My car - Renault 5 GT Turbo, 104k on the clock, 10 previous owners, Year 1990, reg - H154 TGO.
Purchase date. - Nov 2012.
Code name. - PANJ, The Widow Maker.
My story and a bit about the car it's self so far.
My search for a decent 5 seem to be ever lasting at over two years as each time I either just missed out or ended up getting messed around. There has been a few pop up but not really right for what I've got in mind for my build. This will all make more sense as this thread gets updated, as basically in a nut shell, this is not a o.e. restoration build as such nor being built just todo quarter mile or track days.
This car popped up on eBay as spares or repair and wasn't to far from me, so I was straight on the phone to go and have a look, and was met with a nice like minded R5 lover called Tom!
Turns out he is a member on here hence my thread title, "RTOC slag" with previous two owners being members here.
Members profile -

And after more digging around he got the car from JRP, members profile -

JRP - If your reading this and there is any other previous history you know about this car, then please feel free to add to it.
Back on topic,
Car been sitting in a lock up for 4 or 5 years and needs work, but is in fair condition after a swift look over, non sun roof, non running, missing a lot of parts etc which is no biggy as I'm mainly looking for a decent shell, asked how much he wanted and the deal was done and there we have it, I've finally got a decent base to start on. It even come with two sets of keys, original owners book, folder, all old MOT's, invoices etc.
Now, this is my sixth Renault 5 GT Turbo, the last one being a full strip and build back in 2004/05, but everything died with the old site when that went down and lost all the pictures after my pc went bust to.
The main plan on this build is my usual outlook approach of all or nothing, ideally for those who know me will know this should end up being pretty special.
So, keep tuned, and feel free to comment! Thanks for reading and hope you all enjoy my build thread.
Here it is when I first saw it. :)

It's so rotten I might as well thrown in the trowel now!
That was a good car to me, looked beautiful when I had it.
And engine was re built by the master just before I got it.
It was a real looker I thought and, at that time solid, it seems to have gone slightly down hill.
Glad to see it being rebuilt. Does it still have a small laqure peel on the drivers side above rear window?
I'd love to come see it :)
I'll try dig old photos out and post them. I sold that as I was running a V6 Clio as well and rebuilding another.

Take the front of the sill behind the arch to the metal, mine looked mint but was full off holes.. That's where all the water and mud sits so high risk, I didn't wanna be finding any after I got it painted, as most paint shops will happily paint over rot to get paid..
The rest looks good so all those missed deals were a stroke of luck..
New rear bumper brackets from ashy and she's a beaut :)
Was this owned by Tom before you? I almost bought this if it is. :D

Yes, funny enough it does! Tom did say he took it to the Nurburgring and did a couple laps and made it back. From reading his posts, it popped the head gasket and he got it fixed, but can't of been done right as popped again then sat ever since. He must of sold parts off it when he was buying in 5's and breaking them for parts on ebay etc which would explain the random missing parts. :(
Well, I've set a date for MOT, I'm looking to have this fully stripped, re sealed under side, brakes, brake lines, fuel lines, suspension, bushes etc, fresh jacking points, fully re wielded up with new engine in and running by end of June! And yes, this year June.
Il worry about the main body work later down the line depend on how fast thing moving along. I don't want to get to ahead of myself, but I may even get the full body completely by Nat day or end of summer if parts keep coming in and reaching me on time that is. If not, I don't want it sitting in the lock up for the winter with it all being freshly done. :)
Sorry Just looked the pics m,ust be on my parents computer. They were on the site before it went down all those years ago, all i could find was nice shots of my current 5 lol
off topic but hey ho

Don't worry Dave, I don't cut corners and I will be doing as much wielding myself, along with pretty much all and everything on this car build will be done by me with my own hands where possible apart from final paint as I think that's best left to the pros.
If it helps you sleep better tonight, I will be going full bare mental on it, hope this helps keep your sleeping pills in the bathroom draw........ :cooter:
All that said, when pulling the wing out, enough mud fell out I could fill a plant pot plus two random racket spanners and one normal double end spanner popped out, I forgot to photo the rest, will get more pics when I finish taking the engine and box out.

Sorry Just looked the pics m,ust be on my parents computer. They were on the site before it went down all those years ago, all i could find was nice shots of my current 5 lol
off topic but hey ho
Jrps I may have some pic's of it as i worked on it often enough:laugh:
Then I decided I needed some bucket seats and went for Sparco Rev's, think they weight around 5kg each, will have to check that tho, but their very light.
http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg509/Goobie_Ali/RTOC%20Stuff/ca4f9de98a5b08cf5810978536108ff0.jpg
After that, I needed brackets to mount them so brought these 6mm thick alloy jobbies.

Then there they sat for a while and I decided I needed to make more use of them when my little brother came over to stay, ten minutes later they made very comfy seats for sitting in while playing the playstation.

