Haha nice one mate, the amount of rot taken out of your car is unbelievable! Great that you saved it pal, when u reckon you'll be driving her then?. Ordered my decals from mike so can't wait to get them, then she needs a respray, it's all happening at the mo tho, selling the leon for a boring everyday car so I can pay more attention to the old girl. Gota be done really

well my car was meant be going in for mot today, as always with the argumentative little swine it decided my fuel pump wasnt going to work, so looks like its the relay, hopefully going bridge the wires tomorrow and get it sorted.

BluntyR5GTT
09-07-2013, 17:09
thought id just keep anyone interested informed on the fuel pump situation, we tested the relay and even bridged it and still no joy,.
then fount we had no live going to the pump we tried a few things including running a wire from battery to pump which got it working, then traced the wiring in the car to find one of the connection boxes on drivers side.
tested to see what lives we had which we could see one offending green wire which was only lighting up very dim and by chance i noticed when my mate was moving it about it was sending my fuel gauge up and down.

so it looks like we have fount the problem its just a matter of getting it sorted hopefully be able persuade my auto electrician mate pop up to the garage one day and sort it.

BluntyR5GTT
15-07-2013, 16:12
bit of an update for you guys

got the fuel pump issue sorted out (bloody electrics) and whilst at it sorted all the wiring for the dash so now everything works as it should.

I have just this second sorted 6 months tax for the car online, so alls it is a matter of is finishing the remaining last bits and ill be finally back out boosting

If all goes to plan I could very well be taking it for a shakedown to donington park on sunday for the rs owners club national day.
It did 230bhp last time it was on wgt hub dyno in oct 2011. Theres more in there now as well

cheers matty, i think if someone offered the right money then id sell it and id imagine the mrs would be happy haha.

engine wise is pretty basic nothing fancy

t28.63 turbo @23psi
285 cam
headwork
ported inlet

just a note that when it did 230 it was running mega rich (10.6afr @wot) also had 2" system and ktec downpipe on oe elbow. fuelling is now leaned out to around 11.4 afr and full 2.5" system with bjr downpipe/elbow, have also had a billet comp wheel fitted into turbo

I'm interested to see the results of this billet comp wheel it's something I'm considering myself. Was the comp wheel the same size as the one that was on before?

From what I have been lead to believe billet compressor wheels came about to cope with higher pressure ratios (2.5 bar+) on turbos where the cast wheel would burst.

Interesting, will the fin design help with efficiency at lower boost levels, or am i just pie in the sky and it won't make a jot of difference at lower boost levels?

I can sort of understand how something lighter and thinner will be more efficient over a heavier thicker item.

here's 1 more mod you can do to that type of turbo fit a t34 compressor wheel into the t3 compressor housing, on my car proven 12.1 at pod on a carb standard ignition without noz ;)

hi phil its defo larger has longer tips and so im told about 15% more flow than the pulsar wheel.

BluntyR5GTT
21-07-2013, 07:37
nice one phil i defo wouldnt say its flawless but its defo good enough for me and a huge improvement on how it was.

had fun yesterday went a drive out with the mrs to a country pub so i decided give it a bit of stick on a nice open part of road 2nd gear full boost all hell breaks loose changes to 3rd and nothing no boost at all.

so i carried on to the pub then investigated after we had lunch, fount it to be the bloody actuator rod had come off the bracket hence no boost, got it refitted and burnt the feck outta my thumb and finger.
only prob was then it was making way to much boost like 30psi+ so i drove it off boost until we got home, then adjusted rod again and turned bleed valve right off, didnt have chance to pop back out as we were going to meet up with a few mates.

ill report back with my findings later on.

I have a new billet comp wheel on my new Gerrett t28 RB. Boosts earlier by about 500-1000 rpm. Worthy upgrade for drivability and mid range torque.

