    gearbox problems again..again..again

after several rebuilds that i have paid for by good companies and hads a go myself i always have problems after 2-3 outings...and it seems to always be a second gear fault usually selector forks cracking or fingers snapping off...i wanna bury this problem now the only way i can see is if i fit steel selector forks...is this possible??? and getting them made?? up or does anyone know are they fitted in any of the later type boxes??? or this is an option??? what u reckon? cheers.

I've spoken to him, he'd know if there is anything useful available, although he probably only does the newer Sadev stuff now.

That Avanti box is very close ratio, I don't think you'd like it.

compared to the standard speeds in gears of 37.4/62/87/119/148 that Avani box with the same final drive gives you 39.6/54.1/68.4/84.8/99.4 and for all that I doubt it's much, if any, stronger.

that has the same ratios as the Avanti box, it's likely to be very similar. Note the sadev forks, maybe they will work with your box?

oops, that isn't like the Avanti, it's a dog box, and the avanti is synchro. I know Avanti do a dog box coz I spoke to them a few years back, from memory they did 3 different gear clusters.

Have you got a spare fork / old one? Or do you have a photo of one? Just wondering what they look like and if it would be possible to make one?

Im just thinking the same thing Ash

Jaf, when you strip yours out, give us a shout and ill take a look, we should be able to make a stronger one.
Will you be able to get hold of a new/undamaged one to get the dimensions from?

I think they're normally something like bronze so that they don't pick up on the gears, you may need to fit bronze pads in the steel forks. I'm sure you materials guys will have a better idea than me.

ive got a decommisioned robocop in the shed, we could use a bit of his armour

titanium is a bit extreme, or should that be expensive. Loads of different steels available now that can be used with other steels in contact.

I do need to know what grade the gears are thou,
    Are they cast or forged?
    Andy?

if you're serious about making forks I could ask one of the gearbox designers at work about materials, unfortunately I just chucked out all my old gears and forks, so wouldn't have anything to show him.

I'd guess that gears are made from "good ****"...

never mention titanium to someone who sells it, you'll spend hours being made to look stupid about materials and come out of it none the wiser. Always use a middleman when talking about Ti

titanium picks up too easily (spalls), and is quite brittle. a good steel should be more than a match.

there endeth 3 years of materials science at uni.