I'll sleep like a baby knowing your back in the club.. I've been all over my car sorting rot out as no one else can be trusted to do it..
Mines going electric blue in the next month hopefully... :smokin:
Couple of pic's when Tom owned it and convoy to Mallory park 2007.
I have more just on another pc:laugh:
My trade mark airfiler set up I use to sell :D
That's going back some years :D
How much does that filter cost to make up?
I had to pay full price for it :( I brought it in two parts as you may of guessed, trumpet from forge for £45 I think? Then the filter was around £90? Universal green cotton jobbie, its pretty big. Then polished it by hand to give it a smooth surface to aid air flow and added bling.
You could buy one for a lot less, but I particularly wanted that one. If you go on eBay, tap in Cossie air filter, and you should find similar with a fake K&N filter on the end, cheaper option plus could swap the filter over at a later date if you wanna fussy like me. :D

Yeah, that's the one, I think it was featured few years ago to, it changed a lot as it past hands. I remember pm-ing him about the car and at one point he was thinking of selling. Is that the same one he got now that just been feat then? Reg H335 HRK.

Got some tasty updates coming mid/end of next week! One of which I'm sure going to be the next must have mod! :D

I assumed it was the same. I think in the mag the plate looks a bit like Alex so probably a private jobbie.
Think I might have some stolen Internet pictures of when you owned it on a hard drive somewhere.
Good effort! Good to see someone making a car for performance as appose to back to standard. Those seats are tasty aswell. Keep an eye on this rascal ;)

:D
Goobie uses £50 notes as toilet paper..
Next up while I was gathering interior parts was some plan and simple harness. Maybe a bit to plan, so knowing me these will properly end up being changed at some point.
http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg509/Goobie_Ali/RTOC%20Stuff/ef4d2debf99c742f3be07613a9da96e7.jpg
Also, whilst I was at it, I kept changing my mine on how the inside was going to look and colour theme.
The stripped out look has been done to death, I do like the look, but I want to be able to use and drive this car when ever I feel like it, but at the same time I don't want it loaded with unnecessary trim etc and feel like I'm driving around in a hollow car with everything rattling about, but I think I've come up with a all rounder solution, more to follow on this as build thread comes along.
Next,
I always wanted black carpet as that just looks smart and gives it more of a modern car look and feel, but this was always a 50 50 choice mainly because the red carpet in my 5 is actually pretty mint and I've not even wet vac it etc yet. :D But then I saw a decent raider carpet pop up and me being me I couldn't help my self and brought it. Plus, once added with everything I've got in mind for the interior, it should work very well, i.e. my polish bucket seat brackets should stand out nicely against the black! :D
Also, this got me more into thinking and planning what I'm going todo with my standard dash and I've come up with a few cleverly mix ideas on trim finishes etc that I've not seen done in the combo I've got in my mind which saying that, is newish technology for one part im planning which is going to be a pain todo but will completely transform the overall look but if I get it right, it will really be a main focus point.
This choice could end up being abit like marmite, but that's all I'm saying for the minute and your have to wait and see what I come up with, but this is my build and I'm building it to how I feel my 5 should look and fit in with more modern overall appearance. :cooter:
Anyway, here my carpet!
http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg509/Goobie_Ali/RTOC%20Stuff/5c2298fdccffbf9cefd07206366dcc0c.jpg
Alloy wheel choice was a no brainier, I knew from the start what my wheel choice was going to be, genuine Clio Williams, fairly light to. :)
Took me a while to find a set, these popped up on eBay collection only and all the way in Bristol to. :scared: Made a deal and away I went on my 3 and a half journey one way! And on the way back started snowing and really badly to which then turned my trip into a all day and night one, the mrs was well happy.
After that, week later, a set come up 15 miles away! And now after just looking, there is three sets on eBay and one set on here for sale, how annoying. Plus, the ebays adds each seller put "very rare" yeah, three sets currently active right now, that's got to be rare.
Anyway, here are my wheels when I got them, top condition hey.
http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg509/Goobie_Ali/RTOC%20Stuff/03c1c6d3e5a5ee31678e4e44005f764a.jpg
a clean up and a some black paint, will look awsome:cool::p
deffo the rim of choice for a track animal;)
Now, after purchasing my amazingly mint "rare" alloys, refurb time was calling me.
I got a place that reasonable distances that I use for all my cars and do me fairly decent price, so off they went to be checked for cracks, buckles etc and much to my surprise, they run straight! Even with the tires on now they been done, they only have one or two 5g and a 10g weight on them, so very happy after the trouble they turned into.
Moving on, colour choice, I knew in my head what I wanted and took me about 15 minute going through colour chart after chart and finally decided on this one. :)
http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg509/Goobie_Ali/RTOC%20Stuff/dde91744a719020bfdaa5d6cf11cbd13.jpg
And that was it, left the wheels with them and waited for the call to tell me when there ready to come see if I was happy with them.
The phone call came, wheels are ready, come and have a look and off I went hoping my choice was going to prove me right.
And here how they looked when I got there.

Tires, I really wanted the toyo R888 but the suspension set up I'm going to be running with ride heigh would of limited me some what, and since this car build is to be all rounder and in general a expensive toy for me to tinker with blar blar I opted for the Continental Sportcontact 2, I did want the contact 3 but they don't do them in this small size :ashamed: running 195 45 15. I ended up picking these because found them to be great on my M3 and that's not a light car or under powered, plus also running these on the vxr to, so was a easy choice. :D
And here's how they currently look to date ready and waiting for a mint R5 or Clio to be bolted to.

