You will need a laptop with a serial port on, or can get a USB to serial convertor

Re: Lead to connect ecu to PC

Bigfoot, I guess in the absence of a decent length serial to USB cable the USB end of the lead can be extended by being joined to another USB cable using a female to female adapter without too much hassle. Or indeed, you can buy female to male USB extension leads that run to very long lengths. All very affordable

Re: Lead to connect ecu to PC

    Just looking at the 420d:

It's difficult to see what USB connection that is under 'PC'. It almost looks like 'USB Mini B' rather than 'USB Micro B'.

If it turned out to be 'Mini' rather than 'Micro', then you'd need one of these instead.

Re: Lead to connect ecu to PC

Here is the guide from Wikipedia:

Left to right (ruler in centimeters):
    • Micro-B plug
    • UC-E6 proprietary (non-USB) plug
    • Mini-B plug
    • Standard-A receptacle (upside down)
    • Standard-A plug
    • Standard-B plug

If you're struggling with the cabling at this level, I'd advise getting someone to do the install

If ever in doubt guys just drop me an email. Work emails are read and relied to daily

You worked it out Jack, its a standard mini USB. No serial or other adapters required.
