    Anyone own/owned a 182 Trophy?

And if so, your opinion on them please.

Opinion in what respect? They are fantastic little cars that are although they are a Clio 182, are a noticable step on from the 1*2 Cup versions in terms of handling.

    Opinion in general.

I don't mean a comparison view to the gtt, as that would be like comparing chalk & cheese, but just a general overview of what they're like to drive on a daily basis, fuel economy, creature comforts, parts prices, fair price to pay for a good'un, etc etc.

I was actually quite surprised at how similar they felt with the T being the slighty fatter sibling

    Re: Anyone own/owned a 182 Trophy?

Not a Trophy, but I owned a 182 FF (with the Trophy Recaros my favourite part of the car!)

Must say, although the handling was simply amazing, it wasn't the best car for me. There's no power low down and it seems to take an age to get the revs up, tbh I hardly ever got to feel acceleration as by the time it was kicking in (4,250rpm or something I seem to remember) it was always the end of the road...

Also... belts and new CAT came in at just under a grand, on a three year old car! Had starting problems sometimes, I needed to get the lamda sensor changed, and the CAT to manifold ring was worn, luckily K-Tec done quite cheap versions of these. I used to work for Renault whilst I owned my car, so I got all the best advice etc. but unfortunately, definitely a car which didn't live up to my expectations.

    Re: Anyone own/owned a 182 Trophy?

The old dear 182 with cup packs is great 34k, 5 years old and prettymuch problem free. Just had the belts done costing £470 but that's it. Michelin tyres managed 26k and if I had done a front to back easily 35+ thousand could be done.

I expect the extra Tweeks make a difference but there all cracking cars, I expect alot of gtt owners will end up there next.

    Re: Anyone own/owned a 182 Trophy?

Kayzee With all due respect a 182FF is not a Trophy. They are coming to an age where I would advise anyone buying one to check that both the aux/cam belt service has been done and the Sachs dampers on the front to have been refurbed. It'a 2lt car so petrol consumption can be high with a heavy foot but 30mpg is easily achievable. not a great car for long motorway miles but it was never designed for that really.
I don't know what your expectations were but EVO mag put the T up against an M5 and it wasn't totally embarrassed.

    Re: Anyone own/owned a 182 Trophy?

I'll do the belts/any work myself, so not worried in that respect.

Agreed, the 182 FF is heavier, hence why I'm interested/asking about the Trophy.

    Re: Anyone own/owned a 182 Trophy?

surely the FF with packs will be a better daily drive (assuming thats what your after) and still good for weekend kicks around the circuit.

i'd never get a cup because for what it weighs i'd rather have climate control, zenons, matchin rear seats etc

what about a full fat, and just get the remote resovoir shocks from the trophy, best of both worlds then

    Re: Anyone own/owned a 182 Trophy?

1 thing for sure is they seem to hold their value a bit better than a FF 182 according to the 1's that sell on piston heads anyway , im getting a bit sick of the ride in the trophy tbh suspension is just to firm for day to day driving even going over fag douts makes it feel like youve hit a hole, also it follows the camber of the roads and the turning circle is pretty crap, it seems to bounce a bout a bit much on motorway drives although my 172 cup felt similar , lacks a bit low down power but not bad once up the revs , averages about 30mpg , ive had mine from new and done 25k miles mostly driven by my mrs its full service history and the only thing ive had to replace is 2 front tyres and the discs and pads all round , ive took it to a cpl of track days where it comes into its own , it handles like nothing else ive driven , and is so much fun on track .

Ill be putting mine up for sale soon but due to mileage and cond ill be looking for strong money , pretty individual car up here anyway as ive only ever seen another 1 once in the 5 years ive had mine in my area central scotland .

No, but in the scheme of things, there is very little difference. I've been on Cliosport.net for years and when new people come on to the forums they always get recommended a 182 FF as the best overall package including price.

If you read my post there is nothing I have specified that wouldn't affect a Trophy as well.

    Re: Anyone own/owned a 182 Trophy?

I've had mine since new in sep 2005. It's the only car that I've kept longer than 1.5 years so obviously I quite like it.

