    The Red 16v Project..

Well i have gone and done it again, i have brought a car that has got me thinking of a different project....

    The story goes like this...

I wanted to put a 16v engine in the silver ph1, Mr White (nice chap) happened to put his 5 up for sale which happened to have the 16v engine with all the correct bits & at a very good price as it was an mot failure...

The plan was buy the car for the engine, sell the wheels and other nice bits and hopefully have a free engine...

How ever the when i have seen the car in the flesh, it looks to nice to be broken, but does require work ( inner boot both sides needs replacing), not exactly a huge job, but the areas of the paint could do with some saving... But is a honest 5, not mint, perfect for fast road & track once the welding is done...

I also planned on selling the wheels, but there mint, all straight minimal curbing, one has very slight blemish in the gold paint... These wheels would look the nuts on the silver 5...

Charlotte is gonna kill me when she gets home..

Anyway a quick pic of the old girl at home after a nice tow home

Looks good mate. Not fancy sticking the F4R in it?

Surprised no-one's yet sniffed out the newer RS (197/200) lump & slotted that into a 5 shell.

Plenty of grunt and no turbo lag. Win.

Mart i am all about the low cost side of things.... This engine could potentially be free - plus abit of hard work

Same here, but if it's a keeper, and to keep your interest levels topped up whilst driving it I'd have thought the 2L engine would be a better bet? (especially on track).

    Re: The Red 16v Project..

Have given it a clean today, the car could easily be back on the road, but wont be winning any show and shine... but f*ck that, I want fast road & track.... and the car is perfect for that.

Am now going to see about how much a friend will charge me to sort out the welding...

But then what to do with the silver ph1, Charlotte wont let me keep both lol....

I cant keep up! lol. Last i heard you were selling the Ph1, and now you've bought another one, and still have the ph1 My mrs would murder me if I had two 5's, i'm hanging on by my finger nails owning one!!

Nice to have the option of a 16v Ph1 , or as you say get the red one on the road as a road/track day. Any idea would route you'll take?

Well the car is at the garage ready to get welded up

I thought today, f*ck it, get it on the road & then worry about getting the engine in the ph1, at least then I can c1j the red 1 and sell it on if need be, or do that to the ph1 & sell on....

Some pics of the area's that had been cut out due to rust..

some other pics of the car..

Its undercover 90% of the time, not mint enough to warrant a garage... plus I need a garage first... although could well go in the barn if I decide to keep it.

Sounds good Alastair, Shoppers you have too many eggs in baskets, in my humble opinion make an executive decision (red trackday car) and we'll get it trackworthy. Then enjoy it

I agree, the red car is 90& welded now, just needs finishing off, the large brakes are also fitted, wheels swapped over (so will be selling the gold ones with good tyres), once the welding is done going to sort out a small oil leak & then time for an MOT

Silver one will be for sale, either cheap with out an engine, or a good price with an engine (if i can find somebody to supply & fit for a good price)

I cant take credit for cutting the rear arch's out, Mat (Mr White) had done that before i collected it...

& Trackdayvalver is the man who is welding my car up & doing a great job to , its good to have an enthusiastic mechanic local who is happy to work on these cars (he also has a clio 16v which is his track/road car)

Nothing wrong with side indicators being smoothed, the fronts are visable from the sides

Rear bumper will be going back on once ashy's plates have been welded on

Alot of replacement wings didn't have the side repeater holes in them, if any MOT tester is worth his salt, the front indicators wrap around the side providing lateral lighting, but if not anything can be plopped in place to fix that.

the wheels are prima racing wheels which are replica of the williams wheels. They weigh more if im correct. Not sure if they also keep the 7j width that the genuine williams do.

    Car failed, but only on

No side indicators... Wernt arsey, just said he couldnt see them at the correct angle (he got the book out to double check... If it had been an earlier model it would have been ok)

And when you put full beam on the passenger headlight turns off????
