thanks for all the positive feedback fellas, i think everyone who has seen it has said the same things, it would of been easy to either reshell it or break it for parts but wheres the fun in that ;)

my good mate george at gt motorsport is doing all the work for me he has restored many cars down the years and i think it shows, im getting it done at mates rates but still an expensive job.

i would of uploaded the pics individually but i didnt want it taking over the live board and thought it might be easier for you to flick through the album and id notify you via the thread when more pics are added

Been down there today as well and had a look at your car andy while you weren't there! Looking good pal, I cant believe how bad it was especially the view of the rear tyres through the boot!

You've done everything very well, the welding is excellent and I suppose its like a new chassis again.
Once its painted it will definatley be like a new car. Well done :agree:

i also then painted the handbrake lever and the pedals as they were a bit tired, got some new rubber pedal covers on order from mike to go on.
We were going to re fit the carpet and start putting some of the interior back in but i took the carpet home to wet vac it and my god was it filthy done it twice it was that bad.

Ash (redoctober) also has his car up at gt motorsport having alot of engine work/nodiz install etc being done and he took a random pic of the 2 motors together, both cars have attracted alot of attention according to the guys who run the garage as they are such a rare sight nowadays.

First post!

Hello mate, I used to own your 'yesmobile'! Glad you have restored it, I just re-joined RTOC today as I was thinking about getting a GTT again sometime.

I had the car for 4 years, bought it off some idiot who didn't tell me the clutch was on the way out (I should have figured it out really!) so first job owning a 5 was taking the engine out and changing the clutch. That was 8 years ago now!
It also came with some chav wheels, so I bought some turbines and painted them black, which I thought looked great (and still does judging by your pics!).

I sold the car early in 2009 as it needed money spending on it that I didn't have, only got £900 for her, but unfortunately I needed a more sensible car for work. I saw it on ebay a few months later, with some additional modifications, and with the water injection removed, I don't know why that was removed it did a top job of cooling boost.

It was a great car to drive, and I am really glad it is in good hands, your hard work will pay off when you come to sell it, they seem to be appreciating a lot.

I apologies for those horrible seats, the originals were wrecked and I found those buckets on ebay for 50 quid, which was a lot cheaper than fixing them.

I bet it is quick now you have tuned it up! It's good to see an original bodywork 5, there are a lot of bodykit ones on ebay, I never saw the need to change the bodywork as Renault did a great job on it!

hi tom firstly welcome back to rtoc :) and good to hear your thinking of getting another r5gtt, iv got an rolling road day sorted for april 20th at noble motorsport in chesterfield maybe you could pop along and meet a few of the guys etc?

nice to hear a bit of history on the car and when iv looked back at the history you seem to have looked after the car well, thank god you changed the wheels :).
it was an absolute nail when i bought it dont think the guy had got a clue tbh.

you would win that bet, its an absolute animal now and might just have a few more bhp when its up and running again.

good news a couple more jobs have been done on my car :)

braided brake hoses are now fitted
cupro nickel brake lines are now fitted

bad news iv had to get 2 new front brake calipers but got them for £55 each which i thought is not a bad price.

had a really productive morning working on my car, got a first coat of dye on the front seats, then decided to set the fuelling/idle up.
Took quite a while as it was running a bit groggy and kept cutting out, was really lean so whipped carb off and fitted a new base gasket thanks to Ash Findler (redoctober).

put it all back together had a bit of a fettle and got it idling/running sweet, idles bang on 1k with afr of 14.2-14.5.

17-05-2013, 04:57
i popped up to paintshop yesterday in between jobs they are really cracking on with it and he tells me it should be finished back end of next week or very early the following week.

iv had to order a few more bits, passenger rear arch kit/drivers underlight trim/front grill and all required bits to refit kit.

sorry no pics as iv left my camera with them so there will be a load of pics to upload once its done

i popped around bodyshop on way from work, not much more been done but he tells me hes back on it tomorrow and should be done by end of next week, im not holding my breath too much and have actually told him dont worry if its not done for cpop in june as i dont want him rushing it

BluntyR5GTT
02-06-2013, 06:55
so i received the last bits from mike on friday and popped up to paintshop to drop them off, still no more had been done on my car so im not too confident of it being ready for cpop on the 15th this month.

