The story of your first r5

What brought you into the R5 scene, For me I blame Alex with his white r5 from burton, My gf bought a 205 xs 1.4, which I drove for over a year, the headgasket went, so i looked at how to get more power out of it, I had a little headwork done and due to the silly light weght and the added power to the rev happy engine the car was keeping up easy with 1.8xr2i's, and so my beginning of french cars had begun, from that i brought my 205 1.9 gti, and i always liked alexs r5, i watched them for a while until i saw one on ebay that looked like it needed saving, so i brought that.. And here i am today.. just wondering how other people storys unfold. needless to say i still have the 205 xs and love it, .

I got asked to fix a gtt, suspected shagged turbo. Went down to look at it & ended up giving £100 & a 1.1 fiesta in px.

Before that i had various 11 turbo's for 3 yrs so i knew what i was in for Previously was a vauxhall/ford man before that

when i went to uni, there was a guy who had a beautiful renault 5, which he'd done in a williams style (williams gold wheels, and blue respray). It has a prima bodykit, and he reckon'd he'd been through 3 engines and 7 headgaskets. The car was wicked, went like stink and i knew i wanted one...

5 years and a 205gti, 19, fiesta, justy later i bought my first 5gt (which i just sold last week)

I'm still a youngun (19), and when I was like.. 15 and reading Max Power (), I was amazed by the specifications of the car. Small, cheap and fast! Also, loved the way they looked. My love for them from then on continued, and when I was 16 I bought my first 5. Obviously for my first car I couldn't afford insurance on a GTT, so I bought the next best thing.. a 1.4 Campus GTT lookalike. Miss that car like hell But yeh, just went downhill from there.

Re: The story of your first r5

Looking around for cars when I was 17, it had to be small engined and in size. My brother had a nova and I didn't feel safe in that. Tried a fiesta and knees were above the steering wheel, AX I couldn't fit my feet on the brake pedal to press it down. All these problem. Then found a Renault 5, local to me, sat in it, seat went far enough back, and I could use the pedals. So purchased the car. First one went in a crash then head gasket went on second. 3rd one outlasted me, however purchased full GT body kit for it to make it a look-a-like. Week last the bloke I purchased the kit off from said that his GT Turbo is for sale, however its stuck in France with a head gasket gone. He towed it back, we decided a price and thats where it all began. Still got my first renault 5 GT Turbo. Things have changed slightly though

    Good thread idea

I first fell for the 5 when my brother in law asked me to find him one. I knew nothing about them other than that i thought they were a cool fast hatch. It was 1998 IIRC and i was driving a scirocco GT. Anyway, found him a black, standard GTT with about 60k on the clock in our home town of Exeter - how lucky was that!?! Needless to say he bought it immediately. He asked me to fit a dump valve for him so i had the car at my disposal. He said i could have a drive and, well, that was it. I wanted it. It had some custom exhaust on it that sounded like thunder and popped on over run. You just didnt need a stereo in that 5.

So, come 2000, he decided that he wanted a rs2000 (?) so it was up for grabs. Deal done no questions asked on price. whatever he wanted lol! (1600 iirc) Its history now and the one in my profile album with the clio alloys on it

Yeh, I got bored of the 200SX, because I don't see the point in drifting, and going off what the owners club is like, that's all they're good for. I now want a 300ZX as well as my GTT. Saving the pennies

Yeh.. Pretty much the same reason I went for a 200SX. Wanted to try Jap. I went off the styling of them though, and I had a few hairy moments in it. It was a nice car, and it was fast as well, but I missed the 5. Now I would find 2 cars more affordable, I want jap again, but I like the 300zx. Lots of power, good looks, and they are supposed to handle quite well as well

First car was a 205 rallye, soon got a decient job and could afford a stupid insurance premiums....

spent 6 months looking for the right car, ended up buying a tungy ph2 from a guy 10 mins from my house. Had a disagreement with a lampost so that was that.

    then came

    uk spec sunny gti-r
    1256cc 83 chevette
toyota torago people carrier (driven 15,000 miles accross oz)
Holden Jackeroo 4x4 (same as a trooper in this country)
    couple of ****e mk3 festas
    205 diesel
and now back to a ph2 r5, honda C50 cub and a zapcat when the waether is nice.

Re: The story of your first r5

A good friend of mine had a genuine raider. It was a jewel,I fell in love with it..But there were only 7 imported in Greece and 3 of them were "tuned" over cliffs,on walls and telephone poles..
One day I saw a raider coming out of a garage near my work.I kept on seeing it almost every day when I drove by with my Datsun 120Y(Grandpa's car). One day I stopped and asked if he was selling it.He refused and told me he is keeping it for his son. After a few years I saw it again, his son was driving.I asked him again. Are you selling it?He told me no my father gave it to me as a present and I would rather sell my kidney than my raider.A year after I bought it for 3000 Euros..It was completely standard and had over 340.000 kilometers on it. but it was in quite good condition.I crashed it when a mother with an Opel Astra decided to drive in my lane from the opposite direction on a curve .So bye bye raider..The I bought the black I have now but the feeling I had with the raider had no match.

