    ticky tappity cj1

ive done tappets on lots of n/a push rod engines over the years but never had one keep ticking

all tappets have been set to the haynes manual and done in the order stated
but when idle the car ticks it sounds like 1 tappet but when driving the tick dissapears until i take my foot off the go pedal

you can also notice this at idle with the exhaust note it sounds like a missfire when tick sounds even with a worn cam i presume there would be no tick due to the tappets being set corectly wouldnt it just cause a lack of a/f getting into a cylinder

    its just bugging me ??

is this normal for the cj1 ??

The values stated in the Haynes manual are wrong mate, they should be 0.15 inlet and 0.20 exhaust, same as a n/a C1J :-)

Check the pushrods are straight. With a half decent nick standard engine/cam you should be able to get it sewing machine quiet

If its a hot cam you might never get the top end quiet, my piper 285 makes my c1j sound like an old ford kent engine with the valve clearances set properly, got to live with it

unless of course you've worn the bottom of the cam follower out and its mushroomed in the block. - no matter what you do it still ticks loudly. cam lobe will be fubar'd too.

If its a worn cam you should be able to see some light scoring on the lobes.. All depending on how much its worn by of course.

The rocker contact faces wear and the followers go concave which mean a tappity engine. Machining and some new followers might sort it.