The extra lag will be because it's a bigger wheel, either that or there's a boost leak somewhere, like for like in trim size and the billet wheel should reduce lag not increase it.;)

ay up ash dont worry fella i hav got to the bottom of the whole issue, seems like when george refitted my turbo he didnt fit the nut that goes on actuator rod hence why there isnt any preload (or is for 2 mins then gone).

case and point yesterday i got it back at just under 20psi for all of about 5 mins then it was 10 then nothing, drove back most way from donington as an n/a c1j :sad2:

easy fix though and hopefully get it sorted this week sometime

BluntyR5GTT
23-07-2013, 15:13
got an early finish from work today so got home and sorted the actuator rod out finally fount a nut that fitted nice and set the preload, going to take the car out later on to see whats what then ill report.

right fellas im probably doing something really obvious but id sooner check with you lot who have seen it/done it a million times.

since i refitted my turbo its gained alot of lag like 500-700rpm full boost now iv spoke to turbo builder and also dave clark who fitted one of these billet wheels into his turbo and they both say it should if anything be on song earlier dave especially says his was something like 250-500rpm sooner.

so i was trying to think what could be the problem and come up with a little list (yes prob some of it wont affect things) but iv put it in there anyway just in case.

just to note the turbo is spooling up at 2k so id think it should be on song at least at same time as old set up at 4k

list

wrong preload on actuator?
cam timing slipped?
tdc sensor ?
boost leak?

any help would be much appreciated

always worth checking for boost leaks especially if your pipe run has lots of joins, and for the record good quality jubilee clips are far more reliable than mikalor clips, I had nothing but problems with mine.

If the comp wheel is bigger then this would surly mean it would reach full boost a little later, but like you say you have got quite a lot of extra lag. The increase in size should have been off set by the fact it's a billet wheel I guess.

What was the actuator boost before the new wheel and is it the same now? Do you use any boost control devices other than the actuator?

hi phil sorry i never got back to you fella :ashamed:

iv not had much time to do anything on the car as i was on my hols all last week, but i managed get a couple of hours last night to do a bit.

firstly i decided i wanted to replace the german ebay 2mm needle valve and refit the oe solex needle valve which i had drilled out to 2mm.
so i took carb top etc etc off and did this no probs.
But on removal of carb top i noticed the drivers side pin was hardly even pinch tight, so i got it back together and went to refit carb top all went well until getting to the drivers side fitting it wouldnt tighten at all and must be threaded, so this is where some of my boost could of been going?
i now have the required bit ordered off mike and hopefully will have it here saturday.

i also adjusted the actuator to get it sitting more square as the rod didnt look square at all tbh.

boost is the same matey and i also use a bleed valve checked all this and no leaks from there.

iv done a bit more research on billet wheel and my mate tells me there is no increase in size.

im now hoping with the oe needle valve fitted that the fuelling can be sorted and also fingers crossed might of fount the boost/lag issue

Loose carb top probably the fault:agree:

Check all your hoses thoroughly. I had the smallest split under a jubilee clip on the van that caused all sorts of problems, boost dropping off and slow spool etc. Only found it on the off chance.

Pre-load on the actuator can make a difference. On a high boost setup you want a fair bit in my opinion, i have between 10-15mm and a bleed off  obviously be careful when testing you can see mega boost very easily.

BluntyR5GTT
08-08-2013, 18:14
thanks mr briggs

haha i know about the boost testing as i got over 30psi when we were trying sort it:laugh:

i really do hope it was the carb top causing it as that will be an easy fix, best thing is id of probably never of checked it as id presume it was tight, lesson learnt :agree:

ill report back on how much preload is on the turbo atm, id say its around 8mm at a guess

i shall also have a good check over the hoses i do know one of the intercooler hoses looks a bit worse for wear but its only on the surface and doesnt seem to have gone through the hose.

