The green seals are definitely worth doing. Leak badly when worn!
The green seals are definitely worth doing. Leak badly when worn!
Defo matt its certainly an overlooked part thats for sure.
Really got the bug back now
Great to hear it mate, spring hopefully is on its way soon, glad you didnt sell up
cheers mate and im glad its not gone, spring hopefully here soon as you say really cant wait take it out for its first good drive of 2014.
if the weather holds today im going spend the afternoon giving the car a detail as i finish at 12 today
So shiney!
Do you get a lot of comments about the number plate?
haha you know what i do fella
its rather dull atm as its not been detailed since before winter kicked in.
Looking good Andy
It's been such a nice day today that I was even tempted to dig mine out for a blast.
It can wait till another day though
well my turbo has just arrived back with me from my mate, so tomorrows job will be to refit it and then its a matter of rebuilding carb, fit new plugs/dizzy/rotor etc and then get fine tuning all ready for btcc at donington in april then the dyno day the weekend after.
Whoop whoop
Turbo is now back on my car and up n running. i noticed it needs a new rubber o ring for idle jet. Gotta rebuild carb anyway so all will be done hopefully within next 2 weeks.
got to tax it next week now and then theres nothing stopping me for taking her out for a good old boosting
Looks awesome matey. That could have easily been a coke can by now if you hadnt put the effort in. Top work!
cheers matt, i do wonder if there would of been enough metal to make a coke can
still got a few jobs to do to get it right as well as the stuff above but nothing major
my road tax should arrive today so hopefully when i get home its there, then my good mate justin (ex ep motorsport) at jl automotive has told me to take my car down there so i/we can finish the last few jobs off as it will be much easier than trying do it all on my drive.
whilst sorting though some of my parts im fount genuine renault fuel and oil filters and these will both be fitted when the car is up on the ramps doing oil change etc, i also received my new turbo housing studs as one of mine was damaged in transit so was able only to fit 4/5 of them.
i still have to refit my front and rear strut braces and whilst doing so iv decided to freshen up the front suspension with new top mounts/top hats and top strut bearings as who knows how long they have been on the car and they are going to be taking a bit of stick this year

once you pay online the car is taxed, so logical its on the database as taxed and you could drive it, not having the disc isnt ideal but it wont show up on anpr cameras so if u dont drive like a idiot you wont get pulled
i know this fella but they can still do you, and if you knew my luck you seriously wouldnt try it
it should get here tomorrow or latest friday so no bother
worst thing is mick id of only been taking it about 3-4 miles to my mates place so no boosting, theres a few more jobs to do than iv listed lets just say im not too happy with a so called mate with some of the corner cutting thats been done.
finally have got to the bottom of the rich running issue and will have it sorted by the weekend, i also discovered a very slight tear in my vacuum hose so was defo leaking there.
i ordered and received a new length of vacuum hose which ill fit and i have my carb completely in bits awaiting a few bits for it, couple of new springs etc (which arrived today).
iv got half day off work on friday so the carb will all be put back together and other little jobs done then hopefully get it back on the car saturday and get out for a test drive
It's like a carrot on the end of a stick! Hope this time it's all finally sorted and you can enjoy it for a season
trev you couldnt of summed it up any better
iv managed knock off work early today so waiting on my bits to arrive
Have you sorted the boosting yet?
A visual inspection of hoses/joints is nowhere near enough.
You would be amazed how many leaks you find with a pressure test. Some might not show up till over a bar.
I pressure test mine every time I touch the boost circuit.
Get a tester on there and pump it up to a couple of psi over what you plan on running and listen for leaks, they will be obvious.
You might be able to fix them by just tightening or if not then put another jubilee clip on next to it with the worm drive opposite the other.
I made my own tester with a 2" waste ridding access (any plumbing shop will have them) then drilled and siliconed a tyre valve into the cap, then I just used off cuts of silicone hose to increase the size as necessary.
