    Gearbox whine

    Hello,

got off the "autobahn" and noticed its hard to put in first gear. Then didnt really go nicelly to second (later every time I put to second must be very carful and pull hard in to 2nd). In third all goes well but then I hear some whineing. Forth gear, at about 40-50mph some crunchi sound then wheing. Fifth gear, whineing and if you push gearstick slightlly forword its whineing louder.
Went to mechanic, told me that gearbox oil was creamy white. Put new oil and did 50mi and no change at all.
Alos noticed that gear stick is moving more while driving the car...

Any ideas what could be wrong?
Before that, gearbox was absolutlly perfect, no sounds, gear change perfect.

    Thanks,
    M

Could be a lot of things but go for the simple things first. Look at the engine mounts and make sure all is good. Check that the gear selector rod is lined up correctly and moves freely.

Check correct grade of gear oil has been used.

Agree with Matt. Gear stick and selector rod alignment and mountings, plus engine and g/box mountings need checking, then go from there

    Re: Gearbox whine

take off gearbox end cover and see if the oil feed pipe is still attached to the cover, if its not.... you've toasted 5th gear bearings and both end shaft bearings

    Well, that would be great

This monday, car is going to mechanic.
How long does it take to change gearbox? Is GTT gearbox any difrent than any gearboxes from other fives?

    Thanks,
    M

    Re: Gearbox whine

All j series gearboxes have similar casings and fitment and most are interchangeable. The problem is the gearing, final drive, torque limits and the speedo operation are different to the 5gtt box.

    Re: Gearbox whine

I have found gtt gearbox but didnt bought just yet.
Mechanic thinks its the mounts that are broken also some plastics on the gear linkage.
Today the car went to the mechanics shop and he will be check and drive the car. Its good to have mechanic that used to have gtt and loves the car.

Good news. If it's the mounts and linkage then definitely hold off on buying that other gearbox! It could be a cheap fix

undo the end cap, its 3x13mm bolts and remove the brace bar from wishbone to chassis.

this will give you a better insight into gearbox problems

    Re: Gearbox whine

Machenic thinks its the loosen nut on the shaft. He will take off the cap and chack that and if there is any other problems.
