Most likely poor earth! There a bunch together on a ten mill bolt below the light, best to whip the bumper off for easy accesses, give it a good clean up.

Re: Side/headlight Problem HELP needed pleeze

right really p1ss1ng me off now this car, i removed all the headlights and bumper and cleaned the earths, still the same i then removed all relays its still the same

but it only DOES it with ignition ON not when off

im getting 7volt on the white dip wire when the ignition is on too when it should be 0v, im at a lose id rather rebuild a engine than do a wiring fault, typical right at the end before the mot, a mate alone the road said i should check the rear clusters incase its casing the problem, ive checking the haynes manual but im not that sure, i followed the loom on the os and it goes in the chassis

    couldnt follow it further

    pleeze help thx mick

The loom comes out inside the car footwell area! Big rubber bung that comes out at a 90 deg. You may have a broken wire somewhere, so when ing on, some thing else is sending/taking power by the sounds of things? Just thinking out loud here.

Here, just dug out a pic if that's any help, you can see where the other end comes into the cock pit, one either side. Maybe try swapping one over if you got a spare if any just to rule that out?

Passenger side is the one with the "death connecter" on the end!

Re: Side/headlight Problem HELP needed pleeze

I can't remember as was a year ago I pulled it all out. So looking forward to putting it all back in. The other side, I "think" does things like fogs lights etc? Without having a proper look I can't really say.

Chase back the wiring off the lights and that will be the side your want to have a look at.

Most likely some where between the short bit of the loom could be the problem? But best to pull any casing/cover off the loom where possible engine bay side to try look for damaged wires. Just remember, clean clean and more clean! Just because they look clean, doesn't mean they are, this is a Renault were talking about remember.

Side note, it may pass like that, as long as they only light up when switched, mot man may not notice? Could be down to him if low/poor output is a fail or advisory. Although, it's not really recommend safety wise to have dull lights.

I think it's the passenger side. Well, if you can't find the fault, you may get a pass with it like that then going by what you said buddy.

Re: Side/headlight Problem HELP needed pleeze

    DAY 3

found where the multi plugs entered cockpit and did a visual/disconnect/reconnect with some wd40 all looks good no rusty connections or broken wires

when the plugs were disconnected the 7v connection on the dip wire went, i think the stalk maybe at fault as it on both sides at the same time

to replace the stalk do you need to lower the inner steering coupling?? as it wont pass the top part of the dash again thanx mick

If you don't want to be yanking your dash about and risk something snapping then I would recommend unbolting the collum. Two bolts and two nuts, can be a bit tricky. I think the stork is 2/3 trox screws.

Does it do it with ignition on only? My old renault 11 turbo used to do this with ign on. It will pass an mot ok.

Sorry to say you are looking for a problem that IS NOT there...

Most early french cars have , what is called , a dim dip relay... when you switch on the lights it does power up the headlights... dim dip.... ... its how they are made and it shows that the wiring is OK..

this is perfectly normal.. sorry to tell you after you have spent time trying to FIX it...