well yesterday i finally got the 2 required studs off mike so i could refit my carb top etc, got it all on nice and no gaps like before, so i thought lets give it a test now goes to start the car and battery was virtually flat :sad2:, so iv stuck my battery booster on charge and will hopefully get to fire the car into life either today or tomorrow evening

BluntyR5GTT
21-08-2013, 06:12
finally got around to getting the car started last night, it fired into life and then died and would not start again, so i decided to take the carb completely off and strip it down/clean out and build back up. I also removed the spark plugs and gave all them a clean and they certainly needed it with how the car has been overfuelling.
refitted carb and plugs and she fired up straight away i just had to reset the idle speed and mixture which iv never known to adjust so easily, so fingers crossed we might have a much better fuelling carb now, i will find out on friday as im using my car to go onto a job as my van is in for m.o.t

a long overdue update

i was seriously toying with the idea of selling the car and having a break from the whole car scene for a while, but i have decided to keep it an hopefully get some good use out of it this year.

first job is to renew the wiring for the fuel pump as its gone dodgy and as a result the car wont start, iv still not got to the bottom of the turbo boost issue i cant find any leaks or anything so i will be sending the turbo back to my mate for a check over just incase something is a miss there.

well guys after a a long overdue delay i can now say the car is finally back alive :)

first off i have to say a huge thanks to ex member GT Josh (josh reeves) for taking time on a saturday to head upto Stoke from Oldham and spend a good 2-3 hours sorting the starting problem and then having a good old fettle with carb and a general check over things.
The problem turned out to be a temperamental fuel relay so i now know what to go to if it decides to play up again.
fitted new carb top which obviously got rid of the air leak from there as it was only sealing on 2/3 studs.
once started josh picked up that the carb needs new throttle shaft seals and possibly a couple of base gaskets, he also advised me to get a new dizzy and rotor as it wasnt firing as well as could be.
Honestly must say josh's knowledge on the little c1j is amazing and i do hope he comes back to the scene in the future.
i was also told that i could move my radiotor over a few inches so that i can run the intercooler pipe directly down the front and give it a bit more space than it has now, josh proceeded to give me the piece of piping that would be required to fit to modify the top rad hose :agree:

after all this he wouldnt take a penny off me, so he had a beer then was forced to take £20 and i gave him a couple of never used bodybuilding powders that he could sell and make £30-40 as i know hes big into the bodybuilding and surely someone would take them.

anyways i know mike at gt spares is having a few issues lately so i decided to make an order from cgb as i need stuff asap.

i ordered the following
full carb rebuild kit
new mixture screw
new dizzy and rotor arm
new carb base mounting gaskets
new ngk b8eg spark plugs

i also got a pair of throttle shaft green seals from the rtoc club shop. im off out today to get a new battery from gsf as mine is defo past its best.

so my job will be to do all the above and also reduce 1st stage on carb down to 0.8 to start and go from there as its too rich off boost.

also got to send turbo back to my mate for a check over so going to remove it today and get it sent off

heres a brief vid of the car running :)

honestly iv been in a few other car scenes, vauxhall, ford and mg and none of them come close to the renault 5 scene for sticking together and helping each other out its a credit to the owners :)

i also have to give a big mention to james poole who drove from crewe on friday to where i was working in stoke and dropped me a bag full of parts free of charge which included uprated fuel pump, and numerous relays, he wouldnt take any money so i will donate some money for his dyno run in april

GTphil
23-02-2014, 14:23
Sounds all good, he had a good teacher did josh ;) plus he loves being paid in protein:laugh: :cooter:

Nothing wrong with parking them up for a few months every now and again, That's half the reason I have managed to keep hold of mine for the 10 years it will be this July. being able to half a break every now and then.

I heard you mention reducing the first stage, I have been doing the same and my set up doesn't seem to like it to small. I tried .6mm and it was very lean couldn't get the boost up past 18psi before the afr's went above 12.6. tried a .9 and that was a little better, i'm now at 24psi and It's ever so slightly lean again, 12.6, so the first stage is going back to standard 1mm.

