    Phase 1 project

I bought my phase 1 a few monhs ago after a 12 year break from owning a R5GTT. It needs some work to bring back to its former glory. If done a few little jobs like, new fuel pump relay and rebuilt the turbo.

I've just sorted my garage out so i'm ready to make a start of resotoring her. she's pearl white at the moment, but she will end up electric blue as its my fav colour and i cant be arsed with the effort in spraying pearl white. Some pics as it stands

    Oh a colour change....

Personally love the look of the car, looks very clean and original... unless you have the budget I wouldnt want to respray the car (them stickers on the side will set you back the best part of £500)

Yeah dont colour change it pearl white is a great colour.Unless your going to strip it down and have everything painted (ie engine bay, shuts, boot floor) it just wont look as nice.

Looks a clean standard car in the picture

    Re: Phase 1 project

Its going to be stripped to a bare shell over the coming weeks. It needs a new windscreen surround (hopefully be making a start over the weekend), new drivers door and the paint work isnt very pretty up close. All down the drivers side the paint has bad cracks from a poor attempt of painting!!!

I think the electric blue phase 1 below looks stunning

Yeh mine is the one from clacton, I went down with the trailer to collect it.

The kit will need painting even if i stays pearl white. The white fibreglass is fairly marked, scratched and chipped in places. Oh i'm all confused now with the colour choice

Hi Luke, I have had and E reg with the electric blue and the pearl white like yours, very nice colours, but rust was a big problem on both.

Alright mike yeah i love mine to bits.Touch wood rust is'nt a issue on it.Only a tiny scab under the o/s/r window which is being done.Guess the fact its only done 67'000 and been dry stored for 7 years helped.

I have a pearl white ph1 and I wish I'd restored instead of tuning it, would be worth alot more now and would get far more attention

trust me fella, either restore it too mint standard pearl white condition or if your really set on a blue ph1 sell it and buy a less rare ph1, like jimmy_b's

    https://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=15543

can't believe he wants to sell now its finally solid

Thanks for comment guys, I'll stick with the pearl White then. The plan is to restore to standard spec. The car is solid, it's only done 65k and the only rust ive come across is the windscreen surround.

There probably only rare due to Mike owning so many!
I agree with keeping the same colour, i changed the colour on my ph2 and its a lot of work to get the body and inside and then engine bay done, still havent finished mine, maybe later this year :P

I feel like the cat that got the cream today, I've removed the front end and side skirts to find NO RUST anywhere, I really am shocked but very happy

Slightly annoyed that i damaged a couple of fixing lugs on the side skirts, I'll just fabricate some new ones and bond them in place.

Also removed the windscreen panel, fairly straight forward. I havent removed any of the panel on the A-pillar until if preped the replacement. Fingers crossed the wife will give me some more garage time tomorrow.

    Some pics of today's efforts:

Nearly got the replacement panel ready to be welded in place, its been a right pain the the ass removing a second hand panel in one piece to use again!!!

I've been offered some new Gaz coilovers at a very good price, dont what to do, fit standard or coilovers?? Kind of leaning towards the coilovers as i want to drop the ride height slighly.

Pace has been a bit slow lately, was hoping to be further along now, but hey! Windscreen surround has been shot blasted and is now all prep'ed and epoxy primered. Finger's crossed i'll get it welded in this week.

Gaz coilovers arrived this morning, nice n new. They have come with 225lb springs, any know if these springs are ok as there has been a lot of talk about spring selection.

Looking good - very solid under all the kit as well, like you say!

Definitely keep it white. Take it from someone who colour changed their own car.. I wish I kept mine red. If I ever get mine re-sprayed again, it will most probably be going back to that colour.

    Re: Phase 1 project

Just thought i'd share a little uni project i'm designing to fit in the GTT. Its a real time incar monitor, it can display a max of 4 channels. At the moment i've written the code to display engine temp, air temp, battery voltage and coolant level warning.

I've got a float sensor to mount in the header tank to monitor coolant level.

The good thing with this is that I can fit any sensor a want and display the reading, although i need to do a calibration and amend the code. next job is to fit and calibrate a pressure sensor to measure boost pressure.

    Anyway here are some pics

If you could add afr, egt and/or act into the equation as well, and then able to make/sell them to club members for a fair price you'd be onto a winner there

    Nice ph1 project too

Yeh i can fully configure the code to include thresholds, I've currently got the coolant level channel to display a message and sound a buzzer if the coolant drop low.

I've got the board designed and had 2 prototypes made, so all the tooling cost for the PCBs are done.

When i've got the uni project handed in I'll have a look into the possibility for supplying these if there is any interest. I'm fitting one to my wife's MGF as she has had a close shave after dumping her coolant over the M40.

Next is to model a carbon mount facia on CAD, maybe in place of an air vent?

    Re: Phase 1 project

I've had a couple of hr's out in the garage this evening, and I've got most of the panel welded in position.

I'm not sure what to do now, I was planning on a complete restoration in one go and its probably going to be off the road for about a year if i go down that route. I've had a 12 year gap in owning a R5 and I really want to drive it this summer.

So I think I may get the bodywork sorted and re-paint it and enjoy driving it this summer. Then maybe do a engine rebuild and powder coat the subframe over the winter.

Really hitting the car now with as much time as i can (without the wife leaving me). Paint is ordered, body is currently being prep'ed and the interior is being re-trimmed.

Hoping to get it painted by the end of this month, treated myself to a new devilbiss gti pro gun

    Some latest pics.