Thanks, they turned out great, you wouldn't of thort they where the same alloys. :D
Ended up costing me a lot more than I hoped, but personally I think wheels can really make or break the overall look of a car. Money well spent now looking at the end result. Thanks for the positive comment. :agree:
Those wheels look great :agree: am quite jealous....will you take £50 for them? ;)
Stunning wheels.....but then again i am biased ;)

Finally into page two and well, lots going on right now with this build. :smokin:
Made big progress today loads of updates coming this week. :D
Was so busy didn't really get any pictures, plus gotten to dark by the time I called it a day and I'm not one for posting up poor pictures.
So, for the minute, we'll stick with a couple of shots of engine bay progress, finally empty bar a few bits still mainly due to needing the dash out the way which I managed to get done today AND full interior strip to, and again, no nasty rust or rot surprises! :D
So close to welding stage now. :smokin: And then the build can really start.
Waiting on a few people for parts to come in and hopefully I may even get my dash dismantled and sent off this week.

Just waiting on the front jacking points now then fingers crossed welding can start next week. :D

And here we have it, the next must have mod! :smokin:
Power steering in a R5! :D Got my Clio 1.8 16v / Williams rack and fresh track rod ends, which will be powered by my saxo/106 electric power steering pump.
Just need to get a 50 amp relay and make up a loom for it which is simple enough. Possibly link the switch feed for the relay with the fuel pump relay so only active when the engine is running. I could put in a separate switch instead, but that will just add risk of forgetting to switch it on/off every time the car is used or operated by third party's.
Just need to get a pair of brackets to bolt the rack to the sub frame which I'm waiting to hear back about then its a simple case of making a couple hydronic lines to and from the pump and rack then jobs a gooden.
More about this once I'm at the piecing it all back to together stage which isn't far off now.

Do the brackets from a mk 2 Clio fit? If so I have some sat around in me garage if they'll help. Also have RSI power steering pump and Volvo type if u get stuck ;-)
Right, been tinkering round today and got some fresh decent pictures of what I've been upto, so here goes. :)
First up, whilst I was at dash removal stage, I started stripping it down and was told there a immobiliser fitted. After closer look etc I see there a alarm as well and a whole array of random switches hidden in glove box and other areas under the dash :scared: two of them with nothing connected other side or just wires that goes to nothing? The more I took out, or cut out shall I say, the more bodge wiring I found. This alarm install must of been wired in by a blind person. I'm no expert, but if you saw/found what I did, it was a fire hazard waiting to happen. :(
Here some picture. :D
http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg509/Goobie_Ali/RTOC%20Stuff/1a2cad3723786624ec2e1ea1413f9163.jpg

Then, after that drama  onto removing the dash and the rest of the trim etc.......
Out come the dash. :D

All pretty clean, pulled off more sound deadening, but forgot to get some snaps. :scared:
Anyway, rust wise, only surface rust a little on the rear windows as seen in pictures below, the left side looks a little worse but that mainly due to shadow and me not removing the window glass just to take a picture.
Anyway, here the rear windows. :)

So, pretty much running out of things to remove now. I'm basically at the stage of waiting on other people for parts, main one being front jacking points that to be honest, don't really need changing, but if ya going to do a build, why cut corners? Do it once and do it right.
Ps, More goodys coming next week, so hurry up mr postman! :coffee:
I'll be back up the old brands hatch workshop tomorrow to clear out the last R5 gtt and clio 16v bits for scrap, I'll let you know if I find the rack brackets ASAP.

I'm all good on the pump buddy, but if the rack looks the same as mine pictured above then that's a result if Matt not got them. :smokin:
So if ok, could you have a look and let us know just incase. :D

Well, I was hoping to have a load of updates for you guys, but not much has happen, this is still down to waiting on parts, main one being jacking points!
Been three weeks of promises on waiting for these to turn up then I can book the work shop for welding and get my mate to spray the engine bay and inside shell while its there. So really, even tho I'm waiting on other things, this is causing me the biggest hold up currently.
So my plan for having this ready and passing its first mot in 3 years for end of June is looking slim, and thats even with my big cash budget and free time ive cleared for working on it. All this said, I'm still pushing for this mot date, so if no jack points this weekend, I'm buying twice as I'm not one for wasting time for the sake of £100.
Rant over, my plan for my dash has gone turbo..... I've fully stripped it down and from having a good look at how its joined together, I don't think once I've broken the plastic welds it will be as solid or back together good enough to my standards, so a rethink into what I'm going todo with that now which is anyoing some what, but with my will not be beaten attuide, I think I've come up with reasonable solution.
Anyway, no post or update is complete without a couple of snaps, so here my dash fully stripped down and as it was out it only made sense to buy a fresh heater matrix to.

Thanks for the offer, only reason I've waited as long as I have so far mainly due to me getting trade discount and no vat charge ;) Now hardly seem worth the trouble for the sake of £35

Sorry, completely missed your post. :scared: It is a little bit top secret, I've got two engines, one works ok but just needs tweaking and a few different better parts bolted on which will most likely be going in very soon as I want to be driving this car around this summer or at least I keep telling myself that and the other one is blown and in bits.
Mean while since my last post, the post man has been again, once I've unwrapped everything and got the camera out, il upload some more pictures.
Arh, and so my smile has return! :D
Right, here goes, my box has popped up from Bob at CGB, so time for some more picture whoring!
Been slowly collecting exterior parts for my car, started with renewing my whole light set up, couple of which I got a while ago the rest today, anyway these are all the little touches that get over looked and complete the overall look etc after full repaint and it would just be wrong not to get new ones. :D

Been focusing on suspension set up last week, I've got gaz Coilovers and their in need of a refurb as don't look to pretty, I can't comment on function as my car doesn't run. Sent a couple emails about getting them refurb but no reply as yet, what I really want to know is do they re zinc plate them? If they don't, then I think its a case of buying a new set or going with something else, undecided.
Moving on, brought new wishbones and ball joints and full set of polly bushes. Once I've got the subframe off, I will get it sand blasted and re powder coated along with my new wishbones to. :D Maybe even redone in a different colour for that "uprated" look.

