cheers people, will retard it a bit and see what happens, i take it damage is caused over time, as its been high boost/comp for a long time, and i've never touched the timing before.
[quote=J8TRO;212378]Never go full retard
bit of progress over the weekend
got my box of bits back
repainted gearbox
refitted gearbox after cleaning and painting subframe
got the cam in the engine, and started to build it back up
got a new clutch and flywheel
old and new
still to do though...
just had 4 new liners machined down by 1mm ready to fit, awaiting piston back from 'dishing'
got a piper vernier fitted now, and baffled sump ready to go on.
got to change valve springs, and port match head and inlet then its back together
also should have some dirty big brakes for the front coming thanks to r5rich
Mark what clutch is that you have now fitted??
little update:
Tight as mate! do those calipers clear the wheel by a few mm then? or catching?
Looks awesome though!
got the head done finally, 3 hours of swapping springs and grinding valves later...
Now get that mofo in there Markey chap.
still a piston short... hopefully have it machined this week
spent a bit of time yesterday on it, cleaning the bay, sorting wires, then decided to check my water injection..... lucky i did!
turns out the pump wasn't working, so changed the relay and really low pressure. after a couple of hours of messing about ripped apart the pump and cleaned and flexed all the o-rings... now it works properly again
i think lack of w/i was the cause of the pop, as it relies on it heavily at high boost
from now on w/i check will be part of my weekly/pre thrash checks
still waiting on piston, so been painting/cleaning/polishing
finally! new piston is machined and on my old rod!
just got to pick it up 2mora and then 2mora night engine will be back in
friday nights progress....
happy oil pressure
last nites backwards progress, engine out again....
new duff flywheel out
new new flywheel being drilled
back to square one again, engine goes back in tonight (again)
I can't believe you can whip engines in and out in an evening. Kudos to you sir, my planned engine transplant has my knawing on my nails!
Hopefully once I get started I'll be ok, awesome car though, get some more vids up on youtube
engines now back in and ready to go :-)
all done, got it back in and running wed eve, thurs eve off and last night big thanks to jimmy_b for the big help changing master cylinder and load valve, and brake bleed
new master cyl and load valve
standard 18mm master cyl and new 23mm
posh oil
putting back together
hopefully give it a shakedown over the weekend, just waiting for my water injection pump to come back from aquamist and it'll be ready for some big boost
friday - water injection pump back
saturday - fitted pump
sunday - its now broken again
most likely, havnt looked at it yet but wanted to change oil pump anyway. dont mind if it's another piston but will prob turn it back down to 27 went pop at a long pull at 34 lol
got it up to workshop last sunday after snapping the only remaining towing eye clean off en route
last wed did comp test, no1 was 60psi the rest were all 130psi, head off piston out and no1 has had a meltdown
saturday was piston machining day, 4 new pistons 0.5mm off the top then a 2mm dish to lower the comp a little more
last nite put in pistons and new crank, bottom end now built n ready to go
I haven't kept up to speed with the finer details of your thread (I'm always looking at the ace pics), but I do know you have water injection. However, when you say it went pop at 34 but you'll probably turn it back to 27, don't tell me that's psi.
You absolute nutter. Lol Has anyone ever managed a reliable, everyday boost level over 22-23psi on a road-going C1J?
Certainly, if you were having joy at 27psi, that's the most I've ever heard of and good on you. 34psi though, surely =
Mark, has your car been setup for the 34psi? or even the 27psi? have you been monitoring afr's? what afr's you been seing @ WOT, do you know what charge temps you are getting also.
Also what position is your TDC sensor? only ask as on my old MSM VNT engine and the engine I built after that I had to run full retard and that was 2 different engine's.
I found the water injection on a 50/50 mix would only allow me to run an extra 2-3psi more boost before det problem's. What fuel pump you using and also what fuel pressure regulator you using as you must be needing to upgrade the pump beyond the phase 1 now and getting and adjustable FPR. Might be worth you looking into EFI if you want to fuel safely and be able to adjust timing to avoid det problem's for that amount of boost.

it was set up for 27psi by mike himself, it went up to holding 34psi after the 285 cam and tubular manifold. i normally run it at a bar for day to day use, using an in car bleed, so most of the time its rich, at 34psi was sitting at 12.3 AFR but its hard to look and drive when its on boost as its savage
my TDC is fully advanced, on a high comp engine its bad news, but i did run it for years with no problems. fuel pump is whatever mike48 fitted and its got an FSE fuel pressure reg set up on the rollers at jamsport.
oli's 5 put me off EFI as i run a VNT and wouldn't get rid just for EFI, plus it cheaper for me to keep putting pistons in (i have a stockpile now) than go EFI
I can imagine @ 27psi it's very savage let alone 34psi your mad.
VNT + Advance TDC + High Compression = is not good
With the new compression maybe you should look into mappable ingition getting rid of the old GTT AEI and slipping a 16v coil pack in it's place and having seperate management just for the ingition would be well worth it and still retain carb have a word with Logg as he has done it recently on his 5 and I would say it would be a very good benefit for your 5

Mark have to say my mega jolt has transformed my car at 16 psi feels like 20-22 on old management at 22-24 its bloody amazing. just make sure the trigger dont slip ala mallory park, thats what caused my det. If you need any help if you do go this route just ask me
productive evening last nite, got engine off the stand, flywheel and clutch on and bottom end back in the hole, head on and most things connected back up. just need to put on rad, intercooler and cooling system and its back again
