ive only been in the world of r5s for just over a year now but my bros had a few so knew abit about them.
ive been loyal to vauxhall since i passed my test owning a 1.2i nova, 1.6 gsi corsa and then a 2.0 16v corsa running 250bhp, then i did something i said i would never do and bought a 5 gt :scared:
its a 09/1986 ph1 electric blue 5gtt. i when i bought it, it already had the tarmac front bumper, scorpion exhaust, t25, ph2 seats and clio williams wheels.
i cant find the pics of when i first bought it but this was after a few mods
(vnt, fmic, avo coilovers, interior, side exit, bonnet, yellow samcos)

top marks for effort m8, alot of people wudav seen the rust and broke it for spares rather than repairing it.
imo i liked it with the willy wheels, grey bonnet and without the checkered graphics (abit like my car really)
(i need to hurry the powdercoater up with my willy wheels, they look great in black)

bumpers are back from the bodyshop now and rest should be back tomorrow

everything is now back from being painted. new paint is slightly lighter and noticeable but i dont mind, the rest needs paitin anyway and can be done at a later date. spent a couple hours after work today messing around with the 5 putting some of the panels back on.

maybe without the roof being checkered you could keep the wheels, mirror and wing mirrors (if they make their way of marks raider!) and it wouldn't be so over powering.
The one thing that really annoys me about my car is the fact i have a white engine bay in a blue car, but if you can live with it and keep it clean then :agree:
the new paint has definitely freshened it up
Dude you weren't kidding when you said the new paint was lighter, yikes not good
im thinking that i might ditch the roof chequers when i get te rest of the shell painted. they were only a temp thing for last yrs fcs, but they kind of stuck.
hopefully it will be mot'd this week. ive got fri off work so it might make it to frog of the pod but not sure yet

nothing much has happened lately really to update about.
just been driving it and getting some miles on the new engine (400ish now)
the chequers have now been removed from the roof also and i hope that soon it shall be going in for a full respray with maybe some more suble changes.
why is it that you have loads of ideas on what to do, but by the time you actually get to do them, you have new ideas but its already too late?

amazing keep up the good work:)
finally got round to sorting out the oil leak now ive finally found where it was from
it was leaking from the oil cooler sandwich plate and the radiator where the lower oil cooler pipe goes.
thanks to my bro it was an easy fix, as he gave me his external oil cooler as he was unlikely to use it.
will get some pics up tommorrow.
as for the respray, im still awaiting to hear a date when i can drop it off

unfortunatly with et15 wheels and stupidly low suspension with bottom arms pointing to the sky it doesnt handle too well on the bumpy b-roads lol, but its nice to know the power is there when you want it :D

i did cut and shut it to start but had alot of problems with leaks which resulted in me having to repaint the engine bay again.
i did in the end manage to get the std pipe work to fit and just drilled a hole in the firewall for them to run through
its been a while but finally some progress.
yellow fogs now fitted and my clio williams carpet arrived to day. also made a start on retrimming the new seats

future plans now are respray, afr gauge, finish interior and poss some old skool renault wheels with slightly raised suspension
hears some more progress photos.
thanks to my brothers "barn find" (tungy gtt) i now have some old skool renault wheels. there in quite good condition but need a refurb as i managed to wash the paint off when cleaning the years of grime off them.
i really like it on them and it handles soo much better even on budget tyres

Whats next?
How much better does that look now :)
I'd vote to raise 5-6mm.

already got a new home... my cli-low dci :agree:
borbets now have a new home on my brothers black dci and they look awesome on it!!!
a small update on mine, ive finally fixed its starting issues and its all been down to a blocked jet in the carb (small brass tube at the top). replaced this and its first time every time now :D
ive also purchased a AEM UEGO wideband ARF gauge which i hope to be fitting very soon, then maybe i will finally be able to let it run 20psi again.
also it now has std mirrors fitted again and it all works alot better now with the old skool wheels.
more pics tomorrow

i prefer the look of light brows, unless it's an oe example. i've looked back through the whole thread and i can see you're heading towards a oe+ look now so it would probably suit that style better.
good job with the carpet :agree:
i thought about using one for the footrest
im not sure where its heading tbh lol. i really like the dub scene so tbh will prob end up sellin at some point to get something bigger and newer.