All currently showing on my screen. :)
And strangely for me too now. :crap:
Had a bit of a crazy moment yesterday and went a little wild on the spending.
I've order three expensive toys, one of which turned up today! :D The rest as usual are made to order as these cars are old and rare. :( So il add that to my back log list of parts I'm still waiting on......
Anyway, this is what turned up today from Race Technology, Dash 4 Pro! :smokin:
Here a short vid clip of it working. - http://youtu.be/CV2FkVTybS4
And more detail video about what it can do here if anyone interested. - http://youtu.be/4sOJvcI8rIs
Pretty slick and abit over the top yes. :cooter:
And here it is! :D
It will be mounted to my steering wheel as came with a bracket for that and has quick release connecter plug which will work a treat with my Sparco snap off hub when removing my steering wheel after ive parked in the garage etc.

My Dash Pro is pretty slick, it maybe even my favourite single item on this build so far! :agree:
Anyway, more of last weeks spending madness has just popped up! :smokin:
Was told 3-4 weeks wait on my Coilovers, so bit of a result when they turned up earlier. :D Wasn't expecting these for at lest another two weeks.

I have been pushing to have this MOT by end of this month! It's looking very slim, but this is due to me not realising that most things I'm ordering etc are made to order, so this has held things up some what!
I "should" have massive update today, but the call hasn't come yet. :scared: So I'm pretty sure this is my next hold back, but I can afford to sit on that another seven days then some one in for a ear full.
Failing the above, I can't see why it won't be running by end of July. :)

Honestly, every time you post up new parts pictures, I start drooling! Its usually at my desk at work :dearme:
 Thanks mate, nothing beats brand new fresh parts.
Think I'm going to miss them all once their finally fitted to my shell, as wont be able to walk in the spare room and admire all my shiny new goodies.
My build cost so far as of last Fridays count minus things like postage etc has counted upto whooping £8,171.19p.
And thats with trade discount on a lot of parts and a fair few bargains on other odd bits and bobs.
I've actually got a lot of other parts that haven't yet been posted up on this thread, but will be the further I get with the build when revalent which then will explain how I've manage to spend to much.
After a quick short list check, I think im looking at another £1,500 - £2,000 max to get it to the stage I want to then go for its first MOT since last one in 2009 I think?

My builds around the 8k mark before paint which was quoted at 3.5k... Much Of my stuff isnt new but bad a55 stuff, new would break the bank for me... I'm dragging my feet now tho as I picked up a porsche:crap:
That's really put things on hold...
I think your doing he right thing, sometimes you have to smash out new new new or your end result won't live up to your dream..
It's not a dream build, I've made that mistake in the pass. :ashamed: I mainly say this because as I've found out the hard way, some times the dream is a dream for a reason and best left that way. :(
I'd like to call it more of a "vision" of how I would like my 5 to be and I'm building it to that image I got. :smokin:
Like you said, some times new parts is the only way to get it right and when we're talking the figures that are getting put into this build, it would just be wrong not to replace with new or better equipment where possible. :agree:
As I was trying to explain to some one the other day, I love these cars, but I'm kinda of restoring but making it brand new and modern at the time, ie power steering, more capable engine etc but still retain the standard retro/old school exterior, dash and trim to a certain extent but with a more durable but yet liveable fast road/track and qtr mile ready all wrapped up into one to use when ever I feel like it but yet be capable of being driven every day to if needs be.
Been a little while without an update on my shell, I'm all ready for the body shop and I was ment to be in there this weekend welding and having some paint work done, but been let down at the last minute.
Anyway, I've got the wings off and check in the usual areas for rot etc and nothing else hiding so all good. :D
This is how the car stands as of now. Spent a couple of hours fully degreasing the the engine bay and made a start on flatting down the paint in the engine bay.

Fronts are 280mm dia 6 pot kit, still waiting on that, and I will be running Ferodo DS2500 pads (also still waiting on these. ). My car will be running a lot of power so as usual, decided not scrimp in this area. :cooter:

Really fancy that filter - what parts do I need?
Really fancy that filter - what parts do I need?
Quote from page one buddy. :agree:
I had to pay full price for it :( I brought it in two parts as you may of guessed, trumpet from forge for £45 I think? Then the filter was around £90? Universal green cotton jobbie, its pretty big. Then polished it by hand to give it a smooth surface to aid air flow and added bling.
You could buy one for a lot less, but I particularly wanted that one. If you go on eBay, tap in Cossie air filter, and you should find similar with a fake K&N filter on the end, cheaper option plus could swap the filter over at a later date if you wanna fussy like me. :D
Ps, Inlet on the air filter for trumpet section and large end of the trumpet is 150mm dia, so if your looking or want to fit bigger/longer air filter etc, your need 150mm inlet on the air filter to match.
Today goodies consist of gauge pod that will bolt to my roll cage that I'm still waiting on. This is to mount AEM AFR gauge, ive put it together for a snap shot. :D

Finally fitted my new dial kit. :D I see what people were saying about it being hard to photo these, just can't seem to capture the colour. :crap:
Got a set of clocks and mint screen panel off Bob at CGB, as mine was just the back part and broken and rusted on the back etc. :( Adjusted the mileage to 101,000 that I think roughly my car done as that what the clocks read on the old set and away we go.

