    Dual mass flywheel

    I'm trying to diagnose a seized engine on a 2006 Passat engine number BKC 743465 105hp 1.9tdi

Anyhow It's starting to look like the cause might be a clutch / starter / flywheel problem. I've removed the starter motor tonight and need some advice...

With the starter removed I can put my hand into the space and touch the clutch cover with my fingers, i am able to rotate the cover about 10 degrees without the flywheel turning. See pics below.

Now I assume the car runs a dual mass flywheel? Does anyone know anything about dual mass flywheels?

Is this movement normal? I guess not. If not and the flywheel / clutch is damaged is it possible that it could be the cause of the locked engine?

I know this is a long shot but thought some of you guys might know??

    Cheers Ashy.

    Re: Dual mass flywheel

a dual mass fly wheel should have a small amount off movement an yes the clutch should move on the inner part of the flywheel. if the fly wheel is worn usually will cause vibration which can be felt throught the clutch pedal. iv never know one to cause a full lock up on the engine. might be worth droping the cambelt off to see if its top end or bottom end of both that have locked up

a few years ago i was asked to have a look at one of these
guy had turned it off and it woudnt turn over
he,d fitted a new starter but it still woudnt turn over so he suspected a engine seizure
when i checked it the altinator had siezed and locked the engine on the belt
    quick easy fix

    Re: Dual mass flywheel

common sign for dmf failure is mettalic dust around starter! also dont think it should move that much by hand! comon fault on transits about £800 to replace on the transit ! and causes all sorts of symptoms! mettalic dust also fooks starter causing it not to engage! there are solid flywheel kits about! but there not as smooth and some have been known to affect the dynamics of the crank

Yeah the excessive movement will be a worn cush drive between the wheels. Max movement should be about 10mm, or at least on bmw's it is. Unless one part of the flywheel assembly has jammed up/come apart, i doubt its that marrow.

I've known cars to be reverted back to solid flywheels.

    get the welder in there.

at work (pug) we have issues with dual mass flywheels, apparently GSF do solid flywheel conversions for some VAG cars

    Re: Dual mass flywheel

nasty mess this! Have a look...

    Ok here we go

Now interstingly now I know what the problem was I now Know why all these little bits of metal are that were on the undertray. At first I thought they were links of a chain that somehow managed to get flicked up off the road and caught on the tray?!?! Not sure why. But now I can see they are bits of the spring from the clutch.

Not too bad then marrow. Better than the 1.8t's which seize up completely.

Yeah spins over fine now... Just want to check the cam belt is still aligned correctly. I guess there is a possibility it may of jumped a tooth when the engine suddenly locked!

But like you say the box will be fine, just need to replace the clutch and flywheel.

Which flywheel did you use Chris? was it a G60? apparently I could go for one of them as a direct replacement. Any idea where to get one?