I'm with you on the dub scene mate, i do like what they do to there cars and how smooth they can make there bays look.
Combining the two can't be a bad idea, best of both worlds!:D;)

ive tried to combine them on my 5. i could prob smooth the engine bay abit more but there is soo many pipes and hoses that its almost impossible to hide everything.
also the 5 isnt really a smooth looking car to start with and not alot can be done about that.
i also struggle finding wheels that suit it that are euro. borbets worked but 7.5x16 was just too big and suffered from alot of bump steer
think it could be somethin like a audi or vw estate next
new dials are in and fitted some blue led bulbs behind them

i do miss the borbets but it got soo much bump steer you wouldnt believe. Been looking into some compomotive th mono's in 15x8" direct from compomotive but cant decide where i want this project to go now as the bits left to do are the mega money bits :(

why would you want 7.5x17 on the face of your wheel? 9x17maybe
17's would be abit on the big site. ive had 7.5x16's so im sure 8's all round shouldnt be a problem ;)
no really much has happened as it still spends most of its life tucked up in the garage, but i have done abit of work on it.
im still having problems with cold starts so had another look into it.
found that the one-way valve on the breather side on the inlet manifold was loose and when i went to remove it it snapped off leaving part of it in the inlet
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/jamesnova/5%20turbo%20rebuild/29112010048.jpg
so i removed what was left and fitted a bolt and a washer into its place and rerouted the breather system to bypass this which helped

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/jamesnova/5%20turbo%20rebuild/29112010047.jpg
and whilst it was in bits i decided to fit the std headlights and some crystal indicators donated by my bro (the cream lights looked out of place with the rest soo std)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/jamesnova/5%20turbo%20rebuild/29112010051.jpg
i also played about the the angle of the vains in the turbo and the preload as i wasnt able to bleed anymore then 2psi off ontop of actuator pressure, and refitted a 1.2 std main jet and drilled out the second stage to 1.2mm also.
the result is still yet to be fully found out as the weather was soo bad i didnt get to give it a propper drive, but all i can say is its not drivable in the snow lol. all it did was spin the wheels and pop the boost pipe off the top of the carb
and then the garage door shut again ..........................

cheers logg and modfather. it was at wsr10 but with the borbets etc.
the engine bay if by far the best part of the car. the bodywork looks soo sh*te in the metal. im still undecided to if im going to respray etc or not. im kind of loosing motivation lol
i know what you mean about losing motivation mate but try not to remember all the effort you put in now over the sh*t months will all be worth it when you roll the car out in the warmer months next year and all the meets that will take place as well mate
this is still one on my favourite 5's :agree:
cheers phil, ive been watchin you project thread also, if only mine was as mint as yours then i would never loose motivation.
seeing as im abit of a wheelwhore (my previous history of cars backs this up lol) im sure that with another set of wheels on there abit different from the norm will surely bring my motivation back.
now just to get it running/starting propperly and sort out the fueling and boost.
i did think about cheating with the boost problems and get a t28 rather than the vnt??
heres a slight update. nothin much has happened really apart from i refitted the choke flap and not it starts fine.
the only change (soon) really is new wheels. i got bored and bought a set of porsche wheels. just waiting to have the adaptors machined out to fit the r5 hub as there off a vag.
i got them for a very good price including adaptors. as yet im not too sure how there going to look, but if it comes to it i'll sell the wheels, keep the adaptors and find somethin else porsche and different from d90's

Liking the look of the wheels, need to see more :agree:
abit more progress on the wheels
a good friend has machined out the centre bore on one of the hub adaptors to make it fit the 5 hub. all he needed to do was the enlarge the centre bore by 3mm (from 57.1mm to 60.1mm). the adaptors i have are 20mm front and 30mm rear. we started with a 30mm adaptor and im glad we did. it needs abit more taken off the back to miss the rear caliper/pad but the centre was spot on.
i decided that due to the diameter of the adaptors and the size of the front brake caliper, there was no way the adaptors were going to fit with std front brakes.
i refitted my big brake conversion parts and tried them on the front. with a 30mm adaptor on the front, the brakes only just clear the wheels so the 20mm adaptors are defo not going to fit

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/jamesnova/5%20turbo%20rebuild/04012011105.jpg
as im now in the need of purchasing a pair of thicker adaptors to use on the rear, i trial fitted the 30mm adaptor and wheel to the rear with the caliper removed to see how it would sit in the arch to guage what thickness rear adaptor i can get away with.
this is with the 30mm adaptor so ive decided i can get away with a 35mm :D

hopefully the new adaptors should be here thurs/fri so hopefully i shall have them machined either friday or monday ready to go on :D
cant wait to see a decent shot of this lowered on the deck on these wheels, to see the stance :)
