I started a thread for my car on the renault5gtturbo.com Forum a while back but after becoming a member of the RTOC never started one on here. Anyways here it is....

had a look at the drivers side, looked okish until I started poking around with a screwdriver and found lots of rust holes. Turns out it is rusty all the way along and I need to replace the drivers side same as passenger side.

Started cutting the sill off, can't get the door off though so this side is going to be a pain to weld.

people need to wise up to the state of these cars that have never seen a welder, chances are there f**ked already or they are due a clean up and seal before it really rapes the car..

rose tinted glasses for many owners..

couldnt see any rot on mine but i've torn it to pieces and found enough to repair and save it from death.. thumbs up if you think im a hero...

Got 90% of the drivers side repair work done now, so as it was sunny yesterday and it was also my birthday, I though it would be nice to get the car on all 4 wheels and out into the sunshine. Done a bit of cleaning up around the window and patched up a couple of areas on the floor pan. Chopped out the rust in the front wheel arch and welded on a patch panel.

    Re: My F Weg Tungy

Thanks to Mike for basically chopping a car in half to get out a windscreen panel for me

I've cut the donor screen down to the parts I need, I decided that I would weld on the bottom half section as one piece, and then cut out a patch section from the top half, as I don't fancy trying to stitch weld across the whole top of the roof to replace screen as one panel.

I found that a hot air heat gun and paint scraper gets the old mastic off the windscreen surround very well.

I decided after trying to cut everything out with a grinder that I need to buy a spot weld drill bit to help cut out the rest of the metal that needs to go, so halted work on the weekend and ordered one up.

Here are a couple of pictures of progress

Great work pal, keep it up, well worth saving.

I also need 2 sections like that, mine has a spot under the passanger side and above the passenger side of the windscreen, did Mike have many shells with decent windscreens? Its just that, the sills and rear bumper plates then mines ready for paint.

I saw a panel he had cut out at his place in Surrey but it had a bit of rust where i needed good metal, so he cut one out of a car he had down in erm, where ever his other unit is

He's got loads of cars so must have one that has a good panel to chop out for you.

    Re: My F Weg Tungy

Got the spot weld drill bit which made cutting out the spots in the rain gully much easier and helped separate the donor screen panels. Got it all cut to size and then primed the under side of the donor screen and the car, then got the MIG out and welded it in.

Still got the top section to do but getting the bottom sorted has ticked a big one off the list

Fresh metal welded in, bit of filler, primer and seam sealer and that's them fixed. The long section at the back of the wheel arch got a patch as it was too tricky to blend in a butt joint panel.

I changed from Upol Grey Stripe brush on seam sealer, to some Final Systems stuff in a tube off ebay. Its much better, the upol stuff is just useless and reacts with the primer.

Window section went in a treat, thanks for sorting that out Mike. I'm a bit scarred to do the top section of the window, I have visions of the roof warping badly, so going to see if my mate at the body shop can help out with that.

    Re: My F Weg Tungy

I'm 95% done on the welding work on the car now so I decided it was time to take the engine out and clean up the bay ready for painting. This was the first time I've taken an engine out a car and it all went well

There is a bit of rust on top of the drivers wheel arch area, I've managed to removed most of it with the grinder, just need to take the brake servo out to get to the rest of it.

Stripped most of the engine down, ready to be cleaned and painted, going to take a bit of cleaning by the looks of it... De-greased the sub frame (took ages).

    Couple of pictures...

It's really nice working on the car with the engine out, so much room to get to everything!

I'm planning on cleaning it all up and painting. Need to replace the sump gasket and seals as they are leaking oil a bit. I've got a Turbo Technics stage 3 T25 turbo on there and read that a Piper 285 cam would be a good match to it, so thinking about that as well, I'm open to advice on what else I should do while its out, any other bits that may need replacing, the engine apparently has a up rated head gasket, so need to check. I like to run up to 20psi boost on it.

I've also got a lightened flywheel to put in, a Nodiz kit, front mount intercooler, aluminium radiator, separate frount mount oil cooler, power steering.

I've stripped the front end down and have been trying to get it all cleaned up and painted so the underside of the car is like new when it goes for paint then I don't need to get under there and risk scratching up the new paint.

I have seam sealed then sprayed stone chip shield on the inner sill welding areas, jacking points and front wheel arches. Then stripped and painted the sub frame and anti roll bar.

Going to clean the underside of the floor pans and spray underseal, then get the front end put back in then clean up and paint the back end.

Got complete new suspension set up, may poly bush the wish bones as well.

    some pictures...

Yep nearly there, just got some welding to do on the inside of the car for seat mounts and roll cage mounts.

I like doing stuff myself, its cheaper, I may not get a high end pro finish every time but its close enough for me.

    Coilovers are GAZ ones.

I know what you mean, but nothing beats being able to say you built it!

How long did you have to wait for the Coilovers? I've been trying everywhere for them, but everybody saying 3-4 weeks wait.

Nothing more annoying then company's advertised in stock only to be told I've gotta wait which seems to be the case with everything I want!

The joys of having a old car I guess!