It really comes down to what you value in a car. If your looking for a rare but capable hot hatch then your looking in the right direction. A full fat 182 is a nice car but there that common there's just nothing special about them. Almost everyone I know who has a clio 182 has admitted that they'd love a trophy as it represents the ultimate in 182 series. I also see them as the last hardcore/raw hot hatch before everything got bigger and safer.

Everything is a compromise though so yes the suspension is a little stiff but no more than a normall clio, I'm sure when the suspension was investigated it actually runs softer springs with the damper having larger diameter piston/rod and giving greater plusher control. So chassis wise it's pretty much perfect.

It is however made by renault though so does have it's share of rattles etc... but nothing to excessive.

The engine is nothing special, if your going to one after owning torquey turbo cars then you will be frustrated at the lack of low down grunt and the need to "wring it's neck" to make quick progres.

All in they come highly recomended but like anything your best off trying a few to get a better idea if it's something your after, belt's wise there easy to do just awkward and time consuming. Mine's lightly modified in the engine department and is currently having some work done to it otherwise you'd of been more than welcome to have a look around it.

    Re: Anyone own/owned a 182 Trophy?

i owned one for about a year and it was brilliant!it was standard apart from a complete exhaust system and a re-map.good as an everyday car with a fair amount of poke.plus the misses loved it!(which is rare coz he hates all my cars)!
the only thing is i didnt find the seats that comfortable.the longer the journey the more i disliked them!that and the roads where i live are terrible so was a bumpy ride but cant really blame the car for that.

    Re: Anyone own/owned a 182 Trophy?

The wife has a FF182, its a nice car, fairly cheap to run, averages around 35mpg day to day use... things I've noticed when bombing around in it are: Brakes are poor and deffo lacks grunt but it handles well and is comfortable to drive long distances!

Thanks for all the comments chaps; has made for good reading.

I was expecting to read pro-positive responses galore that Trophy's are the don etc, yet some comments from owners suggest otherwise. Good feedback.

Anyone know the weight of the Trophy, and the 172/182 Cup & FF variants?

Other than the flashy dampers, whats the 182T got going for it?

The 172/182 is one of the best handling fwd'ers EVER made.

I think you'd enjoy driving it personally, good chuckability, sensible grunt and easy enough to maintain and upgrade

    You chopping the 5?

recaro seats, climate control, red paint + v6 spoiler and a slightly different offset on the wheels other than that it's a unique number out off 500

Basically its a clio cup but with the extras and fancy seats

Mart just build a 172 project car - thinner glass of the cup with all the extras, cup also has same offset wheels and then get some recaro interior and the fancy dampers - job done and even more rare as not red

Mart just sold the omega and got my new runabout / car

    Wait for it.......................Skoda

    Octavia 4x4

    estate

    1.8 20v turbo

Those in the know will confirm its based on the mk4 R32 platform and the k03s engine is the detuned 180spec one and all the R32 nice bits fit straight on

Have to say at 150bhp its a bit pony but hope to get time to do the full DG service in coming weeks and will chuck a map on it for now (210bhp) ready for winter

Even have full electrics and climate etc

Need the haldex controller upgrade to get the most from it but can confirm in the wet the 4wd works just fine

So after winter will throw the R32 fatter ARB and suspension etc and look out fo rthe fancy R32 seats and K04 turbo and just just at upto 300bhp and tow the track beast around

    DG

Mart you and your change of car option its becoming legend!!!!

Would you not considered cooper s as a track car, 200hp is achievable with a few bits, a bit of weight saving here and there and the chassis are unbelievable to, honest

    Re: Anyone own/owned a 182 Trophy?

my advice is go buy a integra type r instead

having owned my trophy at the same time as a friend of mine who has the 182 with all the gadgets, i actually preferred my friends clio to drive

i then looked into trading the trophy in for a civic type r(01-05 shape) and found it a bit dull compared to the clio

then i went on a test drive in a integra type r, and thought i had to have this!

Eug', I think my 'geeza' nature will outweigh any femininity issues

    Tom, comment noted

Phil, way too much femininity going on there. My aforementioned 'nature' only goes so far! Sorry mate, only joking Old skool Mini's are cool as feck. Period. Since BMW got involved, they've never floated my boat.

Mr Alldaway, the type R's are corking motors, nothing wrong with them or Jap' cars in general. Just RenaultSport motors are in my blood.

Duncan, don't forget Blyton end of October, or Oulton start of November.
