Track down all the parts you are going to need before you start so there is nothing holding you up when you start.

As Chris as said find the rot and remove it all.

Do it in bite size chucks, unless you're really confident.
When the engines in pieces in boxes, there's bare metal from all the tin worm you found and you can't find the £1500 for a full respray...

Re: How's best way to start a restoration on my raider

I wonder how many gtt's started as projects got stripped and are now sat gathering dust, (like mine)

Don't bite off more than you can chew, a little a time is a much better way of doing it,

personally I would start with the bodywork, take the engine out and strip all the interior and kit off so you know where you are with costs for the body restoration. Once it's all sorted/sprayed you can build up slowly and replace anything that needs it as you go.

Some healthy sums of money can be spent also, take a look at some of the projects on here, the attention to detail on some is amazing......but costly!

Re: How's best way to start a restoration on my raider

Putting the car back together is easy if you have the parts, its the putting it back to its former glory is the time consuming part as trying to source the parts, even though not needed to make it run it, its just nice knowing you keep putting more original parts on there, or better condition items.

I still find parts to keep putting on my car including little clips / brackets in the engine bay which aren't found in a lot of them.

That's where I went wrong Though it might have been helpful getting a car with any of the items still on the car in the first place, much more fun trying to build them up from scratch from nothing. Never again though.

Re: How's best way to start a restoration on my raider

I have been doing my 5 for years....! Lol

I will get there one day. Maybe the wrong way round but I did my engine first and have now started on my bodywork..

Although I did check that the shell was in good nick and not rotten previous to this.

The best advice is to try and keep motivated. And if your losing the will to do it- have a break and go back a few days/weeks/months later

Re: How's best way to start a restoration on my raider

    I'm another that's constantly repairing,replacing,renewing as I go......

    Most important: what's your budget?

If you have endless pots of cash, then start striping it all: engine, brackets, interior, exterior kit etc etc etc......go for it........but do remember to mark up EVERYTHING!!! And take LOTS OF PICTURES!!

However, if your on a tight budget, or perhaps better put, have a few quid each month, then maybe consider parts of the car at a time.

Best advice I think is what has been said already, strip the kit off and the 'easy to remove parts' and asses what condition the body is actually in.....at the end of the day, it's the bodywork that will cost the most......that is assuming your not going for 10 second quarter mile

You will find that so many on here have experience so you'll have help all along the way

    Good luck whatever you decide

Assemble a large pile of cash, and a lot of Valium.

You are now ready to begin.

Unless you are single , very rich and have no other interest that means you are twiddling your thumbs all day - dont do it.

Sell what you have to some that will do it and buy a £6k mint example, it will be cheaper and you can just spend your time driving and enjoying it.......!

That said it is very addictive and at times will drive you to the point of wanting to stick a hammer into it.

Started my R21 engine build before my daughter arrived.

    She was 8 last month.

2 kids and a mortgage have, er, delayed proceedings somewhat, as has a target bhp increase of 200 brake over the initial aim.
