    new mot law regarding exhausts

just thought i would relay this new info to u incase this might cause u a problem on your nxt mot if u have an aftermarket exhaust........this has come from vosa from immediate effect..

"testers will now assess the level of exhaust noise at all engine speeds required for the exhaust emmisions check.we have also made a slight amendment to the reason for rejection, which now makes it clear that the comparison is with a similar vehicle with a STANDARD silencer in average condition"

Thought they may have had a limit to what a standard one was as in DB rather then by ear if you get me, but hay hoo. I guess there aint ways round it anyway. I got a right moan from our MOT guys at work for my exhaust last year, that will be me getting pulled this year then...

Those butterfly valves that go in your exhaust and close for economy / quietness, and then open for performance (and obviously it will be louder) spring to mind. Either that or ram some wire wool in the backbox before the MOT. It would have to be in deep though.. Then use a coat hanger to get it out or something.

Speaking of exhaust flaps, deano works for merc trucks and got a exhaust brake flap thing that we was going to use on civic turbo. With this we could use std system so nice and silent and when we wish to set car up or run at pod move the flap on the pipe and run it as open down pipe as a full 3" system.......

seriously, buy an electric exhaust cutout valve. you can use them with stock or any exhaust as they come in different sizes to suit.

The ones I've seen work with an actuator type setup to open and close the flap!!

how do you mean ashy.? im assuming pressure would have to build up behind the actuator before it opening.??
i personally think these electric ones are great as you have full control. you can fully or partly open the cutout flap to suit your needs.

The actuator is controlled from the boost circuit, same as the one on your turbo, it opens when you are on boost which is when you need it to!

Im not sure of the consequences of having the valve fully shut until the boost kicks in (Unless the N/A back pressure causes it to open). - On my car, the exhaust pipe itself splits into two shortly before the backbox. One is totally open, with the actuator on the other pipe, so there's always some gassing passing through unrestricted.

im assuming this is for new vehicles only. it would be too time consuming to log all vehicles made in the last 20+years.

nope across the board m8...........but lets face it it just depends on how switched on your tester is and if he is in a good mood that day and how you are attitude etc....but its clear cut now for the tester tbh.....

They've recently brought in a law in Oz that Exhaust Shops cannot make an illegal exhaust and fit it to a car(i.e. too loud) as they will be liable, not the owner!