BluntyR5GTT
23-02-2014, 14:57
He defo paid attention hes a cracking lad and hope he cab make it to the dyno day in april.

My intention is to try it at .8 first and see how it goes from there then ill adjust accordingly. Iv been what I would say getting false afr readings for a bit due to the air leak on carb so will be interesting to see what its like after this.

Thanks for the heads up matey.

missed my bloody delivery from cgb though so gotta get the mrs go n pick it up tomorrow before she goes to work as i start before 7am when the sorting office opens.

picked my parts up yesterday, so now i can fully rebuild the carb and as said even have the green shaft seals that never seem to get replaced

also as mentioned changing the dizzy and rotor plus a new set of plugs, will be dropping the oil and sticking new oil/fuel filters on there so all is nice and fresh.

turbo arrived at my mates place yesterday afternoon so fingers crossed we get a quick turnaround so i can get it back on asap.

will just be a matter of fine tuning the fuelling and setting boost at 23-24psi and then it will get it first trip out this year to donington park for the btcc in april followed by its overly long awaited trip back to wgt for a run on there hub dyno to see if we have gained any power

my road tax should arrive today so hopefully when i get home its there, then my good mate justin (ex ep motorsport) at jl automotive has told me to take my car down there so i/we can finish the last few jobs off as it will be much easier than trying do it all on my drive.

whilst sorting though some of my parts im fount genuine renault fuel and oil filters and these will both be fitted when the car is up on the ramps doing oil change etc, i also received my new turbo housing studs as one of mine was damaged in transit so was able only to fit 4/5 of them.

i still have to refit my front and rear strut braces and whilst doing so iv decided to freshen up the front suspension with new top mounts/top hats and top strut bearings as who knows how long they have been on the car and they are going to be taking a bit of stick this year

finally have got to the bottom of the rich running issue and will have it sorted by the weekend, i also discovered a very slight tear in my vacuum hose so was defo leaking there.

i ordered and received a new length of vacuum hose which ill fit and i have my carb completely in bits awaiting a few bits for it, couple of new springs etc (which arrived today).

iv got half day off work on friday so the carb will all be put back together and other little jobs done then hopefully get it back on the car saturday and get out for a test drive

Have you sorted the boosting yet?
A visual inspection of hoses/joints is nowhere near enough.
You would be amazed how many leaks you find with a pressure test. Some might not show up till over a bar.
I pressure test mine every time I touch the boost circuit.
Get a tester on there and pump it up to a couple of psi over what you plan on running and listen for leaks, they will be obvious.
You might be able to fix them by just tightening or if not then put another jubilee clip on next to it with the worm drive opposite the other.

I made my own tester with a 2" waste ridding access (any plumbing shop will have them) then drilled and siliconed a tyre valve into the cap, then I just used off cuts of silicone hose to increase the size as necessary.
Put it where the air filter goes.

well i had a very productive afternoon iv now fully rebuilt the carb and replaced all the offending items, was a good job id bought another carb as spares as i ended up swapping a few bits over.

i will now be refitting the carb tomorrow and resetting the idle fuelling and idle speed there is now finally light at the end of the tunnel

BluntyR5GTT
20-03-2014, 17:57
nice one for the heads up stu, fact is i never had another chance to see if the boosting issue had been solved, but id imagine the carb top only sealing on 2/3 studs and also the slight split in vacuum hose must of been a big cause of boost leak.
both of these issues have been addressed so fingers crossed its solved it :)

*big update*

after many false starts my car is finally back on the road so was out yesterday for its first boosting of 2014 :)

only ran it at 15-16psi to shake some cobwebs off it but the grin factor was certainly there had so many people rubber necking including a fella in a porsche 911 who couldnt stop looking at it then gave me the thumbs up with a big smile on his face :)

i have decided to invest in a pair of uniroyal rainsport 3 tyres in 195/45/15 as my current rainsport 2s on the front are 195/50/15 and are catching my arches on full lock, i also believe the rainsport 3s are meant to be another step up from the 2s and if so that can only be a winner as i really rate the rs2 as a road tyre.

