Re: volvo green box clutch questions

I think it's the ft/lbs that eventually make it slip, they do wear out quite quickly when close to 220ft/lbs and anything over that then yes your going to need an upgrade

I got my AP paddle plate from jaffa then just used the Volvo clutch cover and release bearing. Don't think I'm yet making enough power to even slip the Volvo one, so your motor must really be shifting!

The ceremetalic paddles don't last all that long with road usage circa 2/3k miles they don't like things like holding it on the clutch at traffic lights and the like.

Worth also having the flywheel properly faced by an engineer, should make the take up of drive as smooth as possable.

Re: volvo green box clutch questions

I've had my volvo turbo conversion done about three-four years ago and i had the 215mm flywheel with the later ecu and engine from a volvo 440 turbo M reg. had three clutches within first 5months because of the lbft torque at an around 220/230 i skimmed my flywheel at work and got a 4 paddle plate made at techcraft with graham around the £190 delivered. no clutch slip after that! still using the same plate 12k miles later use it right and it will last ya!

also clutch arm from volvo is longer so lighter clutch feel! and ive not snapped a cable for over 3years!

12K....that's really good milage from a paddle. Hope mine lasts that long. Seen some proper mullerd ones come out after hardly any miles. Driving style must be the difference then

Don't paddle clutches destroy flywheels though? Perhaps just a trade off with having a lot of torque/power though.....

From top to bottom - 215mm volvo 440 turbo M reg. Taken flywheel out after near 4 years of 4 paddle clutch abuse and around 12k miles and freshened it up at work by skimming both sides nice an flat.

mine used to do a couple of thousand a time, which is a year or so for me, usually boxes would die first that was with 256lb/ft and 220bhp

Re: volvo green box clutch questions

The differing wear might be related to the different pressure from different cover plates.

The Valeo (801015 if I recall correctly) presses harder than a standard 5GTT cover plate.

For the 215mm clutch maybe there are also different pressure cover plates.

Also, depends where you live; if you drive out of you home on to a country lane and barely use the clutch then you will get much better mileage from it than me who drives straight up to a traffic queue that leads to limitless more queues, so I'm feeding in a bit of clutch for much of the time.

A few people have said to me that 1mm or so of flywheel wore away with their AP paddle centre plate.
