You definitely don't want anything too thin for our older C1J engines. I would lean towards 15/50. This subject has been covered quite a lot previously, try banging in a search?

In my opinion '5' is too low for this type of engine, although if the engine is nice and tight and in good nick then you may well get away with it.

10w40 or 15w40 would do nicely, semi synth preferably. Even 20w50 if the engine internals are very very worn and noisy although at that point it would probably warrant a rebuild.

I use Mobil 1 SuperSyn 15w50 in mine, don't really need the 50 thickness, will probably change back to 15w40 on the next change.

Just so u know, halfords oil is Comma oil but in their own tubs

Just use a Comma 15/40 semi synth, did the job on my c1j just fine, never had an oil related problem that was down to oil itself

I thought Halfords was castrol oil?

But we sell comma oil in my work place and always use the stuff in all my cars with no issues.

Re: what oil for modified engine>?

On a mildly tuned c1j any old 10/40w semi synth will do really. Buy the best you can afford not the cheapest

I use Mobil super 2000 10/40w semi synthetic in my tungy gtt, seems to be really good stuff and cheap. The oil is always nice and clean when changed at 3k miles which must be a good sign. The cheapo 10/40 used to go very black in the same amount of miles.

In my van i use miller's cfs 10/60w fully synthetic, the engine is fairly modified & driven hard. Whether or not this is overkill is another question, but the motor is holding together very well. Oil pressure never drops off when hot like it used to with normal 10/40 semi...

Also a very important thing is fit a geunine renault oilfilter, or a fram ph4546 as some filters (the generic larger sized ones mostly) can affect the oil pressure a canny bit..

The only reasonably priced oil to bother with is Mobil Super S 10 / 40!!!! Stay away from comma as it goes very thin when hitting high temps.

Never a truer word said, Brigsy is all over this like a tramp on hot chips. Millers CFS 10/60 doesn't make mine breath anywhere as bad either, pricey stuff though, but ultimately the best. I can get it at 45 squid a drum at the mo, but he only has a few left in stock.

Re: what oil for modified engine>?

in every one of my engines ive built ive used 10/40 semi synth and sometimes 15/50 semi.

the thing that strikes me is that you dont here of many folks changing from the std semi to the fully synth.?

surely fully synth will be better regardless of how old the engine design is providing the engine is in tiptop condition to start with.

why would a semi synth of the same viscosity be better than a fully synth of the same viscosity?

isnt fully synth slightly thinner? if so,can one not select a higher viscosity rate?

    oils always been abit

The subject of Oil is long and complex and would take forever to explain. Synthetic Oils are 'by design' made to perform duties over specific range of conditions with exacting tolerances and Semi-Synth is 'by design' made to perform duties over a specific range of conditions to less stringent tolerances. This is why Fully Synth oils generally cost more.

The question should be, 'does that specific range of conditions best suite our C1J engines?'

The other question I would ask is 'has anyone had an engine failure they can put down to poor oil grade?'

If people change there oil more often, I doubt the grade is as important. i.e. A cheap oil being changed every 1500 miles will probably serve the engine just as well as an expensive oil being changed every 3000 or even 6000 miles?

    Just my 10 cents.....