all i have to do now is get the car to my mates garage to carry out a few jobs before its back on the road properly.

oil and filter
fuel filter
new dizzy and rotor
move radiator over a few inches so can run intercooler pipe where there is more space
new top mounts/top hats/bearings etc
fit new tyres
refit front n rear strut braces
and a good general health check over the engine make sure theres no leaks etc etc

not long until my car goes into my mates garage to get all these required/niggling jobs done.

i also by complete luck fount another very slight boost leak coming from the vacuum hose t piece which connects to the aei unit, i have now got a new connector and will get it fitted when all the work is going ahead. i also have a coolant leak which iv got a good idea is coming from one of the carb base hoses, i also have replacement ones to rule that out

04/04/2014
change of plan yet again, my car is now going to my mates garage next thurs/friday i have also managed to book both days off work so i can go along and muck in and hopefully get it finished in the 2 days.

10/04/2014
been up at my mates garage from 9.30 until 3.00 today got a load of jobs done including fixing many bodges.

jobs done today
fitted new dizzy and rotor
fitted new spark plugs
renewed vacuum hose from turbo to bleed valve/bleed valve to carb
removed old plastic t piece from aei vacuum hose and replaced with straight connector
removed carb and cleaned out plus reduced first stage jet to 0.8 (1.00 standard) and refitted
dropped the oil/renewed sump plug and washer, fitted new oil filter and renewed oil.
fitted new fuel pump and fuel filter brackets
fitted new fuel filter
relocated fan relay and renewed terminals on wiring
fitted new genuine o ring on idle screw

once this was done she was then fired into life and instantly ran much better we got the idle to steady in between 13.8-14.2 afr which is fine for me, we will now be road testing it tomorrow to check on the boost were running and the afr's.

got a few more jobs to do first though including

fit front and rear strut braces
remove and refit side skirts properly
fit new tyres (uniroyal rainsport 3)
fit new wheel nuts and locking nuts
purchase 2 new front windscreen wipers and fit

some pics from today

pics from today car is now back on the road running 20psi so still 3psi short of what it used to run fuelling is at 11.3afr full boost so defo room for increase.
will be turned up to 23psi ready for going on the dyno on the 26th april to see if we have gained anything.
uniroyal rainsport 3s have to be the best road legal non slick based tyre iv ever used and they still aint bedded in yet.
front and rear strut braces are now refitted and new top hats/bearings with uprated rubber doughnuts, car feels planted and so responsive on the steering.

Hi mate hope your well thanks for the positive comments.

I am pretty chuffed especially as the car can now be used as much as possible iv really regained my bond with the xar over the last 2 months. It honestly lost its appeal after the resto for a few reasons so many bodges have had be put right.

Im hoping that my brother can take my car upto the dyno next weekend to see what's what.

hi mark hope your well fella

just a few bits and bobs, going go for a larger rad possibly off the 1.6 diesel? then external oil cooler.

i have negotiated a deal for a proper genuine 27mm group A carb kit from france, and also talking to xenon about getting one of his mates programmable aei units :)

still toying with the idea of going for larger exhaust valves in the head but not wanting go for metro turbo ones as they seem to be a bit fragile

and all this will be done on the complete hush hush from the future wife whilst the car is in my mates garage all over winter

we then headed to scholar green to a little country pub for some dinner and a drink, car performed great didnt miss a beat just have to work the gearbox a bit more now due to the new spec turbo being a bit laggy, hopefully will be able to dial a bit of this out with mappable aei :agree:

bit of a boring update

weather depending we might be going to darley moor this sunday for the thundersprint event, if we do go were going go in the r5 again i said i want it to be used as much as possible this year and this would put another 85-90 miles on it

another update which is not so boring is that im toying with the idea of going for a full efi conversion on my engine but gotta wait on a couple of things before we can see if i can go for it, failing that it will 100% be getting the mappable aei from france :agree:

Has anyone shown the results and are living with this conversion? I know the stats looke great but has anyone put plenty of miles onto there 5?

