Should my dump valve ppssssssshhht when i rev the engine or just when driving on boost ?
Sorry
I think the dump valve will whoosh when you releae your foot from the throttle (providing you provide enough revs ). Don't have to be driving.
Yes... when you stand still and rev the engine to the point where the turbo starts to spin, you will hear a pssssshht when you release the accelerator pedal
That's what a dump valve does: it releases the pressure the turbo built up, to allow it to continue spinning. So, this also happens when you're not driving...
Thought there was something up !
Mine doesn't , it just does it when i let off at around 3k or over, any ideas ?
might be sticking or you could have a vac leak
ignore me, having a funny 5 mins
well mine spools up at 2k!!
plus mine dosnt toosh if reving at stand still but thats coz dont full throttle it, mine dv dosnt shut sometimes which is doing my nut!!
i used atf oil to lubricate both pistons on my dv suppose this is to hevy and need wd40 or gt 80 ?? as thats got teflon in it.
Cheers guys, i went looking at a 5 yesterday and his DV was PSSHHT'ing all over the shop when he was revving, but he was giving it some beans
Even so mine sounds puny compared to the sound his was making
Nah was definately the DV, maybe mines a bit weak or something
I have the Forge "group A" DV with single piston and it's very loud
Also depends on your boost of course... when I let off at a boost of 10 psi there's a little psssshhh... and when I apply full throttle and let off @ 20 psi you would think someone pulled the air valve out of a car tire
haha
mines 14psi and sounds loud. tho if hes running 8/9 im sure it wouldnt sound much louder than a mouse sneezing
the chump valve that was fitted on my 5 when I got it gave up the ghost after afew weeks, sounded gay anyway, like a lame fart, but after one gearchange its started to whoooosh, nice technical term, while accelerating, and i was losing boost, so now running no valve, less things to leak boost without one.
Having a dv doesn't just give a nice sound... it certainly has a function! It reduces turbo wear and keeps the turbo spinning faster when changing gears, reducing lag after a gear change
flick it out of a unused button say like insert or something and pop it in the n button
back to dump valves, ,mines a twin piston, should it be lubricated or left dry?
Twin piston might be your problem. They're designed to work with cars that have a MAF (like mine) so they dont affect idle. You sir need a single piston I believe.
I bought a bailey "grp A" dv around 7 years ago but it never "whooshed" much while revving the engine with the car stationary but it was damn loud whilst driving on road........i rang Bailey at the time and they said the grp A valves dont work properly/to its maximum potential unless the engine is under load.
Hey... that's what I've been told by people on this forum, years ago. Sounded logical too in my opinion. And the fact that Renault didn't install them as standard doesn't mean they're useless... or am I wrong here? I mean... there are numerous parts that could have been designed better... like in every car.
From what i have read/seen most NEW turbo cars have recirculating dv's as standard (like the audi TT) so maybe they do help in some cases?.
Plus... a lot of high performance turboed rally cars also have dump valves... surely that's gotta have a reason...
If i chop my samco boost hose and replace the d.v section with stainless/ally pipe wih no d.v outlet would that be ok, or would it ruin the turbo?
Prob an absolute noob question
Should be fine as the r5 came without a dump valve as standard.cue the dump valve debate!
MISKY - No DV is fine in mine and alot of the members on here's opinions.
i dont run one,and i run 18-20psi all the do-dah-day with no smoke or turbo issues
i know lots on here use them tho,but about the same dont, also most D1 drift cars dont run one or a external waistgate and they run 20-30psi +
personal opinion tho,not needed unless you like the sound, which i dont
I thought that, but got told compressor surge bla bla by a mate on the plus side he was pushin my cracked piston liner from the underside and the coolant wasnt drained so as you can guess.... that shut him up!
wel............. no im joking i think compresser surge isnt good at any level of psi,
yes i know 5's didnt come with them BUT did they know any better 20 years ago? i dounht it,now recirc valves are uses to prolong the life
as we know comprsser surge puts undue stress on the blades of the compresser side
tbh i do prefer the dv to a compresser surge,it dont sound as fun lol
I much prefer the sound of compressor surge anyday, but its only by fitting an aftermarket airfilter that you hear it right? With a standard airbox doesnt the r5 'Surge' you just dont hear it?
ive got a enclosed type airfilter (below)and i hardly hear it, but i dont like it, its not nearly as loud or pleasing as a dump valve
but each to there own and i wont say it sounds horrible, just i dont like it!
Dump valves are homosexual
so with out starting a fight here, whats the major problem with a dump valve tooshing,
compresser surge sounds like someone having a fit
plus surge causes the turbo to stall and the fact it dosnt do the turbo any good..
Iv decided...
Dump valves are only good if you want to impress young chavy boys .
The female of the species are not impressed by cars that imitate bus's.
Its really boring this thread now.
only a sodding qestion