Cheers mate. :D £37.50p plus £2.50 P&P from the club shop on here. :agree: Well worth the money.
Took me about two and half hours as was very gentle trying not to break anything and keep it all grease free and alcohol wiped the back lighting plates etc and fitted all new bulbs to. :scared:
Good work mate, look very fresh! needle resting positions look spot on too :agree: :)
I actually measured the gaps between the speedo number etc :ashamed: to make sure the resting points are correct which happen to be dead centre in the bottom two lines.
Then on the three small centre dials, I moved the needles round to where they didn't want to go no further, then set them about 1mm past that, then that was it and thats how they sit when resting, :D jobs a gooden.

Was flat out all yesterday till ten pm. :scared: Had to get the final parts off ASAP. :D
So, fuel tank and reserve removed along with fuel pump, filter, fuel lines, all brake lines, fuel pump and filter brackets, heat shield and anything else underside I could get my hands on I stripped off!

I got a deal with a friend of mine who is the work shop manger to have full use of all work shop equipment etc for the next four days and he will be helping me treat all rust spots, weld it and then he'll be painting the inner shell and engine bay for me after as I'm no pro.

Interesting recovery company you used, mate...:D
My car now has two rear bumper bracket mounts and front jacking points all fully welded up! :D
No pictures, didn't have time to keep stopping to take photos as way to much work to be done. :)
Turns out my roll age doesn't fit  front section is way to long, even if I was to cut it, it would be a foot each top side. :scared: Not only that, but the bottom feet on the rear section are a good six inches to sort and the rear plate are way off angle wise to. :crap:
So even if I was to start cutting, I would be pretty much cutting all of it to fit which is a bit more than the quoted "may need slight adjustments".
Just over three weeks wait for my cage and now the hassle of sending it back and waiting another min three weeks for a replacement, so that's another min four weeks set back as will need powder coating after pre fit.
Get ready for some more picture whoring of my last couple of days in the body shop! :D
Just uploading now.
So here we go, been at the body shop for a couple of days, so far so good, got a lot of things done. :D
Here it is on the ramps, stripped off the Torsion bar, broke the bars free, gave it a good go over with wire wheel etc then a good going over with hammerite.
I've not really got any before and after pictures as my time is limited and just wanted to crack on and get as much done as possible, but have taken a few before pic and some more today while eating my lunch. :)

http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps3f58cf8b.jpg
Full strip down and nearly two days of grinding, rubber, flatting, grinding the underseal off the whole bottom and arches etc  then full reseal. :D Going to add one last coat tomorrow as then il know its fully harden etc and easier to see if any little bits I've missed. :smokin:

Superb work sir
Thanks for all the positive comments! :agree:
It really does help motivate me to keep pushing on and not question myself on my decisions and direction with this build as I'm now just tipped over the 9K mark and still a long way off yet. :scared:
But with all that said, I'm starting to feel like I'm actually getting somewhere with it after continuously battling with stubborn rusted on bolts that refuse to undo and cover me in grease and dirt from old parts under the car that had been on for 23 years!
So close now to putting fresh clean parts on and seeing it all take shape and not look like its off to the scrap yard for once. :)
Another bonus is, there just happens to be a place across the road from the body that does sand blasting and powder coating which is a result as I've got two boxes of parts that want doing, already popped over and been given decent prices. :D
WATCH THIS SPACE! :smokin:
Oh, and had this eBay bargain waiting for me when I got home to! £13.92 brand new to my door.

Again, limited pictures time blar blar, but got a couple snaps of my engine bay. :)
Spent god knows how long flatting this down today and getting it smooth, then in the oven it went for primer, left to bake, then coat of paint. :D
It's a bit dry in a couple areas, no biggy as its only painted that colour for the moment as easy to touch up while sorting out my engine etc which be colour coded at later date once everything running right and looking factory fit :D but if possible I'm hoping we can get another coat on tomorrow, but my time there is at its end come dinner time, and still not got a the inside done along with a few other minor bits here and there, so see what we can get done and go from there I guess.

Well my time has come to an end at the body shop, car is ready to leave but still not had the new windscreen fitted yet so been left there till tomorrow for that. :)
I got the inside finish, but I'm far from happy with it, if any very disappointed to be frank. :(
Bottom line is, run out of paint so it not completely covered, ie need more layers putting down plus when the door was open loads of crap blew in and stuck here and there on the wet paint. :sad2:
No paint and no time left to reflat it all AGAIN and respray the whole rear section, so not sure what todo at the minute?
Ive got a couple of pics, but that was before we open the oven doors and a random whirl wind decided to ruin my day let alone the hours I put in on rubbing it all done etc.

