    Rear subframe/torsion beam bearing upgrade

I recall there being a thread on here a few year ago now about someone getting some metal inserts made up to fit sealed roller bearings in the torsion beam arms instead of the bushes that they have as standard.

Way back whenever it was I actually had some brass inserts made up but now can't find the thread in question, anyone know which one i'm talking about?

    thanks, Lee

I remember thread but think people were against idea due to bearing failure issues. i'll have a look back in my posts now.

Ha I did look but I admit never went back that far! thanks

So people were against it due to bearing failure? surely it's subjected to no more load then say a wheel bearing?

Re: Rear subframe/torsion beam bearing upgrade

During my research (read 'excessive internet surfing') for suspension setups on F2000 rally cars I have come a cross a mod that I would like to do to my rear beam that involves using brass as the bearing surface and adding a grease nipple (oh err) and a channel in the bearing to grease her up (oh err).

    Here's a few pics:

It's something he's done himself, so not available for sale as a kit. Also, I'm not sure if any of the bits are OE? Someone who has stripped their Rear Beam might be able to interject?

I made a roller bearing effort a few years back for mine
    cost about £50
theres a very poor hand drawing of the bushes I had made on my profile
the bearings came from ebay cost pennies

Ah yes that's the same design mine were made to, did you fit that in the end? if so how did it fare?

    made a massive difference
but then im comparing them to knackered bushes
the cars only done about 1500 miles on them
but think of it this way you cant buy standard bushes anymore
21 bushes can be moded to fit but there about £120
if the bearings fail after say 5000 miles there a tenner to replace

    theres some stella fuelled logic

good idea much like a truck spring eye pin\ stub pin
    would require regular greasing though
if you can do this using nylon rather than brass no lube needed
however the nylon tends to eat the metal(in truck applications)so it would be better if the metal surface was a sacrificial sleeve
I suppose it comes down to £££

Scottie, have you got the Pt No and brand of the bearings you've used? I think I got the picture of the sleeve off you a while back.

Re: Rear subframe/torsion beam bearing upgrade

If anyone is after a set of the rear inserts already made up I have some in brass along with 1 new bearing, selling as i'm getting rid of my car in the future and slowly flogging the spares.

Re: Rear subframe/torsion beam bearing upgrade

It might be rather good and helpful to future owners if this could be made into and nice guide for the articles section.

Is anyone able to do this?

I would of been happy to document this if I was going to fit mine but unfortunately that isn't the case anymore.
