C - Reg Phase II HOW????

Ok, silly question time. From memory the Phase I was released on a C and D reg, The Phase II was released on E – J with the old K reg. How is it possible to get a C reg Phase II, it isn’t on Irish plates or on a private plate?
Many thanks for any help that can be offered.

It isn't? Is it one you've seen? Are you sure it hasn't just had a phase 2 kit put on at some time?

It has Phase II Shocks, Decals, Cooling system, Complete Interior, Centre Console, Body kit, The tag on the bulk head is the Phase I type not Phase II. One Elderly owner from new. It has not been resprayed. I spent hours looking for any tell tell signs that it has been changed from a Phase I to a Phase II. I am going to go back and have another look today.

    Eh?

Phase one it's in the engine bay area, above the turbo, phase two, it's in the bulhead area.

Re: C - Reg Phase II HOW????

Most E reg cars were 'phase 1.5' so had a mish-mash of ph1 and ph2 bits.

If it looks like a phase 2 car and has a C-reg plate its simply one of two things...

    1) A private plate of some description

    2) A phase one thats been converted

Re: C - Reg Phase II HOW????

In my first post I did write it is not on an Irish plate or a Private plate. The AEI is a 209 in the black box behing the bulkhead. It must have been converted, but what other things can I look for apart from the bits I have listed. The tax discs have the C reg on it all the way back.
    Thanks

Conversion is the only logical answer.

I'd imagine a ph2 version of the gtt was still only on the Renault drawing boards back in '85.

This confirms it is a Phase I and that reg is correct. I will get some photos when I go and have another look later.

Re: C - Reg Phase II HOW????

There you go then mate, its a look a like phase II. Dont wish to be negative but why would someone go to all that trouble and expense unless, maybe, the car had been in a shunt???? Cynical, but not unrealistic. Have you been all over the underside yet? What are the panel gaps like?

I take it the one elderly owner isnt selling the car then? Would have been interesting to hear what they had to say about its history?

I will be meeting the elderly owner this evening as it was one of his sons last night, but it all looked straight enough from underneath. When you open the door it is like time has stood still although it is Phase II interior it is spotless. 40K on the clock and I will look at the service tonight. Someone has spent alot of money and time making this into a Phase II. The engine bay is very clean.

Re: C - Reg Phase II HOW????

    chassis number should start VF1C405

the oval plate should be near the brake master cylinder.....

country code number should be 600 if its phase although it could have 720 ......

not much more I can tell you without chassis, oval plate and reg numbers

The chassis number does start VF1C405

But the country code number is 500 unless I have read it wrong.

Re: C - Reg Phase II HOW????

Got the full story last night, yes it is a Phase I, the chap that owned it was an ex service manager at Renault dealership. It was converted at work. So everything was done even the fuel filter setup etc. Not the best pictures but will give you an Idea, as it was cold and wet out this morning. Low mileage 40K. I am going do the head gasket this weekend, so will give me a chance to look inside and see!!

Still got phase 1 mirrors and vinyl door cards by the looks of it.

Still, nice little project to keep you busy.

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

There are other tell tale signs to see if its a phase 1, most of the plastic interiour parts have date codes on them. The fuels tanks also have date codes that you should be able to see if you look through the o/s rear wheel arch, if its an original C plate i'd expect them to be 85. Also the chassis number should be stamped as "whole" numbers & letters, not made up by dots. There are other minor differences that the trained eye can find. Worth a look.
