    starting issues - Resolved

    right,

just thought i'd ask on here before i put it away for the winter..

since i blew it up at the pod, its had strange starting issues.. ever since i've had it, its had no choke flap, and cold starting, even in snow has never been a problem.

when i fixed it from the pod i put a new carb top on (the actuall top part with the studs) as mine had been ruined from having bolts not studs, when i swapped it i also removed the fast idle cam as i didn't have a choke cable anyways..

    right, thats all thats changed...

now when cold, or left for a long time, the car starts instantly, then dies, and will turn over and turn over till the batt dies. its got good spark, and fuel as my pump is on a switch, and always give it a few secs to prime up.

to start it from cold, it needs a big big bump start, and it slowly wakes up, then its fine, starts religiously until i has time to cool right down.

why would it not start with the starter, but on a bump?!? even on cranking it has a really healthy spark, and all i've swapped is the carbtop, but i even kept my needle valve. its had a head gasket, water pump, rad etc. etc but wouldn't have thought that this would affect it, also my valve clearances are absolutely spot on?!?

if anyone has had anything similar, what was it, or failing that anyone have any suggestions?!?

    sorry for the essay!

    Re: starting issues

sounds like it may be flooding. Mine always starts first time then dies.... I give it a couple of seconds, give it 2 heathy pumps of throttle and of she goes.

    Re: starting issues

yah could be flooding. When it fires and then dies, take the plugs out and give them a clean. Lob em back in and try again. If it does the same then its sounding like overfueling. The bumping could be helping by dragging the fuel in more consistently than a slow turning battery/starter effort. Other thing to look at is a mismatched carb top/base combo. They are all warped and of differing material magnesium and alloy! Could be a leak between the two. Heat normally helps keep things running.

    All theories of course.

update, may be of use to people searching the boards in the future...

accelerator pump arm was seized, so no 'squirt' for startup, or anything for that matter!
