out and fly off., never had any probs with the old style solid ones.
As above, check the peg on the water pump, I also put an extra anti jump device down by the bottom pulley, never had a belt jump on the racers.

make sure the alternator is straight other wise it will lob the belt off. i find the secruing pin did nothing for me when mine was out and i eat alot of belts. also check bottom pulley doesnt have a dink in it as described.

Also, check that the bottom pulley is on the right way round.

What bill said! ...kept happening on my old engine lol ..untill the engine was out and markey mark pointed it out

Check your alternator bushes... a common culprit... if they are old and worn oval the alternator will be way out of line and throw your belts at high rpm. Also fit a peg as said, with a genuine OE Belt, and check your bottom pulley is straight and on tight.

thanks for all your advise, had a good look at it today and everything it straight and in line, everything seems nice and tight, no play in anything, cant seem to locate the peg your on about though is there any pics on here of it? and how tight should my belt be? ive always gone for about 10mm of play but the haynes says 4mm which is what ive set it at now, maybe my problem is that the belts not been tight enough?

or you could just cheat and fit the campus bottom pulley, it'll slow the belt down so when your at high revs it'll be less likely to come off
