MMMM Maybe i am too old now!!!

    Just had my 40th birthday!!!

Am thinking now am i just too old to be driving a 5 turbo around? I have had my 5 for 20 years now bought it in 1991 from a renault dealer! we have been through alot together but i find that i rarely drive it now and i feel i may look a little 'old' to be driving what is a hot hatch!!! any other owners on here now in their 40's that feel the same??

I'm 32 and I can't wait to drive my 5 around when it's finished? I think it good to have the option to drive something a bit different around. Plus the boy racer era of fitting silly bodykits and spoilers have passed making the gtt a classic hot hatch

Re: MMMM Maybe i am too old now!!!

Phil im 36 in a month or so, i have just built mine, cage and bucket seats etc, I sometimes have to tell myself im getting old, stop wearing tracksuits and listening to oldskool rave My partner sometimes wonders what on earth she has done lol.

You should see me tyring to get in and out of mine, its a hoot, but i love it.

Im guessing your car is standard, so no real boy racer issues. Like mentioned they are seen more as a classic now.

What looks sad is middle aged men driving around in a mx5 or boxter with their shiny heads and there roofs down.

The gt has a funny effect, different to other 80s ikons, if you had a series 1 rs or cosworth im sure you would not feel so silly driving it around on a sunday, or maybe thats just me.

If im still hooked on gts when i hit 40, im going for a mint electric blue, totally standard.

I hope you do not sell, get some pictures up though

Re: MMMM Maybe i am too old now!!!

I've had the same thoughts in the past week since I bought my new 5, I turned 33 today, and whilst thats not 40 i still understand what you're saying.

Truth is though, it really makes no difference what car you drive at any age, as long at it's what you want. I'm not out to impress anyone in my 5 (anymore) but i bought it for me as I love them. Everyone has an opinion, but i bet for every idiot thinking 'old man in hot hatch' there's another person thinking 'wow, retro classic, fair play'

    I hope i'm driving a 5 when i'm 50, if it hasn't rusted to dust by then

I gave up on 5's at the ripe old age of 35 as I wanted more room, aircon and power steering.
Thats why I moved up to the Megane Coupe and am Maxi-ing and turboing it to get back to the wide arches and boost that I love and you can't get with todays cars.

I'm never getting rid of my car (36 BTW) and Millie & I are driving from the church to the reception in it after our wedding this Saturday!

It makes me laugh when people post threads like this. You are getting older every day but so is your car and what you remember about the 5 back in the day is not what people associate with the 5 now-a-days!

    Live the dream mate!!

you have to get old but you dont have to grow up

IMHO the older you get the more you should make time for the things that make you feel young

ill still be rolling in a hot hatch when im 90

Re: MMMM Maybe i am too old now!!!

I have just got home after an all day meeting in the office. As I was saying my goodbys to some colleagues in the carpark, I looked around as they got into their new Audi A5s, BMW 5s and then my eyes met with my humble Renault 5 GT Turbo, dwarfed by these modern beasts. After a long day, it still managed to bring a wry smile to my face!

Whilst I am not 40, each journey in the little Renault still manages to temporarily transport me back in time to a happy place when I had few responsibilities and life was really good!

Im not sure thats what you said at the last supper!

Im 36 in a couple of months and can safely say I will never get tired of my 5. Its my escape car. If Im stressed I jump in and go for a blast. Like Matt says, its in the blood.

It goes to show what age can do as I actually enjoy tootling along at 70 or there abouts being overtaken by everything. I remember when I was younger seeing the older cars at that time cruising along the motorway at 65/70 enjoying the ride. Never did I think that would be me and here I am....

    Love it!

Yep, it's defo in the blood.

I'm fairly sure I'll end up with another GTT soon (would love to own Whitey again ), as I can see my Evo ownership days are coming to an end.

To quote a dude from the Camper van/beetle crisis series'

"You have to have a hobby..... If you don't have a hobby then your cheating on your wife"

I'm 26 and most of the boy racers dont know what the 5 is! I don't think i'd ever get rid of me 5 regardless of age!

Good motors. You going for the Abarth model?

Not much cop at welding, and although I'd love another track-based GTT, I think that part of my life is starting to come to an end, hence looking more towards the o.e examples again...which Whitey was

Hi, my name's Billy, and I'm an addict

I've not been without a gtt for the last 12 years, and I'm a little bit older than that! I love them just as much now, as when I first drove one. Although I've only used mine once in the last 3 years, it's still so much fun to drive. I think using it so little, makes me enjoy it that little bit more

I have thought about selling it, because I barely use it, but I can't imagine life without a gtt

Forget about being too old to drive one. I think you might see more 'older' people starting to buy them again, as mid-life crisis cars. People wanting to relive their yoof

Your never to old, I think you will regret getting rid

Just to ad, in my search for a 5 GTT it had to be a 1990 as thats when I was born, so much that the first one i had (1989) was sold as it didn't sound right.