I had recently shafted my Jetta GTi and saw an R5GTT in the local paper for £995 o.n.o. I offered the guy £800 and he snapped it up! I didn't see it myself, but got my missus's dad to go for a ride in it, even though he's like 60 (at the time), he said it was good...FAIL. Paint work had faded terribly, suspension was bodged, dump valve kept blowing off, crap idle, water leak at the pump etc... Didn't cost a lot to put right but for some unknown reason I sold it for a BMW Now I want one back

Re: The story of your first r5

After driving my little red Vauxhall Nova 1300 for 9 months the engine finally gave in and i was gutted. My dad bought me a cheap surprise replacement car. I knew nothing about cars.

It was a Renault 5 campus and i wasnt that keen on it until i drove it. I didnt know anything about it and wasnt used to looking for car bits online. One day i needed some bits and i thought i would type the name of the car in just to have a look around.

A picture of a GTT came up and i stood there in utter silent amazement !! I didnt know there were turbo versions, or any other versions other than the one i had !!!

Then came a LOT of reading and before i knew it, i was addicted to the Mk2 Renault 5.

Re: The story of your first r5

i first set my eyes on the gt turbo when i was still at school[going back 15yrs].
id always see the older lads picking the girlfreinds up from school in them.

what made me like them wasnt anything to do with performance[that was a bonus] what i loved about them was there looks but i loved the sound even more.

so after passing my test when i was 18 i went and bought a phase 1 for £1000 which had cheesy 3spoke rims.

thats where everything went wrong as i didnt know anything about cars in general.

the car would go nowhere fast, was always loosing all its coolant within 20mins of driving. and as i didnt know anything about them and cars in general i would just keep refilling the coolant with the bottles of water i used to drive around with. how was i to know the head was warped causing the loss of coolant .

the thing is i ran the car like this every day for a year from the word go!

eventually the turbo catastophically failed. i then had a new turbo fitted without getting the cylinder head sorted wtf!

after getting the turbo fitted i decided to scrap it brickwall
but before i got around to scrapping it i bumped into a local guy who had a nice electric blue ph2. so i gave him £2000 and my 5 .

now with that rip off deal out the way[i didnt know any better] at last thats where the fun started "with my 2nd gtt".

i had some random kent cam fitted with a stage 50trillion turbo and the car bloody flew. i also had it kitted with a prima tarmac kit and slammed it on 15" slealths. the car looks nice.

i used to rag that car to death and was forever annihilating local cars . i ended up stripping the car for spares.

my preferences have since changed and a std looking gtt is what i like now.

I'm only kidding. The club used to be the R5GTTOC (or something) but then it changed to just RTOC, for all Renault Turbo Owners. But when it's refered to as a GT Turbo owners club, some people don't like it

my first 5 turbo...16 years ago..just in case your wondering, yes i am an OG...(old git)...on a E plate with a straight through stainless..paid £1600 for it, in 1992 that was a bargain...and bloody quick back then, even without any mods..use to love ragging the sh*t out of it, all that torque steer, lol. every time i went out in it, it would go wrong, nothing that could`ent be bodged by the side of the road....did`ent have a licence at the time, it got a bit hot (not the engine), so i sold it for a grand..couple of years ago i owned G363 FJT...a tungy..she was mint, but i got banned so i had to sell...got another now, probably the best 5 i`ve had..i think i will always have a 5 in my life, keeps me smiling

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

Back in early 1997 I was in the market for a new car, all my mates had Escorts, Fiestas and Novas so I decided I wanted something different that no one I knew had owned before. Looking thorough the local paper I noticed the local Renault dealer had an F reg 5GT Turbo in silver for sale so I went along with my Dad and bought it for around £3500, it had 55000 miles on it and I loved it. I decided to find out more about the 5 so I joined the ‘GT Turbo Owners Club’ as it was then and have been a member ever since. Then one wet night in November that year I had an accident in it, I was pulling out of a junction turning right which was on a bit of a blind bend and got hit on the rear quarter by someone going a bit quicker than 30mph speed limit in the village I lived in. I was gutted and thought about getting it rebuilt but it wasn’t worth it so I eventually sold it to a Reanult parts specialist in Melksham for £900.

