    Benefits of EFI

Now we all know the list of benefits of EFi thrown around by tuners to get us to part with our hard earned, well I've decided to start a list of some of the benefits I've found by actually doing it.

    1. cold starts are easy, 1 turn and away you go
    2. warm starts are easy, 1 turn and away you go
    3. no more carb freeze
    4. off boost power is up and feels great
    5. this one I like alot at the mo, from full to the brim to the warning light coming on it did 320miles to one tank of fuel including a dozen blast at 14psi making BMW's look slow

I'll add more benefits as I go

    Re: Benefits of EFI

Just out of interest and if you dont mind disclosing, what would you say was the rough cost of the necessary bits to convert to efi? i know each fabrications is going to be different but a rough idea for those considering would be nice. Also those petrol savings would probably outway the costs soon lol.

    Re: Benefits of EFI

Well it all depends on how you want to build it

all new parts or scavange parts from a scrappy, I did a mix of both.

An emerald or adaptronic ecu are gunna be the most exspensive parts at around 500quid

the fuel injectors I got cost 75quid for a set of 4

fuel pressure reg cost anything from 35 upto 200+ quid

Its possible to reuse the factory fuel pump and lines but I wanted to change mine so I got an escort cossie fuel pump from a scrappy for 10quid and the Steel braided FIA race approved lines cost 100quid (exspensive I know but look much nicer aflow twice what the factory jobs could)

All the basic sensors cost around 90quid total

you'll need some form of crank position reference, you could get the flywheel machined but I just had a trigger wheel welded to the bottom pully, they cost around 20quid

I used a mitsuibishi starion throttle body from a scrappy costin 15quid

then comes the inlet manifold, they can be as cheap or as exspensive as you like depending on who makes it, average I've seen em cost around 400quid

The ignition coil shouldn't cost anymore then 45quid unless your keeping the dizzy

Your HT leads will replacing with supressed leads to reduce electronic noise, the spark plug will need to be changed to resisted plugs for the same reason

thats all I can think of right now

When you put it all down like that it sounds alot, can you get a complete kit with everything or do you buy it all how you have.

I don't know of anyone doing a multipoint efi kit for the R5 right now, MB perforance are doing a single pint kit but that wouldn't be much better than a carb.

It does sound alot but at the rate its saving me fuel It'll paid for itself in no time

    good thread this
im in the process of collecting parts for a conversion late in the year
and never considered the plugs n leads

if you dont mind me asking how do you control your idle
through a idle control valve or adjustment at the throttlebody?

what about mapping time on the rollers? thats got to be one of the expensive bits?

I was gunna use an idle control valve but the Emerald has abit of software that allows idle stabilisation through ignition timing, don't ask me the exactly details as I haven't had a chance to read up on it properly yet but it works

trust me to forget that lol

yeah mapping can cost quite abit, dunno what Scoff charges to map the adaptronic but I know Dave charges 270quid for a day no matter if it takes 1hour or 10 its the same price............. unless you pay with cash as he likes money in his pocket and not having to give some of it to the **** in no.10

Not really sure and I'd prefer not to work it out cus I'd proberbly cry but I know its less than what BBPT were charging for their efi connversion

If you have the tuning software for the ECU you are using and have a base map to start from (and a friend to do the driving), there's no reason why you can't have a crack a mapping yourself. Just make sure you go for a rich start and work your way down to optimum.

It's been around for a while and seems to work well enough but, the limiting factor will be the std intake manifold that it's bolted to complete with small intake opening. I don't know the exact ID dimensions but ultimately it's an EFI version of the std carb!

    thats what i was hopeing
as it saves alot of pain when making a manifold
    thanks for the reply

That and it doesn't even have a ignition coil pack instead of a dizzy, the one Dave said to me while mapping my 5 was that the C1J seems to be very sensitive to igniton timing changes and small changes yeilded big differences

    Re: Benefits of EFI

Too true Olly, mappable ignition is far more beneficial than EFI. I think some guys on here were talking about fitting Megajolt, which is the ignition only version of Megasquirt, for that very reason.

    Re: Benefits of EFI

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

To give an other idea, it cost me around 1000€ to swap carb by EFI.

This included the home made inlet manifold, all the EFI from R21 Turbo (ecu, sensors, wiring, etc.). It's compatible with the oe flywheel. So no trigger wheel or something else to add.

And after, it cost me around 500€ to buy Tech edge data logger, an eprom emulator, and others little stuffs.

If you are interested on the R21 Turbo EFI, have on look to this website :