Think I used three 1 litre bottles todo the full underside, made sure it got healthy coating.

Busy busy busy........ I've spent five days a week on this for the last two weeks solid. :crap:
It seems every time I think I've got it right, something else is wrong or needs replacing which is normaly no biggy, but when its things that are ment to be pre done and direct fit it then become very annoying to say the least correcting other people's "it will do" thrown together crap.
Forgetting the above, I'm making good steady progress and my welding skills are getting to a very good standard now to which you could say I've gotten carried away with it all and testing my limits with it as your see soon with what I've done to my sub frame! :D
Speaking of which, I've spent a lot of hours now on that, seem welded it, cut parts out and fabricated gussets etc. Just need to do a couple final touches then I can finally take it and aload of other parts to the powder coaters, then il post up pictures of what I've been doing.
Still buying and collecting parts, but as been so busy working away not really done any picture whoring, so here some more parts Ive been building up since my last update.
Genuine fuel filter.

Front wheel bearing kit.
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps9dfa6c9c.jpg
Ceramic heat wrap and ties. I've ordered so much of this, I might just wrap the whole system aswell as the manifold and down pipe! :D
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps2d06c82e.jpg
Oh, and lastly I got a fresh set of side skirt clips and few other nuts and bolts.
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zpsba274001.jpg
Engine pictures coming very soon! Kind of in bits at the moment. :scared:
More goodys, engine torque damper to go with custom bracket mounts I'm fabricating next week! More pictures to follow on that once finished. :D

19 Row external oil cooler, also got braided lines and stat but not here for to photo. :(

Also got these brake bracket spaces from Sid today to, top work, thanks very much. :agree:
http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg509/Goobie_Ali/RTOC%20Stuff/522fe505f1efd865609eab3e40236b80.jpg
Nothing else has been done to my shell since my week at the body shop as all my attention currently been on my engine, but its at its new home for the moment as out grown my dads garage as no space for my ever growing parts I've been rounding up etc. :)
So its now resting up on axel stands at a good friend of mine large garden drive with the bonus of near enough fully kitted out house of tools including compressor and the almighty welded, hence all the custom fabrications I've gotton carried with.
Basically this last two weeks ive been focusing on my engine bay and where everything is going to go. :D
In short, power steering rack turn out to not be as direct fit as I hope, so more work on the sub frame was done to clear pipes as running a uprated modified rear mount, then again where the barrel part sits I wasn't happy with how tight it all was but problem sorted now, pictures to come next week. :agree:
Engine wise, it is in along with gearbox, radiator and front mount intercooler, all for mock up to check for cleaner issuers etc.
Just needs bit more trimming here and there, rework boost run, oil cooler needs fitting into place, then get to work on a few other bits like rad pipes, header tank, exhaust, wastegate etc, after that once I'm happy with how everything sits and getting it all looking like its ment to be there from new, out it all will come and then I can finally get things powder coated all in one hit and work on putting it back in to start peacing it all together for its first turn over!
Sounds easy dont it!
Turbo heat sheild/blanket to go with my wrap etc. :D

First part of my custom turbo oil return! All made with one pipe, cut slots with welds, then grind all the welds down for smooth finish as seen, still bit more work to be done till finished, but comes down and shaped round the gearbox.

Made this external wastegate pipe from scratch yesterday. :D Curves round and clears everything and exits under the car without poking out and angled cut so won't catch speed bumps etc. Again, started grinding down the welds then remembered I'm heat wrapping it, so just tidy the rest. :) Loads more custom fabrications stuff next week!
:D

Good work on the screamer pipe mate. Where did you get turbo blanket from
Good work on the screamer pipe mate. Where did you get turbo blanket from
Thanks mate, pretty please with it, pops in and out easily without catching or on rubbing anything. :D
Got the turbo cover off eBay along with a load of ceramic heat wrap, originally wasn't on my list, but since I'm heat wrapping everything exhaust related, bit pointless wrapping the rest and not doing the charger.
Prices vary depending on turbo size. :agree:

remember to brace that screamer pipe up, got a lot of length on it, dont want it to cause cracking on the manifold
Bloody hell dude you get a bit carried away with your builds don't ya.
Looking quality mate. :agree:
Can't agree with Ewok enough. Brace that screamer pile to the engine or gearbox also brace the wastegate too. think I'm going to be on my fourth repair due to not having a brace or it not being good enough and I hate taking my car apart.

Thanks for the heads up guys and the comments.
Don't worry, its not finished yet plus there is bracket/braces for the Mainfold and turbo, just not got round to finishing off and post about that part of my build yet. :agree:
In ref to my screamer pipe, the pictures are deceiving, it kinda loops round the turbo so counter weights its self quite well and is very light and not actually that long atall, it will makes more sense once engine build pictures etc are up.
Ps, I see I've hit my photobucket limit again on one of the accounts. :scared: Picutres will be back working on that account next Tuesday.

