Yes, that's no mileage for one of those engines. As long as it been looked after

Looks nice. I've no idea if thats a good price for that kind of car/spec. I assumed it was a 1.9 TDI for some reason. Still, a good engine from what I read non the less. I've heard on some forums that the 2.0 TDI CAN give injection system trouble which of course will be pricey if it goes wrong.

It's not a lot for a diesel.. As that's the later 20 tdi vag Lump have a read on the net re oil pump failures.. It is a major problem that the vag group won't admit to being a design floor!

Saying that if it's done 170k it's most likely been ok or had the conversion done.. Again though they have so many different versions lol.

Also I think these are the shape that have turbo issues.

Also have read of this.. All about the oil pump failures etc..

Tbh it puts me right of any of the new 2.0 tdi vag lumps.. The 1.9 tdi seems built proof in comparison.

Yeah should of said some of the higher power ones do seem to get bad cam wear.. I do think a lot of it is down to poor maintenance too and they are very picky about what oil you use too

Thanks for the help chaps, I'm gonna guess that all the mk5 GT TDi's are all 2l lumps, are the non GTi engines 1.9? Its the GT spec I'm interested in plus this has sat nav, although I do believe you can retro fit them in any mk5 Golf and can be had from EBay for about £300.

There's something about it that makes me wanna buy it, I've been looking at these for 2-3 months. This car in particular has been at this dealer for 6 weeks, the sceptic in me would ask questions as to why... I can only think of the miles

I think a lot of it depends on the year mate.. It's also engine code related.. Thing is all modern day cars are so complicated when they go wrong they cost bucks to fix..

Another thing to thing abou is a 320d bm? They are good motors and come fully loaded and can be had for peanuts??

I've got 140k on my 2.0tdi Octy, (touch wood) the engine's been great. We bought it when it had 90k on the clock.

Not sure if i'd spend any serious money on one that had done 170k tho, if you get a bargain and can do the maintenance work yourself then i'd say go for it.

EDIT: £3.5k? you're having a laugh That way too much no?

    Re: 170k miles

Which is why I mentioned the 1.9tdi lump in your other thread, certainly from a reliability/durability point of view.

Any of the PD range can suffer cam failures if the oil feeds to the cam start clogging up (read due to cr8p oil, and/or shady service intervals).

The PD150 is a slightly stronger engine, so probably a better base to start from if you're wanting to tune it, but I found that engine more 'laggier' to drive compared to the PD130, hence went for that engine in the mk4 Golf I had, if you remember that?

If full-on diesel tuning isn't your plan, a remapped PD130 engine would be perfect I reckon - Nimble enough around town, more than torque'y enough on A & B roads, and it should yield better mpg on the motorway too (providing the mapper is worth their salts).

If I were to lose the company barge, I certainly wouldn't hesitate in buying another mk4 Golf with that lump in situ; it's a nice car all round, imho.

from what i understood the pd130 was the one to have the pd150 had major cam ware issues? my local audi specialists swears by the 1.9 over the 2.0

I get that the mk4 probably has the engine of choice, the thing is i prefer the mk5 shape. The only 1.9 TDi engine they do for the mk5 is 104hp and 184 ft/lb and imagine the normal TDi is no where near the same spec interior/exterior wise

Does it have to be a Golf? Plenty of other models/brands had the PD130 fitted...

The Golf seemed like the ideal next car sizewise, being derv and doing more miles. I thought for the money i have i'd buy a better specced model but it seems not the case now having a supposedly sheeite engine on board

What about the Seat Leon, it's an ok looking motor. You'll find plenty with a 1.9 engine.

Also i wouldnt worry too much about sat navs which are built in as they run dvd maps which are normally well out of date. I brought an x-type with everything on and wish i had of saved my money as half the extras arent worth the extra money you pay. Plus with everything being electric there is more to go wrong

the leons go for a quite expensive price if its like the FR there not cheap??I've no idea why they can price them that much for????once ppl get them mapped they normal fall into a few probs and then once they do there tricky to fix to find the problem, tbh once get mapped they just get driven hard, theres only 4.5k on the revs after that there's nothing.
bit off topic but I never understand on why golfs go for so much money???silly money as well I think......
http://www.pistonheads.com/roadtests...p?c=47&i=28722 £27k for a car with 230 bhp?????I know ill biased as ive a seat but why would you spend that on a golf??you can get a seat leon cupra K1 mk2 for say 10-12k with the same if not more power if mapped, jezzz spend £5k on a mk 1 curpra r will get you a very clean one
mate had the golf mk 5 edition 230 and the oil pump went on that did some damage to his engine pretty bad.

only the 2litre 16v diesels fitted to the better models (audi)run a balance shaft that powers the oil pump. i.e BLB engine code. Things like the Touran run BKD engine code, which has a better design pump. check to see what the Golf you are looking at
has. 170k isnt that high for these engines, the only think i would say though is that if it goes over 200k in your ownership the resale value will be alot less. - i've seen taxis with that engine on ebay with 450k!

Thanks Sparkie, if i can sort the registration number would i be able to find out the engine code if i were to call VW?

I've been browsing again on Autotrader this evening at 1.9 S and SE TDi Golfs and they range from 2.5 - 3.5K in price. Admittedly this black GT TDi model is higher in miles but it's on an 06 plate and higher spec for the 3.5k

Would be good to see a list of PD130 engined cars. I guess they have to come from Audi, VW, Seat and Skoda stables only? Are there other manufacturers who may have had a deal with VAG to use these lumps?

A Mondeo wouldn't make my list, I missed out on a Meganesport 175 diesel a couple of weeks ago. Identical in looks to the 225 in every way but has a 175 BHP derv lump with 266 ft/lbs, bummer.

my A4 had the AWX pd 130 engine i think the pissrat comes with the same engine? sold it a few weeks back with 182k on the clock still strong, mapped up and went very well and did high 50s on a run. ended up buying a mk 1 leon cupra r to replace it.

They are a great family car, I had a performance blue one for almost four trouble free years. It had been chipped before I bought it and was quick with an average 40mph around town happy days. Unfortunately it was coming up to 90,000 miles and that's when the troubles could start duel mass flywheel, diesel pump, injectors locking out, turbo failure, sensor failure almost everywhere etc I had a few problems sendor fuel pump packed in, then the electronic actuator kept jamming and sending it into limp mode. I got rid of it asap before it became a money pit.

They do a Megane 150 GT version in derv, not overly keen on the bodykit and wheels on them TBH. I imagine the 1.5DCi's are the same units in the Clio, i'd need something with a bit of ooomph

I think it depends on if it was to happen straight away or not mate I guess or a good few months later you might have to fork out the price yourself???when it went on my mates it went on the 3rd or 4th week I think but something like that and the dealer paid for it(I THINK, it was a good while tbh)if I see him ill ask him. Some times when you get problems like that and they 'just happen'the person who you got the car from can play stupid and then the tin of worms are opened.

Those warranties aren't normally worth the paper they are written on.

Traders have to take the car back up to 3 months (I think) or fix it. Private is very different however..

I spoke to the car dealer this morning for info about it and brought up the warranty question. It would have been covered but due to the mileage (over 140k) it's not covered on their 3 month deal.

It's a BKD which from looking at the link seems to be the ok engine, there's plenty of history, HPI clear....