The next week again looking in the local paper I saw the local Renault dealer had another 5 GT Turbo for sale, this time a G reg in red with 48,000 miles on it. After a quick test drive I knew I had to have it and paid £3200 for it. I’m only the second owner and I’ve owned it now for nearly 11 years. Its just passed the 114,000 miles mark but has failed an MOT this weekend as it has a rust problem on the sills and also the front inner wheel arches are held together by rust and cable ties, so I have to decide what to do next, ideally I’d like to get it back to showroom condition…

Re: The story of your first r5

I bought my 1st GT Turbo back in 1998, it was my 4th car after driving a Mk1 fiesta when i passed my test, then a 1.6 GTI and a Mk2 Fiesta XR2. I fancied something different and after trawling the pages on the Autotrader magazine i came across a Tungsten grey R5 GT Turbo in Uxbridge, i called the number and organised a time to go and have a look at it on my own 1st.

A chap in his 50s owned it but he was away at work so his wife showed me the car which was in their double garage, once the electric door went up i could see this mint grey 5 sitting there on it's own. Standard in every way, sitting on the correct Michelin MXVs (£90 a corner back in the day) super clean inside and out, not a mark on the bodywork, all panel gaps correct showing it's originality. As he was away i couldn't take it for a test drive but on looks alone i was hooked so i agreed to come back with my friend who was a mechanic when her husband was back working abroad.

Second visit, he was home so we went out for a drive around the local area, the way it picked up speed was unbelievable and effortless. It would just glide when the little T2 came on boost. Remember this was in 1998 so the car was only 7 years old, everything felt tight, the seats were immaculate with firm, solid bolsters and amazingly clean. Every lightbulb worked interior wise and all the dash illuminations came on when needed. Receipts over the years showed that everything was done at Renault although the car was in need of a clutch change at the time of buying as it was starting to slip, that was the only wrong with the 5.

We agreed a price of £2750 and i drove it home from Uxbridge back to Southend, i soon noticed the difference in power when we hit the sliproad on the A40. My mate was behind in his XR2 which at the time i thought was pretty quick, well the 5 just drifted off into the distance and he couldn't keep up, talk about putting a smile on my face, this car was awesome!

Bare with my lack of knowledge on the GT Turbo, i panicked when the BOOST pressure gaugle needle started climbing! I thought there was something wrong with the car and pulled over, my mate laughed at me when i explained to him what was going on

My first 5, and still my best, i had another clean tungy a couple of years back which took me back to my days of owning my 1st GTT, std boost again, exterior and interior bar the seats coming from a Raider

My first and current five, interest started back in 2002/3 I was 18 and had a clio 1.2 Clio Grande, I came to a set of traffic lights just outside town , and up pulled a r5gtt in Tungsten Grey, being young and stupid and not to clued up on their performance had a little go against one, needless to say I got my arse handed to me, spectacularly and thats when the interest began. I originally started looking at 106 gti's because my sisters boyfriend had a Vts and at the time it was quick, but more shameful was watching Ali G at the same time and a week later I bought a low mileage 50000 mile red five which was a tad rusty (purely for the mileage I didn't even like red cars tbh)and here I am 6 years later with the same car all be it no original panals. But Heyho.

my first car was a nova sr, it never made it on the road, so then came the nova gsi, smashed that up at a road about, then the xrpoo smashed that up coming out of round about, then 205 gti 1.9 with cams, didnt like that much sold it, then back to the novas, couple more gsi, then I put a 2.0l red top in it that was quick, broke that for parts, brother got a nova turbo, I didnt have the money to buy one of them 5k, lol, out of my league, so off to kent to pick up my r5, 500 note it was abit of a SHED, clutch cable broke on the way home, so left it at the petrol station, at the round about to the a12, went back the next day fitted a new one made it home, from that day on its been a love hate afair, but im keeping it for good, it would of been cheaper, if I had of got a loan ,and brought a better car to begin with, but were is the fun it that, I no just about every nut and bolt on the car,we are best of frends now,and it get a away from the missis

i had a red campus look-a-like as my first car when i passed my test because of insurance rates. sold that and bought my first KA, brand spanking for a well good deal, 2 years after i traded in for my sportKA which is still here. i still wanted another 5 but i could never get the insurance for a GTT untill i hit 21 so i set about looking for a phase 1 in the leccie blue and after 11 months i found a right shed of a 5 in a barn with a freshly built engine. a drive to cornwall and 500 notes later i had my favoritest car

Re: The story of your first r5

i had a black gtx first of all bought it off the old ladys fella when i was 20, he was the second owner and realy looked after it.

    was an absolute minter!

sold it to some stupid wench (so i could get some suspesion for the raider) who ruined it!!

soooo wish i had kept hold of it!