if it vibrates and is only held at one end, it will crack. :agree:
Turns out my roll age doesn't fit  front section is way to long, even if I was to cut it, it would be a foot each top side. :scared: Not only that, but the bottom feet on the rear section are a good six inches to sort and the rear plate are way off angle wise to. :crap:
So even if I was to start cutting, I would be pretty much cutting all of it to fit which is a bit more than the quoted "may need slight adjustments".
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps17d73cee.jpg
Well as quoted from a couple of pages back its about time I update on this. :)
After a lot of backwards and forward emails and calls of not really getting anywhere about my cage that doesn't match up at any fixing points and them not willing to take it back as made to order I've decided I'm not wasting any more time on the matter and accepted their "goodwill gesture" percentage refund to pay towards fabrication cost, which unknown to them is me cutting it up  but never the less, when you order a bolt in item, you expect it to at least be close even with the stated minor adjustments.
Back more on topic, had to cut, reweld, bend, shape, pull, stretch, measure and re measure to make sure everything sits in the same spots on each corner with correct spacing all the way round the top of the frame etc. This had become very time consuming to say the least! :crap:
I also brought extra bars and fixing to add in as your see when I upload the pictures shortly. :D
It's not finished yet, but since I'm waiting on engine parts still I spent this week getting the cage in. It's almost finished now, just got the front section and door bars todo which il get cracking on with next week as no more time todo any work on it till Tuesday now. :(
Pictures to follow once uploaded shortly. :agree:

As soon as I saw the make of your roll cage I thought to myself, that's not going to fit! Then you said it was miles out. I totally agree it's a complete joke they can sell them as bolt in when they don't even fit inside the car!
Good work with the build so far, Wish I could do mine at the rate this has progressed. Looking forward to more updates :)
First step after a lot of in and out was to mark out where my base feet are going to go and get the heigh right. :)
I've set it so it has slight interference fit with the roof for added strength etc.
Here the base plates with drilled holes and nuts welded on the under side for direct no messing about bolt in fixing. :smokin:
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zpsd565ede2.jpg
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps9f6d75a6.jpg
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps5df654b1.jpg
Up next was making and shaping box section to fit in and weld.
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps433633e5.jpg
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zpsb7e6044c.jpg
My focus was then onto the rear feet that was so badly out, I just cut them off completely and started again.
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps19a22e07.jpg
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zpsf1a7e1ad.jpg
Now my rear plate mounts I previously welded in are in the wrong place and needed grinding off and completely re doing, and here you see they now gone and new marking etc been done with holes for the fixing nuts to clear and poke through.
After that, reused the base plate, bit more hammering to shape then grinding and shaping the rear base foot to fit properly, quick test fit and then weld the foot back on! :D
Repeat on other side to match, then flatted the welds.
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps4b48c66f.jpg
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps048387db.jpg
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps75064df4.jpg
Following on was rear base plate mounts, cut to shape, holes drilled for nuts to be welded, check fitment, then welded in. Again, cavity nut bolt fixing style so it actually bolts to the car and not through it with your usual loose nut bolt fixing. :smokin:
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps8bfa91f1.jpg
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zpsd0cef306.jpg
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zpsda882294.jpg
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zpsa1e1f141.jpg
10/10 for effort with the cage, but that would drive me nuts having to do all that! Goobie as ever the attention the detail is spot on, always 100% with your builds
Now I had the rear in and sitting in the right places on each corner, it was all bolted up nice and solid, I could them move on to adding some extra bars in for strength that I brought separately. :D
I started with the two bottom base feet.
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps728c78ce.jpg
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zpsbfa405e5.jpg
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zpsd8e8447f.jpg
Then the boot cross bar which I will be adding a sneaky trick mod to next week that I've not seen done, but here it is so far to help keep things tight etc. :) Ive welded the bracket clamps so its over the middle of the cut/reweld I had todo to the base feet so it has extra re enforcement etc. :D
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zpsad337f7a.jpg
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps49877040.jpg
And that brings me upto where I am with that till next week now. Just got the front section todo and door bars which will be easy after the above. :agree:
Looking pretty good, toying with the idea of adding a diagonal roof bar?? hmm......

