This is my Renault 5 GT Turbo I have just bought. I bought it as a non-runner, no MOT or tax (because I'm an idiot!). Even the interior is all unbolted and the carpet pulled out. It wouldn't even turn over, so I have replaced a lot of wiring and it now starts (just about), after not running for two or three years. So here are some photos of it and I will update my progress.

I will defiantly need luck just found hole in floor pan and bulkhead lol

your not the only one we are all in the same boat, even when we think out gtt is clean a good poke around will find some..

when i picked mine up it was stripped, no wings, bumpers, lights ect and look like there was minimal rot.. after building up and running for a few months i stripped it back down and tool the angle grinder to it with a wire wheel and i found loads.. sill had a hole, front drivers side was full of pin holes, 1 rear bumper mount shot to sh1t, the other with a 50p sized hole that we used a 50p to weld it up:D front strut had a hole, front slam and front inner arch..

lots to do.. i had some front sill sections so that was easy, than rather than patch i had my welding hero stitch in the pieces i trimmed to size.. looks really tidy when/where access with the welder allows..

poke around, find it and fix it.. its pretty painless, lots of prep and then get someone in to weld it up if you dont have the gear..

couple of rot pics on my profile but heres a nice one..:)

I see wat u mean I just been threw of mine found some more but not to bad and I got me own welder so plenty to do how long did urs take to finish then

i cut all the rot out and made nice straight lines to work off, then sat and made all the bits to fill.. these took me a few hours each as i was going for flush patches, not surface.. then carcrash off here came over and spent a couple of hours welding the pieces in.. i did the front inners myself as i need to make a piece, weld it and then make others etc that took a while..

i spent a week of evenings prepping and then a weekend sorting the rest out.. i say it like i did it all in a week, i dragged it out over about 5 months:laugh:

put the effort in and it'll look like you were never there... :)

Just had a look at ur pictures FairPlay there a nice couple of cars I also want to make it look like I haven't been there I want to do all the welding and then hopefully I can get all the running gear sorted then take engine out and freshen up but Gota do the rubbish jobs before I can do fun stuff lol

thats the way to go, get it solid and then worry about the rest... people spend thousands on these things and then one day the mot man points out a hole, then another and before you know it the feckers broken:(

best thing you can do is get involved with the local members, everyone will always help each other out and with these cars we often need it.. :D

dangerous dave
03-01-2012, 21:28
take a wire wheel to the floor pan and it might clean up some of that.. the battery trays a bugger, i wonder if its easier to weld it from the top or underneath with the dash out..

i've not spent much time in a 5 with no dash..

Tony Walker
24-01-2012, 21:18
Its best to do it the way your doing it, step by step its getting more and more solid. Thanks for the comments and if u ever need advice you can give me a ring. Looks like your doing a good job anyway :agree:

24-01-2012, 21:37
All the work is done myself ,just doing the engine now ,it's time and money plays a big part in it ,see my thread on here ,still got loads to do but like u said worth it

Looking good mate, on with a similar project myself just a bit further down the line...

Have a look at my project THREAD (http://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=3234), If you need any of the repair panels I've got loads of spares for sale, theres an advert somewhere on here.

Tony Walker
24-01-2012, 22:11
Its a safety devices cage, fitted myself, welded plates for the mounting points(as the inner sill isnt really attached to the floor by anything more than sealant) then big plates underneath the floor with big repair washers and high tensile bolts. i had the center console and seats out but the dash was still in place. if your able to do the work your doing now then your more than able to fit a cage :agree:

chris
16-02-2012, 19:36

Good work fella, don't get dishearted by the cost of the paint, it'd been a lot worse if they had to do the welding aswell

chris
11-03-2012, 22:04
Cheers lads yea i will underseal it before it goes to get sprayed the biggest problem i am gunna have is sorting where all the pipes go cos alot where off when i had car

13-03-2012, 18:54
Think were both in the same boat here mate, bout a pair of tatty tungys between us  (have a look at my build thread on here)
Hows it coming along? Looks like lots of progress made so far, looking good :agree:

chris
13-03-2012, 20:03
Yea its ok took gearbox off engine tonite its hard to keep a good progress when theres so many things to buy that you cant afford all in one go but see yours is comeing really well are you a mechanic or just self taught

djinuk
13-03-2012, 20:46
well done, great project read :)

Phil r turbo
13-03-2012, 23:18
Sounds good mate. Have you got any plans for the engine while it's out? Tell me about it, there's so much I want but can't afford aswell! Yeh self taught on motorbikes then progressed onto cars, now working as a mechanic for VW :cooter:
Have you got a rust patch on both front footwells?

