    Hello & Basic Question

    First post!

    Hi Everyone,

I'm pleased to say I'm now a paid up member to the club. I'm looking forward to working my way through the site and getting in touch at some events.

I was born in 1980 and the Renault 5 GT Turbo was the car of choice when I got my licence at 17 (and I wanted a bass tube etc. etc.!) Unfortunately usual financial and insurance woes left me with a rather more mundane car.

As part of an early mid life crisis I'd like to get a R5 GT Phase 2 as a second car. I'm looking for a 'stock' car in white and will be spending around £5k and am prepared to wait to find the right car.

I'm no stranger to big servicing bills (have owned Porsche, Mercedes etc. and had main dealer costs) so I don't mind running costs and regular maintenance *but* my question before buying is really the parts availability and specialist servicing for keeping a GT Turbo on the road. I live in Central London and wondered if it's relatively easy to find a place that will service and maintain the car to keep it in tip top condition? I've heard that parts are difficult to come across so does this get really specialist and end up having to be a DIY job?

Any advice appreciated, excuses if this is a basic question!

    Thanks,

    Matt

    Re: Hello & Basic Question

Servicing is really easy and the same as any other car really, the 5 doesnt need any specialist servicing.

Parts are easily obtainable, a lot can be bought from local car part factors still, and theres a few specialists who break the cars and can supply bits if you cant get them from elsewhere.

Im in the middle of rebuilding mine and ive had no problems at all finding pretty much every mechanical bit I need new.

Price wise, parts seem to cost pretty much the same as any other car so they are cheap to run.

    rabbitstew,

Thanks very much for the information, very reassuring to hear. I can crack on with my search. Saw a nice one on eBay but looks like that's been snapped up already.

    Good luck with the rebuild.

    Re: Hello & Basic Question

General maintenance is a cinch and cheap, but any kind of tuning or diagnostic stuff really requires a decent Renault specialist mechanic, a good RTOC member close by, or for you to know the car yourself. Consuming the information on the site is a good start and ask any questions you need on the boards.

A lot of parts are still available new or reconditioned. Have a look at GT Turbo spares' website.

Thanks guys, very reassuring to know. My DIY efforts in the past have been fairly poor, no matter how much I watch Ed China on Wheeler Dealers!!!

I'd like to find a good mechanic to deal with it once it's bought, I live between London and Peterborough so hopefully between the two places I'll find someone good that knows what they are talking about.

Just got to find a good one, am scouring the boards to learn as much as I can in the interim....
