    Re: Phase 1 project

    Hi Rick,
yeh i hope to have mine with some paint on like yours soon! When are you hoping to get yours finished?

I've got a couple of options for painting, my garage, or rent a paint booth for £50. my mate is a painter at the bmw mini plant, so i may even ask him to paint it; but i really would like to do everything myself.

For the the interior i've managed to get hold some black nylon material very simular to the original; so i'm having all the black material replaced and just re-using the centers.

    Re: Phase 1 project

nice idea on the seats, should look well.

Im hoping to get mine on the road next month, had a nightmare last friday, after a full service i decided to take it for a spin down the country lane near my house, ended up stalling it a mile from home, couldnt start it as the battery was dead then i couldnt open the bonnet as i hadnt put the catch back on properly! cut a long story short i had to get towed home, wreck my newly painted bonnet to get it open, so ive had to source another that now needs painting

also waiting on some ats classics to use along side the original wheels. will do a project thread when shes on the road in a few weeks.

if your ok with a spray gun i would do it yourself,
50quid for a booth is a bargain, id snap that up. sadly i dont have access to one anymore so i kitted my garage out with an industial extractor fan and polymask sheeting and a warm day!

i know its classed as a 3 stage pearl but its not like some 3 stage pearls that are bad for colour matching and hard to get an even finish.....
only thing is being a pale colour you need to make sure its clean and free from specs of dust between coats of pearl, as theres not a lot of play if you need to nib the pearl coat! a bloody fly landed in my roof on the second coat of clear and left a tiny brown mark, but even though im a painter im not that anal and will live with it! - im sure anyone on detailing world would be slitting there wrists

painting outside a booth its a very time consuming colour, it took me all day to do 4 coats of base, 7 coats of pearl and 2 coats of clear. good luck with it.

wow 7 coats of pearl; how did you determine the number of pearl coats?

    Re: Phase 1 project

until i thought it was sparkly enough! the basecoat is quite creamy, so i was hoping the more coats of white pearl i put over it, it would whiten it a bit. im not so sure it did though. TBH i didnt see much difference after 3 or 4 coats of pearl.

i painted my kit, tailgate, roof and bonnet separatly and the colour match was bang on when i fitted them all back together. the only thing i would definatly stick to if i was you is going down the full side in one hit.

Will finally nearly ready to start painting . Still can't make about the kit. Two options:
    Paint the kit pearl white
paint kit to the OE colour.

Yeh i'm leaning towards that option, think i'll take a trip to my paint supplier tomorrrow and match the colour to one of the mouldings.

I love this colour, the only current manufacturer I can think of this side of a Lamborghini to offer a perl white is Fiat with the 500 Abarth.

Was this an expensive option when they were new?

Great work by the way, keep the updates coming.

I'll wheel her out of the garage later and take some better pics. Only doors, wings, bonnet and boot to paint

looooooking good! youve got a good finish there, are you a painter or just picking it up as you go along? i cant fault your work anyway! fancy a job .

im sure it will be fine but id be a little worried about painting the doors and wings separatly, i did mine in one hit but my garage is a little wider,.
I bet the neighbours love you!

whats the plans with he bumpers, original texture?

    Re: Phase 1 project

Na not a painter, just learnt myself. Yeh ideally would have paint a side in one go but had the door shuts to paint and garage is narrow. Planning to paint door and wing together. I've noted my gun pressure and spray directions, so hopefully should be close match.

Kit and bumpers need to be smoothed as in need to do some repairs.

    How's your coming along?

I used my wifes MGF to get a little practice on

I really love the colour, although its a pain in the ass to paint, 3 base coats, 3 pearl coats and 2 clear coats.

Job for today is going to the scrappy to pick up a mint drivers door for £20

Oh boy, this is going to look lush. Wheel choice will be crucial.

OE pearl was an amazing colour when it was fresh. 10-12 years of being open to the elements later, it was clearly the worst!

