clutch pics?, oil leaks

Took the engine out my 5 yesterday because of a slipping clutch (replaced 1000miles ago valeo volvo clutch) it was fine until boost was uppd to 17psi, now slips when giving it the beans.

Heres the inside of the gearbox


Heres the clutch, it doest seem covered in oil, when you touch it fingers clean still, does it only take a small amount of contamination for it to slip?




Is there anything to check on the flywheel while im here?
The engine doesnt loose oil, not enough to notice on the dipstick, but it has got a few(many) places that id like to sort out. It looks like the filler cap leaks, and also the rocker cover bolts, have tried new small gaskets+paste.
Also from the bottom of the sump upto the turbo these look suspect covered in oil, are these original as they dont look right?




And loads of oil below the spark plugs?


Was thinking last week get a clutch in it and hit the pod this weekend, but im going to skip that and try and get this all sorted while its out. And got a timing chain and tensioner to fit as it sounds noisey, hmm loads of work

that clutch looks soaked in oil.

Pull the flywheel off and check the crank seal.

check the oil cooler hoses for leaks, they can spray in the top where the tdc is and contaminate it

make sure the oil in the clutch housing does'nt smell of gearbox oil...if it does u have a g/b prob!

It only takes a pin hole leaking for high pressure oil to find its way onto ya clutch.

Get the flywheel off and get a machine shop to skim the face to give a nice clean surface.

While the flywheel is off replace the crank oil seal, it may look ok but better to be safe than sorry, give it a nice smear of sump seal around the the outside edge once its in place to be double safe.

Get a new clutch, the volvo should be ok for your level of tune, that one is just scrap now.

Make sure to clean out your gearbox properly but check before you do to see if its engine oil or gear oil thats siting inside the box, a quick will tell you the difference, engine oil doesn't really smell but gear oil smells like robocop ****ed flipper

i did as andrew said and took off the flywheel, the ring seal behind it is deffinatley leaking (wheres best for one of these?) and how do you replace it?

Clutch has deffinatley not been ridden, but was heavily under big boost.

It was engine oil, didnt smell like gb oil. Have given the gearbox a degrease.

While its out im going to do the timing chain, have read up 2 ways of doing this, 1 without removing the sump, 1 with.

Is geting the flywheel skimmed essential, or can i just clean it up with some brake cleaner

not essential...i've used an orbital sander on one before now to get rid of the rust etc on it. - also leaves the surface of the metal with a slightly 'distressed' look, which i like to think adds to the friction on the clutch plate.

Another thing that may have caused the problem is the turbo oil return, the turbo i got sent by ctr had a slightly smaller oil bit on it, i was told just to clamp the hose down.

I have a similar problem but have no signs of slipping clutch - yet!

It looks like I have a leak on the Turbo Oil feed and it is dripping down on the top of the gearbox and getting onto the flywheel. I am going to try and sort the leak on Friday but does this mean any oil left on the flywheel will go away without problems or should I expect issues from it or the clutch?

Buy a genuine oil seal, they aren't cheap, but I'm not the only person to have a cheap seal leak, and it's a real pisser having to pull the engine out again.

To remove the old seal I carefully drilled 3 small holes in the existing seal, screwed in self tapping screws, and used these to pull the old seal out.

Ok, trip to renault it is then. By anychance anyone got a part number for this seal?

And when iv got the old one out, a wipe where it was? bit of thixo paste and just push in the seal, correct?

what ever happened to using a large screwdriver down the lip and lever the fooker out?

You could maybe measure the O.D of the T25 oil return and buy a 90 degree, lined reducing bend, i think SFS do them on their site ?

My local renault (wests cambridge) want £24 for the seal

Iv took the old one out, if the sump was leaking on that side, would that get into the gearbox and onto the clutch? Just working out weather i should just drop the sump aswell and reseal that

Could've been, to be honest its best not to cut corners, if you've got the timing cover off and the gearbox out the way, take advantage and do the job proper

Yer. that would be good mark, would we be doing it by dropping the sump? is there any gaskets/sealent il need to get for this?

My car did this, hose solutions do some lovely braided cooler hoses which you can route away from the bell housing.

Big thanks to mark he came round tuesday night with a bottom end gasket set, and we replaced the timing chain and tensioner, dropped the sump and fitted a cork gasket and a new crankshaft oil seal, so hopefully this will have done it. Top man as he came round after work, and didnt leave untill 12, turns out we both know a few of the same people, small world.

Hopefully the clutch will arrive tomorrow and i can start puting it all back together

You where right about the clutch though mark, gsf rang me today saying they have no valeo's? So it wont be done for the weekend. Il get you that number and let you know when she's running again

yeah i worked there for 2 years... know most of the locals (well i did about 5 years ago)

didn't think they have valeos, was worth a try though. if you'r about at the weekend, prob sat nite is busiest gimme a holla!