i went up to see if any progress had been made on my car and a bit had been done, he tells me it will be in primer on saturday, so iv now resigned myself to the fact that my car wont be ready in time for pageant of power next weekend :(.
Even is the paint is finished at some point next week its still got to be m.o.t'd and taxed plus need to fine tune the fuelling all of which i will have no time to do due to being at work, ideally it needed be ready for at the latest this weekend so i could of sorted all of the above

the painter tells me it should be in primer on saturday and has told me to go up and see for myself, hopefully it will be. Iv also sorted a way of getting my car for mot if my car is finished at some point next week, so who knows we could still make pageant of power in the yesmobile

BluntyR5GTT
09-06-2013, 08:33
well heres the not so suprising update

i went upto my car yesterday around dinnertime and no more progress had been made, apart from the car is now in centre of workshop which means it will be getting worked on.

i had a few 'words' with the painter as he obviously stated to me more than once that it would be alot more advanced than what it is, he also promised me it would be ready for the 2nd week in june. He actually still tried tell me that it would be done back end of next week to which i cut him short and stated even if he worked on the car flat out for 5 days theres no chance it would be finished.

this is whats annoyed me as i wasnt to arsed about the car being done for a certain time, but the guy has kept feeding me false hope, needless to say he wont try and bs me again, he was told politely just be bloody honest.

Seems to be a common issue with body shops. Mine hasn't been touched in ages although in fairness I am not in a huge rush at the moment. However they have had it somewhere in the region of 9 months now.

I think its big jobs in general.... u get the everyday little jobs out the way as there needed done quick then the big jobs that "aren't in a rush" get put off. Crap situation but unless its a large company this happens pretty much everywhere.
We used to think we were being nice by saying we'll "try" to get it done tomorrow, but we've now learnt its best to just say realistically we cant touch it for a week, that way if we get it done early its a bonus :D
Nothing worse than putting a customer back once nevermind a few times :(

The black paint is called a guide coat. You flat the panel down and if there's any black paint showing still you know that this is a low point, so you sand some more untill it's gone but not right through the yellow. If you still have black spots but start to sand through the yellow you need to fill the black spots. Then sand then primer then start it over again. Maybe over the top but I hope this answered your question.

i must admit that im very impressed by what they have done, and for the price im paying for all the work its great ;)
haha they are a good bunch of characters thats for sure, the guy you see on one of the picks with his white overalls on owns a mint saph cosworth, fiesta rs turbo and an a reg escort cabriolet which is an ongoing project.

yes bump strips were already color coded from previous owner(s) so stuck with that, i wished i had remembered to get the mirror base plates color coded as they look very dated/faded.

Hi Andy, wow she looks lovely!!! I will have to pop over for a look one day!!! Totally agree on the stickers, just a thought though. I was talking to a painter the other week about my 5 & he said you should wait a good week or 2 before fitting decals to allow something to happen in the new paint (cant remember what exactly, evaporation of a chemical maybe??) don't know if he was talking sense or not but its something to bear in mind. Don't want bubbles appearing in those nice new stickers.

great stuff andy glad you have stuck with it

i managed to fully waxoyl the car and we also made a new fuel reserve tank support strap as mine was knackered.

onto the decals everything was going fine all fitted and looked the business and then we come to remove the protective covers off them :sad2: all i can say is it wouldnt hardly budge even with some heat on them, so it looks as if im going have to remove them and have the bottoms of my doors etc re painted not happy at all

noooo.
hope they come off without to much hassle so that you dont have to repaint. do you know what material has been used for the decals as i can ask the lads in the sign shop at work what will be the best way to remove without to much damage. always a pain when things dont go to plan

Was the paint not hard enough or are the decals at fault mate, big shame if this has to end up back at the painters due to crap decals :(

its just the protective top film thats the problem, it should in theory peel away fairly easily but it just wont budge and the bits that did were leaving glue behind on the decal and obviously with it being so hard to remove was going to lift the actual decal

as you might see from the decal group buy thread, its a balls up on the person who was fitting my decals part as there is no protective film to remove so that one piece has to be removed then painted as no doubt it will remove paint, then refit that one decal

yes anything similar to this iv always seen to have a film over them.

bit of an update topcat is sending me another passenger door decal up, what a top fella he is and a real credit to this club.
I also went the pub last night and car painter was there, he is going to sort the passenger door free of charge which is really good of him and its going in monday morning.