Silver-grey with a polished lip please

And if not, do them the way Renault did originally, a specific two tone.

Plain silvers, blacks and tungsten greys don't seem to look right.

    Excellent Job

Just out of interest, what size compressor are you using. I'm planning on respraying mine when it's finished, but I only have a small compressor. I was going to use a HVLP gun, so it's a bit less demanding CFM wise.

But you've done a great job!

I've got a 5hp petrol engine running my compressor, I think the pump is around 18cfm. The tank is 150ltr. Paint guns are devilbiss gti primer; and devilbiss gti pro with a t1 and t2 aircaps; basically t1 for base and t2 for clear.

I'm pretty sure hvlp require a higher cfm compressor than a standard gun.

spot on, slight risk but im sure if youve noted everything down it will be fine.

mines up and running and on the road now. engine and bay still to do but thats a winter project.

how did you get your carb so clean?? did you sand blast it?
also what are you doing about side decals?

i keep meaning to start my own project thread, but until i get a decent camera and a sunny day, heres a current pic of mine which might inspire you to get yours finished off.

Fair play mate it looks stunning, definitely gives my some motivation to get mine finished.
The side decals I've had reproduced and have a set ready to fit.

The carb i degreased, bead blasted, then a hot trike and solvent wash. All brackets were re-plated and given a yellow passivate. I've just just re-plated all my brackets in the engine bay.

i wish i knew how and had the patience to do all that!. I think yours will outshine mine when its finished, i tend to loose interest when it comes to engine and mechanics!

the alloys on mine are 13" JBW starmags with Yokohama tyres with a slight stretch. - i cant remember the exact size without going outside to have a look. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/13x7-Alloy...item20b75e5811
i had to put 5mm spacers on the back due to the ET-7 offset.

look forward to seeing some more updates.

Rick, I think your bodywork will out do mine, your finish looks mint. Slight difference between ours is that I'm doing my kit in matt black, hopefully it will look ok as I love the classic ph1 look?

my finish is pretty good for a garage respray!, its not show winning but nothing a 2000 wet'n'dry and and machine polish wont sort.

ive got 2 litres of basecoat i got colour matched to the matt white bumpers i never used if you fancy going down the standard route rather than matt black.

the front is down 60mm on GAZ coilovers and rear dropped 20/30mm

Tailgate now in place, should have prep'ed a replacement drivers door yesterday, but it got nicked off my drive.

Was in the garage till 1am last night attempting to salvage the old door, but don't think it's going to be good enough, I'll prim it later to see

Hi mate, I'm hoping it's going to look when finished; it's not going to be perfect but I've had the satisfaction of doing everything myself. Havent you got a nice j plate gtt? I'm in Wantage by the way.

Passenger door and wing primed today, so a quick flat back and paint to tomorrow. Holefully by next weekend it should look something like car, minus the kit and bumpers

pulling my finger out to get is together within a couple of week; had a nightmare with the decals, my dimensions for the door were 1119mm, but it should have been 1190mm. I had to get them re-printed at a cost

shall lower the rear and fit the gaz coilovers this week also got new ball joints, trackrod ends and brakes to fit at the same time.

    thanks for the comments guys

well really struggled for motivation the last week, maybe the dark nights!!!
In work tonight and putting some high build 2K primer on the arches, sanding off the the little dimples was a nightmare

Ok this project is really starting to bore my now; wanted a GTT to enjoy driving, and its spent the last year in the garage in bits. Don't know what going on in my head but, i'm so close to finishing it but i've totally had enough a the moment.

The wife who hates this car, has even had to force into the garage last night!

    Rant over

your biggest issue dude is your trying to do it ALLL yourself, just like me.. ive learn settle for doing most yourself, but pay to get some bits done..

I can paint etc, but ive actually paid to have my shell painted this tme round, simply because it takes to much outa your life trying to do the lot.
