    S14 or Gtir turbo ?

Anybody tried either of these on the F7P/R turbo conversions ?
Just wondering which to go for, the GTir has larger wheels & a .86 rear housing I think & the S14 a .64 ?
Going to be running standard skimmed pistons & about 15 psi boost.

Make sure you get a T28 and not the early T25 off the 200SX Steve.

With the .86 it'll feel a bit more like a GTT with a T28. the 0.64 will be pretty responsive on the 1800cc.

Yeah cheers Mark, I did know that already though from owning a Rover.

Hmm, I know what you mean Chris, but I wonder if it will feel pretty slow/lazy @ a bar on the 1.8, if I was going to run more boost I feel it would be a better option for sure over the .64
I know the Rover lads use both on the 2l @ the same boost & the GTir has more of a lazy feel till it comes on & then it really pulls to the redline.

Re: S14 or Gtir turbo ?

the garrett gt28rs would be my choice for a low lagg response turbo on a fwd f7p 5gtt or the gt2871r /gt2876r for more bhp but more lag at a guess!!
if your budget can stretchare the gtir and s14 rollerbearing ?

does anybody know if the billet /gtx compressor wheels are available for the gt28/30 series

I did want a GT28RS but at a touch under a grand it may be a bit much for the budget build F7P turbo...... & no the S14 & GTiR units are journal bearing, prob only means 4/500rpms later spool though..which I can live with as you can pick either units up from £150-£300

When on a tight budget it makes sense to get the s14 t28 for £150. If you are not happy in a few months time, after you've run your engine, sell it on, you'll not loose any money. I think you might be surprised at how responsive it will feel.

I'll give the S14 a crack, like you say it will sell on easy enough on here or other forums if I find it to small. Should still make 240 bhp on a bar boost.

a t25 sized will work on a c1j ,but ar ratio and size of the compressor /turbine and inducer/exducers on the unit would help assess its flow /lag etc

What sizes would i be looking for that would mean its a good useable unit any ideas ?

Thing is a friend just scrape an old 200sx and has a re-con turbo never been used for sale.
I am going to see him tomorrow so will have a look at housing sizes, just looking for a heads up, dont want to mess the guy about as it is cheap enough if it is as he says.

    cheers regards dave.

Decent people at c.r turbos offer good advice, had a couple of turbos off them and if you mention the word cash may do you a better deal.

what have you done to your engine,is it running an uprated cam , the reason i am asking is that without a decent cam , your not going to see the benefits of a larger turbo it will be lag city for street use anyway

without seeing it , compressor nothing bigger than 50mm
turbine no bigger than 45mm/50mm i suppose and that would be with a c1j running a hot cam
thats my thoughts anyway, and as only a few other people bothered to post here

When I spoke to Mark @ CR before Christmas, he said he can make me up a turbo equivalent spec but journal bearing for around £600.
I have dealt with CR for a while now & had 3 turbo's from them, plus I know a few people off Renault5gtturbo.com have used them, the only unit I know had trouble was Chris who I bought my car from, it was all sorted FOC & the turbo I ended up with on the car was faultless

and watching some yank car show review on u tube , said it was lighter/stronger and more tip area on the compressor wheel

I have a standard engine. this turbo has been re-cond and never been used, It is a t25 garrett and is cheap.

I currentley have no turbo just exhaust housing in situ and guts removed and plated up. oil feed returned to sump and water pipes joined.

I cant justify spending hunderds on a turbo at the moment, and besides everywhere i rang besides ktec want a turbo to work from ? i dont want exchange just a new turbo to spec i ask for

    as i said dave
if it where me the compressor no bigger than 50mm
turbine no bigger than 45mm, but that said if needs must buy it anyway, you can always stick in a 285 or the like afterwards to get the most out of the turbo, once funds allow

Re: S14 or Gtir turbo ?

Just had look at this T25 turbo from a s14 200sx and have some info.

The front compresser is ar 48 . opening 42mm

The exhaust housing says garrett 64 on it. I measured the size an it is 45 mm across the turbine, I compared it to an old housing i have.

The exhaust housing is slightly bigger in size, only slightly. Than an old cracked t25 ar 48 housing i have sat in shed with markings on it. the turbine being the same 45mm on old turbo?

This turbo all looks good except the exhaust housing will need turning or is it to big of a housing and needs to be changed ?

Thats .64 rear housing is too big for the C1J, the rear wheel is fairly big too but combine it with a .49 rear housing and it'll spin but abit quicker.

Cheers mark, any ideas on souring a housing, i have one but it has cracks round waste gate.

Is it easy enough to swap housings over then ?

No believe the housing will need machining to fit the rear wheel perfectly, although worth checking with turbo specialist on that.
I think last time i had .49 rear housing fitted to a S14 turbo i had to have it machined abit.

I have alittle higher than standard compression.

Got cosworth front mount intercooler to fit as well as fitting new oil cooler .

Going to fit new clutch and oil pump.

But for now any turbo that fits and spins will do. just would rather do a half decent job.

Advise off you guys i shouldnt go wrong cheers dave

drop a piper 285 in your engine , when you can afford it and that will help alot with that turbo should be good for bigger bhp

If its the same turbo that is fitted to the Rover 200 turbo, the T25 tomcat because of the 270 bearing they dont like much over 18psi apparently?

S14 has a T28, the older S133 have T25's, still bigger than the Rover unit though as they only have a .49 rear housing.

Cant really remember what my Tomcat T25 had on the backend, think it was a .49, really wish I'd kept that turbo now and rebuilt it as a spare... Would have been nice with a 360 bearing

21 psi sounds like fun matey im sure it can handle it what I dont want to do is set it up for 18 psi and then find out that it would be fine at 25psi

I think it's the fuel map on the B18ft ecu that will limit the psi you can run and not the turbo in this case. Best asking Markey mark or Haz what is the max the OE ecu can fuel for and keep a few psi below for a safety zone

Re: S14 or Gtir turbo ?

I thought you would be able to run what you wanted (within reason) as its all just a case of tricking the ecu with bypasses and adjusting the afm. So if its tricked correctly it should be fine. Shouldnt it?