when the need for speed took over i was torn between a vw corrado g60 and an gtt?? the insurance group of the g60 was the deciding factor in the end i couldnt get a quote for under 3k!!

picked up the trader saw a raider for sale went to look at it and bought it!
was in mint nick a young lad owned it but he hadnt even passed his test and mummy and daddy had spent a fortune on it for him! (well in hindsight me! lol)

i remember the test drive like it was yesterday! the lad used his bosses trade plates took me to an industrial estate an let me have a go.

set off put it into second gear and gave it the old lead foot! 22psi i was sold! lol

Re: The story of your first r5

There were a few lads around my area with them when I was 15/16 and I bought a ****ter of a 5 before i'd passed my test. I ran it into the ground, and to be honest, i've been doing the same with every car i've owned since. Except my GTiR, I actually tried to take care of that, and my Escort RS turbo, which blew the box in the first hour of owning it. It seems luck is on my side...

Re: The story of your first r5

Ive always like the GTT ever since i can remember, seeing them in mags etc and occasionaly on the road. Then randomly i saw one on a driveway near me every day so knocked on the door and bought it !!!! Didnt know anything about them, bought it blind. Drove it for 6 months till the MOT ran out then found out it was rotten as a peach ....Jesus (Matty) then bought it and sorted the sills, the car still lives on with him (150k later !)

My current 5 was found by Jesus dumped in a garden for 5 years, i bought it in Sept 2007 and its the daily driver

speaking of finding cars in gardens... there a guy near me thats had his 5 since i was at school[15yrs ago] and its just been sat in his garden for around 7years he hasnt touched it and its looking really sorry for itself now, its red with a full prima tarmac kit on it with quad lamps at the front and rear, and some nice tsw stealths.

ive told him ill take it off his hands for £200 but he is simply asking for stupid money circa £800 wtf!. the cars rotten and the scuttle panel is non exsistant but is good for breaking.

i didnt no about gtts back then but i new as soon as i seen what ever it was i had to have 1 a few weeks later in the local paper.
there was a renault 5 gt turbo for sale so i asked my old man what 1 of them was
and as he explained i thought it had sounded like a similar car.
that i had seen weeks earyiler so i thought id go have a look as it wernt that far away
so i got there and it was the same car.
i heard loads of people had been to see it but no 1 had bought it because a expected turbo.

My first car all those years ago was a Mark 1 Renault 5 GTL. Beautiful little car! We'd had it in the family since new and 17 years later I got hold of it! So as you can see Renaults have been in the family for as long as I can remember! My first experience with a GTT was when friend of mine in school went to Renault to test drive one. An immaculate red phase 2 and I went with him and instantly fell in love.I knew about them through adverts and of course owning the Mark 1 but Id never been in one....15 years later Im on my second (had this one 9 years) and I'll never sell her. Theres just something about them..

Re: The story of your first r5

When i was 15, my dad's next door neighbour had a black one lowered with a set of 15's and black and yellow leather, i wanted it, looked cool as feck. when i past my test at 17, i wanted one but the insurance said no, so i saved up for about a month and worked my arse off to get £650 together. I decided i would try and make some money on one instead and bought a nice f plate grey one pretty standard (F549 NPK, if anyone on here has it i'll buy it off you!) Instead of selling it, i loved it too much and i let it sit for a few months till i was 18, the insurance was still high at £1850 a year but i didnt care, since that day i have been 5 mad and now at 24yrs old and have owned 25 of them in total, some of which i bought to fix and sell on, but most to drive! I did once have 7 at one time 2 grey, 2 red, 1 black, 1 white and 1 painted electric blue. Currently just about own 3. Well 2 and a deposit on a third

if i didnt move to where i am now im sure i would of been a fiesta man

Re: The story of your first r5

I went to Burton Tech College in the early 90's & one of the older guys on the course had one & offered to take me out in it one lunchtime. (G reg Tungy one)

Went out in it & just couldn't believe how fast it was & really threw you back in the seat!!! From that point on I wanted one but being the 16year old i was knew it was a bit out of my reach for a while.

Practically forgot about it untill i was about 19 & a lad who was a year older than me & lived in the same area as me got himself a Red Phase 2 model & told me that he'd managed to get it insured fairly cheaply TPFT (£600 odd)

The MOMENT I heard that I figured I could get the same price for Insurance so the old Cavalier SRi 130 was put up for sale & my First Raider was purchased H494 AEA (Later re-registed to H470 KAV becasue of my Private Plate)

I still to this day think that car is faster than my current raider as it REALLY used to kick you up the @rse when it went on boost!!

It Never let me down & was as good as gold, i just thought i grew up & bought a Cavalier Turbo to replace it........ about 6 years later I Sold the Cavalier Turbo & Bought the Raider I have now!