Big update

as above i was really toying with the idea of going for the mappable aei unit from the french guys, but iv decided to go the whole hog and bin the carb and go for a full efi conversion :)

iv already been in contact with scoff with regards to fitting/mapping and am hopefully buying the efi inlet from michael tierney end of this month, i shall then gather parts as and when maybe one thing a month eg cossie fuel pump one month then vxr injectors next one etc.

scoff already does the efi conversion kit so that will be purchased through him along with coil pack and leads.

i really think my cars engine will be amazing with an efi conversion im not to fussed about peak figures more so a more linear power curve with much more low/mid range also much better mpg and turn key starting :)

that's cool andy another efi 5 on the board, this is what mike was going to do but bought a f7r instead the mad fecker:laugh::laugh:

BluntyR5GTT
13-05-2014, 17:09
i was thinking about the f7 route myself but i cant bring myself to let the c1j go, i see it as retaining an integral part of the car but giving it a more modern lease of life :)

13-05-2014, 17:14
andy im on a similar page to you and many others, that a 5s not a 5 realllly without the c1j, not critisizing any other engines but my opinion, but ya cant tell ya step kids anything can ya:laugh:

Hi ive efi ed mine about september time and since then ive done about 1200 miles and its amazing turn key and go much better mpg and the power comes in earlier down the revs. And its smoother to drive you wont regret it. Fitting a idle valve will help with cold starts as well. As roy said if you need a hand or info im willing to help. Fitted all of mine and then chris did the mapping.

so iv now started to out a list together of parts im going to need to carry out the efi conversion

here goes

efi conversion kit from efi parts (ecu/loom etc)
efi inlet/tb/fuel rail set up from michael tierney
efi fuel pump either mk1 golf or cosworth
efi fuel pressure regulator
fuel swirl pot to be fitted in boot
throttle position sensor, air temp and water temp sensors from efi parts
wasted spark coil pack and ht leads from efi parts
saab red injectors
trigger wheel and sensor from efi parts

im hopefully going to do most of the fitting with help from others ;) of all parts before it goes upto efi parts for mapping

if you guys can think of something iv missed off above then please let me know

massive thanks to roy for sending me his pre welded trigger wheel set up for the cost of a pint at the next classic car meet :)

in other news i have now sold my old faithful workhorse escort van to ash (redoctober) as i now have a works van again so this means the 5 will be getting alot more :agree:

i have been out and about boosting the last 2 days and in fact went to do a cash in hand job yesterday in it, who said 5s cant multi task
had some fun on the way home and again tonight finished work and took the car for a quick 6 mile drive with a bit of spirited driving in places :burnrubber:
had 2 lads in a golf r32 giving me big thumbs up and if my lipreading skills are upto scratch said "F'in nice mate"

all in all i cant get enough of the car atm really has that grin factor back on my face, i cant imagine how much better it will be when its converted to efi

I always refer back to pascals as it's the only one iv seen running bar hi 5 of course.. It was the instant power that made me turn Efi.. Granted b18 but still Efi it's the future literally :) DOWN WITH THE CARB!!! :p

i honestly think this is a great way of staying traditional but with a modern more effective twist.

there is no doubt my engine is one powerful c1j and the addition of efi will make it an even more capable more responsive engine

well guys circumstances and priorities have changed since i was last on here, short of it is my car is potentially being sold this saturday to a guy local to me, really hope it goes through as the car needs to go to a fresh home and more importantly somewhere where it will get used.

ill update on matters this saturday and if for some reason the guy decides against buying it i will then stick it up for sale on here