chris
14-03-2012, 12:04
I only had rust on o/s footwell but sills both side i got a t2/t25 turbo i want to cam it and change exhaust manifold nothing too mad what bout u

Phil r turbo
14-03-2012, 13:40
What cam you planning to get? Think a 270 would run well with a t2/25 depending on boost level. I went for a full t25 with a 285 cam running @ 20psi (when it's back in).
I've got a long spec list, have a look on my profile. What's left is pretty much bodywork, planning on fitting new sills next month.
Have you done all the work yourself?

chris
14-03-2012, 19:10
I thought a 270
i have just stripped the engine down and the piston and liners are in a bad way 2 have scored the liners quite bad yea i do the work meself i am a truck mechanic. i hated doin the sills its so boring but its nice when you know you havent got any rot left to do are you guna tackle the sills yourself

Phil r turbo
14-03-2012, 19:51
ah bad stuff mate, looks like your gona have to pay abit more money into it.
Yeh I was quite relieved after doing the footwell just knowing theres less rot to worry about. Nah Im not the greatest at bodywork so gona shell out for my mate to do the sills as hes done a few sets before. How long did they take you?

chris
15-03-2012, 07:12
It took me a few weeks cos i could only do an hour here and there but i reckon u could do a side a day if it went well i had to make new inner sills aswell

chris
17-03-2012, 16:25
so i have spent some time stripping my engine down today so now got a big list of things to get

http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee393/lobster1986/renaultenginebits002.jpg

chris
05-05-2012, 19:51
Right so not alot has happend recently because i have been saveing up. so today i sprayed my engine bay the orignal tungsten colour i am really pleased how it came out i have also got my engine parts back and will be updateing shortley on how i get on putting all back together if i can reamember lol

http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee393/lobster1986/enginebay008.jpg

chris
07-05-2012, 14:48
so today i made a start on painting the engine and other little bits and getting everything ready to put together so the spec is piper 270 cam, a t2/25 turbo, big valve head ported and polished, uprated headgasket and bolts, piper valve springs, uprated clutch, lightend and balanced flywheel ,alloy rad ,alloy intercooler ,uprated starter moter all engine gaskets replaced, reconed oil pump new pistons liners ,machined crank all shells, and much more it has takein me ages to save up lol

09-05-2012, 18:49
so i have done a little bit more today spent more time trying to reamember where i had put things lol but i am haveing trouble reamembering when i took oil sandwhich plate off did the fitting go in the block then sandwhich plate was there a running nut that holds the sandwhich plate or is it held tight to block by oil filter? would be grateful for any help

What you've got there looks ok. The sandwich plate is "Sandwiched" between the filter & the block but the threaded bolt thing needs to be tightened up enough so when you remove the filter you're not loosening the sandwich from the block.

Nice work BTW!! :niceone: I love a clean engine!! :D

Tony Walker
28-09-2012, 18:20
14.7 is optimum. But if it's leaner and idles fine then that's better. 15 ish is good :-) if it idles fine at that then leave it

GTphil
28-09-2012, 18:27
13.9 Will be an mot pass, some camshafts aren't keen on a lean idle;)

My header tanks been in that position for years, never had an issue, it was mentioned that the matrix hoses ran close to the turbo but no closer really than the turbo coolant pipes. I have never had a heat Shield either.

I was thinking about moving it to the scuttle and really simplifying the coolant circut but I just couldn't be arsed, it works fine as it is:laugh:

chris
13-10-2012, 15:34
Thats ok then i thought i had seen it done before i just cut the original header tank bracket up and put it in place of the airbox holder so i didnt have to drill anymore holes i have spent the last 11 months welding holes up lol

In that case I'm moving mine there when the engines out over Xmas .. You see that's what rtoc is all about good ideas and great knowledge and advice.. :agree: I don't have a heat shield either I was just worried at how hot it got in there.. So done a couple of jobs today, flushed out the cooling system and filled with antifreeze, toped up all the levels again, made a support bracket for the air filter and was going to fit some extra gauges but need some fittings, also touched up some paint work under the archs and my black 90 degree hose turned up so all the pipes are black now. so the engine bay is pretty much finished so thanks to everyone who has helped me with this stage of restoration. i have a bloke comeing tommorow to quote for respray because the original lad let me down but feel as tho the end is in site now.

They bent the door open, so thats scrap, smashed steering collum - also scrap. Basically I need to go through all the electrics as well as nothing works at the moment. However battery could be flat.

Be very careful. Painting is notoriously difficult to get right. :)

Do some testing and practice on scrap parts that you can throw away and then only do bits of your car that are hidden, or in really bad nick. If it looks like you're half decent at it, then have a go at exterior panels after that.

DJ might have some tips :agree:
