new engine rebuild .. oil in header tank

Ok.. finally got my fresh engine rebuild (new pistons liners etc done by cgb) into my car.

I got it fired up.. and ran it upto temp .. fan kicks in .. oil is good.. no missfires no white smoke.. mint!!!..

    however

shock.. oil in the bottle , and a lot of it..

Engine oil seems minty fresh as does the underside of the rocker cover. Im thinking it may be rubbish in the lines or similar.. (at least im hoping that).

Ive cleaned the header tank oil and will refit and rerun tomorrow to see if it returns.. I didnt flush the cooling system etc so maybe i should have.

Any thoughts and opinions before tomorrow.

Re: new engine rebuild .. oil in header tank

Was there any oil in header tank on previous engine before fitting new one?

Did you buy whole engine or just bottom half? Where head from?

    nope previous engine was fine.

Was only a bottom end purchased from cgb, however head was off a known good engine.

Sure head was ok? Did you have it pressure tested before fitting.

Only reason i ask is i had this problem on my camous 5 and it ended up being cracked head

Didnt have it pressure tested but it was off the geeza with the silly quick mini on here, (local to me, ibstock i think), and it was outa his daily at the time so id be very shocked if it was the head to be fair. Just seems like a lot of oil to be residue to me thats all.

Give it a good clean out and refill with new coolant and give it another try. if it still comes back its going to be something like that or even poss split oil cooler in rad.

You still run the standard rad/oil cooler? Could well be that!

I'd be looking here first.. As said clean it all out (believe dish water tablets are good at this ) the give it another go.. Of it does it again disconnect the oil line and join them together, flush and give it another go!

    nope.

that would be water in the oil only.

this case has all the hallmarks of a cracked oilway in the head.

Same for me , I had all the same symptoms too. As soon as i swapped to a good pressure tested head, no more oil in water.

Presume a crack core in turbo could also be fault.

Never heard of a turbo cracking but easy to bypass hoses to rule out. It's head or rad.

Re: new engine rebuild .. oil in header tank

I had similar issue on the turbo after putting second hand rad on it from my Williams when I broke it. Williams had had a h/g failure so rad bottom was filled with crud, I disturbed it all and it all flushed out on the turbo, filled the header with mayo and boy did I panic

few flushed later (inc rad off and cleaned out) and it was all cleared

moral is, don't give up yet, keep flushing system as mayo is tough oily stuff to shift!
