Engines need to work at an optimum temperature, thermostats keep them there, you can run too cool.

Are there any benefits for running without one Ian or do you just chose to not use one?

    Re: thermastat

If you need to run without a thermostat surely all its doing is masking the problem of the engine not running at the correct temperature...

Providing the water pump and radiator are doing their job there should be no need to run without one, besides all you end up with is a luke warm heater!!!

I always ran a standard stat and fan switch in my Ph1 and never had any issues...and I was warm in winter

I took mine out today and tested it in boiling water. It didn't open up so I won't be putting that back in till I get a new one.

    Re: thermastat

fit the stat . think of it this way if you put cold water on hot metal it shocks the metal
the stat controls the amount of temp the engine gets. having a stat in place slows down the cold water from the rad and you get less temp fluctuations . plus also with a stat in place your engine will be at its optimum temp and work better

don't forget that the oil temp is controlled by the water temp too. - too colder water will mean the oil temp is outside its effective working range.

    Re: thermastat

The opening point should be stamped on the stat. When you say it's running hot, how hot? Anywhere between the 2nd and 3rd line is where it should be (I'm counting the first line as being the one at 9 o'clock) Standard is all you need.....

    Re: thermastat

So the needle is heading into the 4 line/shaded area? If so that's too hot. Possibly a blocked radiator as you say......

    Re: thermastat

not to the shaded area but to the second notch which is three quarters.

James the rad is fooked definatley leaking, took it out and got a replacement of ian with a different fan set up to the spal one. Im going to take the other one back. The rad ian gave me was lying around an i didnt flush it before i put it on. I took it off earlier and flushed it gona put it back on tommorrow and see if its worked.
If not ill take mine back and get a replacement one but if i can sort this one i can get some money back.

Im practically a pro at taking rads aoutt now thanks to you for doing it the first time.

    Re: thermastat

didn't realise you'd had so many problems? i remember you having a leak but thought it was just the top hose connection that needed tightening.

I'd of been back down the place you bought it from the following day if it leaked!

    Re: thermastat

well it only recently started leaking its due to the spal fixings that go through the rad that have damaged it you cant see nothing visually but it was definatley leaking from where the pin went through the rad. Im going to take it back as soon as iv got this one sorted hopefully take it back by saturday.

I've been wondering this too?? can anyone clarify??

I'm assuming there is no need for low temp if your cooling system is working fine, and standard set-up and perhaps a low temp is used for cars with more 'tuned' engines running more boost etc etc..............

    Re: thermastat

std is ok but these little babies do run very warm so in my eyes the cooler you can keep things the better so Low Temp ones are a good idea but there not vital...

just a matter of your opinion really...
