    R5 gtt not engaging gears

Got a friend who has just put his engine in after a bottom end rebuild, who accidentally then put the clutch release bearing in the wrong way so it got shredded up a new bearing has been slipped in place but car is not engaging gears now. Now I haven't seen the pressure plate and i didnt put the new bearing in but could the bearing getting mashed up of caused the pressure plate to get damaged? Thus not engaging gears, it did all work before. I have checked clutch cable connections and all seems good but no on off feel like you would normally get with the valeo clutch doesn't feel that stiff at all.
    Any ideas?
I do have a spare pressure plate that we could put on.

Ohhhh FFS.. you do get involved...... when the engine was out the words change the clutch were utterd.

Is it really still not running?

Could the fact that the shredded contents were not removed from the pressure plate have anything to do with this ?

It runs just doesn't select gears properly all the pieces are out as I put them together last night to make up the bearing. But I am thinking pressure plate damage, which I do have a spare plate, just don't have the time to go over again before Nat day to fix it, I need some local peeps to help him do it. I can and will post it to him so he has the plate it will just need fittingand torqueing up correctly

I could do what ever needed if the car was at mine as I waste 1 1/2 hours give or take traffic in travelling to and from if only you all lived closer

Infact we have had it out twice that engine. and really i should have done the baring but left Him to put it in .... he did say he had put it on correctly.

I cant help anymore as when i suggested change the clutch and clear bits out the pressure plate i got the piss taken out of me.

This is really pissing me off now.... surly he can get it done with out sombody peering over his shoulder he has a haynes manual.

It's the same clutch as before and wasn't touched it was working before my friend (not me) put the new release bearing on the wrong way around and being mashed up. Could this have damaged the clutch plate forks? Which would cause lack of gear selection although we managed to get into reverse last night with some effort.

???not sure . I defo think clutch related as the clutch pedal just doesn't feel right. You know you get the on off feel you get with the valeo clutch wasn't getting that feel g through the pedal and the pedal was ratchting fine so that makes me think clutch cover plate.

if the bite point is OK it probably isn't clutch related

sounds dodgy, put it in gear, hand brake off, try and push it along as you squeeze the clutch pedal. You can find the bite point that way.

I dont mean it to sound harsh or like a ****... but i have an extremely bad back and ive tried and tried... and mountains of sound advice falls to silent waters amoung the valleys that spiral through them.

Life swirls and drifts in strange ways and finds a path like water, advice can act as a stopper, a dam some might say.

When the dam has been built with poor foundations the structure will struggle to cope with incresed pressure.

You can strengthen the dam and it will last but only if the dam is strengthend as instructed.

My fear of weak foundations, and poorly strengthend foundations only leads to the spirals of water engulfing the poor and innocent.

Thus suffercating all involved or for few survivours bringing them down and by the wayside.

CAn you get the car onto stands (safley) & put into 1st, then see if he other gears works as they should.. either that or bump/tow & test...?
It's not the cable stretched or the rachet not engaging is it ?

Re: R5 gtt not engaging gears

Well after 5teveL did alot of playing with the gearbox linkage with no real effect apart from loosing gears fully. It turns out that the clutch cable has stretched by a considerable amount around 4-5" longer than it should be. Looks like a new genuine Renault clutch cable is required (5teveL done some bodge on the exisiting clutch cable with jubilee clips to take up some of the loose cable which has made things a little better).
Does anyone have the part number for a Genuine Renaut clutch cable?