"Well Jell" of the welding skills! :D
Well, what awesome, quality work this is after such a cock up by the 'professionals'. Big congrats :agree:
Excellent work :agree:
Re the roll cage, did the rear feet originally mount on the boot floor as opposed to the arches?
10/10 for effort with the cage, but that would drive me nuts having to do all that! Goobie as ever the attention the detail is spot on, always 100% with your builds
Thanks Rick-ski! Wasn't happy and fed up wasting time waiting for parts etc so just got on with it and pretty pleased with the out come so far! :D
That's awesome:agree:
Thanks buddy! More to come. :agree:
Ace stuff. Looks great...
Fancy doing the welding on my car ;)
Nope  up intill 5/6 weeks ago I've never touch a welder. My out look on most things in life are if some one else can do it, then I can! :D
It's not been easy, I'm very lucky to have a good friend who has all these top tools that I don't have in my tool boxes and letting me use them aswell as taking over the garden and back room of his house with loads of parts for my car.
He has given me a lot of help and advice so much so I can't really thank him enough and he never ask me for anything in return. :smokin:
"Well Jell" of the welding skills! :D
Thanks buddy, they come out really well, so well in fact that Im not even going flat them down for the smooth look as I was going to give everything the smooth and one piece look.
Well, what awesome, quality work this is after such a cock up by the 'professionals'. Big congrats :agree:
It was way out, but some of it could be down to transporting it from Itailly, must of changed hands a few times between delivery people and we all know how much care these people take etc even though this is steel, its still not got anything linking the feet to keep it within rough spec. :sad2:
Excellent work :agree:
Re the roll cage, did the rear feet originally mount on the boot floor as opposed to the arches?
No, was always the arches, but they where completely wrong angle and rotation, all fixed now. :D
Thanks everyone for all the positive comments. :agree:
Got loads of one off attention to details little touches coming up in the next two weeks. :smokin:
Roll cage saga continued. :) Started with the front feet, the base plate were to big to be honest and crap hole pattern, so cut them off, made new ones.
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps40b95916.jpg
Made up new base feet platforms, shaved to shape and captive nuts welded to the underside. ;)
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zpscb4f0545.jpg
Popped in the car to check placement and fitment with front cage section refitted to then tacked into place.
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps21198980.jpg
New feet welded on. :D
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps8fbe3202.jpg
Then fully welded up and end plates made to box it up. :smokin:
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps2a0653ee.jpg
Quick going over to tidy it up and flat the welds.
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps75dd685e.jpg
Now the front was all in and straight, onto my door bars. Cut to length, brackets welded on and here stage one! :D
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps7dc5f42a.jpg
Now time to add extra protection, cut the bar to length and shaped it round the door bar leaving me with this.
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps56eb42f1.jpg
Then welded along with the bolt on brackets. :smokin:
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps9c08f088.jpg
Fits like a glove! :D
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps7a201228.jpg
Then decide I'm not going to stop there. :agree:
Out come more steel, again, more chopping and shaping. :D
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zpsad2cef86.jpg
In it goes. :cooter:
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps823f938a.jpg
Every main section been welded in car, so to make sure from the heat of the welds nothing moves out of place etc.
Now removed it all to get to small gaps that couldn't be reached when fitted and to check all welds are 100% complete with no pin holes etc.
And that's where I am with it as of now. :D
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps87062440.jpg
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps696c549d.jpg
As your see from the top of this page, my non fitting roll cage has come a long way from its quoted "bolt in some minor adjustments maybe required"
Think I must of cut and re welded everything apart from the main hoop and rear diagonal bar on this. :crap:
I used additional five meters of steel and six extra bolt fixing attachments brackets, which brings my cage total cost to £721.01p minus post and obviously zero labor. :D
Hopefully get it down to the powder coaters next week and then best get the inside of my shell repainted again!
Pretty pleased with the final result even tho it has taken two weeks and a lot of messing about.
Next week, hopefully get on with my engine build now more parts Ive been waiting on have turn'd up. :agree:
Build cost as of today now stands at £10,860.06p :scared:
WATCH THIS SPACE...............
Last post about my roll cage, promise.
Added the last finishing touches today, didn't want todo the classic harness wrapped round the rear brace job, so welded nuts into the rear boot brace for the harness to bolt to.
Cage is now finish and ready to be taken for powder coating. :smokin:

God I hate you! Lovely work mate!:cooter:
Seat mount time.
My bucket seat side brackets feet width worked out to be to wide, they fitted in on the original frame runners but the seats were way off center of steering wheel and wouldn't fit with my roll cage door bars, so scraped it completely and decide to rework it all as didn't want to buy any nasty heavy universal sub frames. :scared:
So, I ordered some more steel, instead.
Here goes, firstly chopped up some 2 by 4 steel to length and shaped it, then support base plate brackets and welded it all up after marking out where they want to sit etc.
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zps5d69b1ff.jpg
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zpsd6ffa4f3.jpg
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zpsf8e845a3.jpg
Then welded in cavity nuts and flatten the welds, but then it started raining so welded got put away with only one side done. :(
Il finish them off next week and tidy them up.
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zpsfa4adeff.jpg
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zpsd012db61.jpg
As it was raining, I decided to put my new spot weld drill bit to use and remove the last of the unwanted/needed brackets and mounts, so off came the old rear seat slots. :D
http://i1344.photobucket.com/albums/p651/GoobieAli/image_zpsdbee0ce9.jpg
Enjoying this thread chap. Keep up the good work
And then the annoyingly now not needed original seat mounts to give it more of a cleaner look etc.

Whilst I'm not finished with the inside, decided I best fill a few spot weld holes in, flatten them down, rust prevention treat them and my roll cage mount boxes etc then a couple of layers of primer for now till I get round to rubbing down the whole inside for a respray AGAIN!

Why did you paint the inside then do all the welding afterwards?
Why did you paint the inside then do all the welding afterwards?
Well, few reason, some as already mention in this thread. Roll cage was ment to be bolt in, I had time slot in the body shop with full use of all equipment etc, but my cage turned up just as I got my car tailed there only to find it was way off fitment wise etc.
So I did the best I could with the rear mount plates as I was sending the cage back to swap for another that should fit then would of only been a case of adding base plates in later that I could touch up myself as wouldn't of been seen because the carpet will hide it, but obviously that all went out the window as they wouldn't take the cage back so had to get creative as seen above. :)
Also, the final finish I wasn't happy with as mention and then my plans for mounting my seats changed, so no real biggy in the long run, it was only the cost of paint to have the inside spray anyway as I've been making full use of all my contracts in various trades and calling in favours owed. :D
This build would easily be a lot more £'s if I wasn't doing it myself and calling in favours plus I've managed to get a lot of discount on parts I've been getting in.
