    injured!

Anyone that knows me may know I weight train and have done for years. Recently I had an accident where I ruptured the pectoral major tendons from the bone lifting a modest 160 kg, a weight I'm normally comfortable with. The picture shows the bleed tracking down my arm.

I'm well pissed off and may need surgery. The worst bit is no training and I'm unable to work on the car.

A modest 160kg that looks nasty though. I'm pretty lucky I've never really hurt myself lifting weights...... Not that I can bench 160 mind! Hope you have a quick recovery.

    Re: injured!

Cheers chaps. Got back from seeing the specialist. I've an inch tear where the muscle attaches to the humorous tendons. The choice is have surgery leaving me with a massive scar and potentially it won't work (like stiching two pieces of beef together) or let it heal into scar tissue and hope the body adapts.

I've chosen not to have surgery and put up with it.

For the love of your sport they say!

    Is there anything of you

Hope it heals as they say it might, never great with injuries especially sport related on something you really enjoy, I am still trying to get my elbow sorted out and that's been over 6 months with no further progress of finding out what is up with it

    Re: injured!

This sucks. Ive been lifting weights since I was 16.

I serverly tore my lower back muscle about 7 years ago and that was ridiculously painful. I could barely get out of bed in the mornings and passed out several times with the pain.

It happened when I was deadlifting, an exercise I really enjoyed. Id just finished my workout and was just doing a couple of very low weight sets to warm down. It was on the last rep of the last set and my form slipped and bang I was on the floor in agony. So frustrating as id been hitting the weights really hard that year and made really good progress up until that point.

Everything then went out of the window for ages after that. I couldnt workout for about 6 months until it healed and even then it was a struggle. Psychological it was very hard watching all your gains going out of the window and in addition to that, i couldnt persue any of my other hobbies such as motorbikes, working on car, shooting, running, gardening. Really gets you down.

Still, it gave me chance to get back into video games at the time!

    Re: injured!

As you get older gym priorities change, it becomes more about the preservation of the health of your body (mainly joints), so you can carry on doing the things you want to in life (and still look good). Dynamic fitness and flexibility with core strength.

At 38 I tend to do fell running now. In the gym I do body weight type exercises and a fair amount of stretching. Both my upper body muscle mass and strength has dropped off notably as a result. But when I look around the gym I realise there aren't many blokes well over 40 and those who are, most tend to be out of shape and/or doing very little. Very few over 40's are still smashing the big weights. It can be done of course, by those who are very good in their regime/form and lucky not to have been badly injured over the years but when you look around, the statistics tell an attritional story - it aint good for you long term. So for me, I've adapted and hope to still be in there the next 20 years.

A modest 160kg - isn't that about the weight of the front end of an R5?
Have you not heard of trolley jacks up there?

Joking aside Matt, hope all goes well with "knitting the beef"...

    Regards,
    Steve