Put it where the air filter goes.
well i had a very productive afternoon iv now fully rebuilt the carb and replaced all the offending items, was a good job id bought another carb as spares as i ended up swapping a few bits over.
i will now be refitting the carb tomorrow and resetting the idle fuelling and idle speed there is now finally light at the end of the tunnel
nice one for the heads up stu, fact is i never had another chance to see if the boosting issue had been solved, but id imagine the carb top only sealing on 2/3 studs and also the slight split in vacuum hose must of been a big cause of boost leak.
both of these issues have been addressed so fingers crossed its solved it
glad to see you kept it and all problems now solved.
ill be coming down just dont know what in yet. hoping to get my engine out and cam in in the next few weeks then remaped and get a bit of bodywork done. so if al gose well but i know the crank will be away for best part of a week.
*big update*
after many false starts my car is finally back on the road so was out yesterday for its first boosting of 2014
only ran it at 15-16psi to shake some cobwebs off it but the grin factor was certainly there had so many people rubber necking including a fella in a porsche 911 who couldnt stop looking at it then gave me the thumbs up with a big smile on his face
i have decided to invest in a pair of uniroyal rainsport 3 tyres in 195/45/15 as my current rainsport 2s on the front are 195/50/15 and are catching my arches on full lock, i also believe the rainsport 3s are meant to be another step up from the 2s and if so that can only be a winner as i really rate the rs2 as a road tyre.
all i have to do now is get the car to my mates garage to carry out a few jobs before its back on the road properly.
oil and filter
fuel filter
new dizzy and rotor
move radiator over a few inches so can run intercooler pipe where there is more space
new top mounts/top hats/bearings etc
fit new tyres
refit front n rear strut braces
and a good general health check over the engine make sure theres no leaks etc etc
bit of progress to update you on guys, can we please keep this on topic if you would like to ask me anything regarding my stepping down/wgt etc then please inbox me
27/03/2014
not long until my car goes into my mates garage to get all these required/niggling jobs done.
i also by complete luck fount another very slight boost leak coming from the vacuum hose t piece which connects to the aei unit, i have now got a new connector and will get it fitted when all the work is going ahead. i also have a coolant leak which iv got a good idea is coming from one of the carb base hoses, i also have replacement ones to rule that out
04/04/2014
change of plan yet again, my car is now going to my mates garage next thurs/friday i have also managed to book both days off work so i can go along and muck in and hopefully get it finished in the 2 days.
10/04/2014
been up at my mates garage from 9.30 until 3.00 today got a load of jobs done including fixing many bodges.
jobs done today
fitted new dizzy and rotor
fitted new spark plugs
renewed vacuum hose from turbo to bleed valve/bleed valve to carb
removed old plastic t piece from aei vacuum hose and replaced with straight connector
removed carb and cleaned out plus reduced first stage jet to 0.8 (1.00 standard) and refitted
dropped the oil/renewed sump plug and washer, fitted new oil filter and renewed oil.
fitted new fuel pump and fuel filter brackets
fitted new fuel filter
relocated fan relay and renewed terminals on wiring
fitted new genuine o ring on idle screw
once this was done she was then fired into life and instantly ran much better we got the idle to steady in between 13.8-14.2 afr which is fine for me, we will now be road testing it tomorrow to check on the boost were running and the afr's.
got a few more jobs to do first though including
fit front and rear strut braces
remove and refit side skirts properly
fit new tyres (uniroyal rainsport 3)
fit new wheel nuts and locking nuts
purchase 2 new front windscreen wipers and fit
some pics from today
11/04/2014
pics from today car is now back on the road running 20psi so still 3psi short of what it used to run fuelling is at 11.3afr full boost so defo room for increase.
will be turned up to 23psi ready for going on the dyno on the 26th april to see if we have gained anything.
uniroyal rainsport 3s have to be the best road legal non slick based tyre iv ever used and they still aint bedded in yet.
front and rear strut braces are now refitted and new top hats/bearings with uprated rubber doughnuts, car feels planted and so responsive on the steering.
huge thanks to Justin Keeling/jl automotive who is no doubt the r5 doctor
12/04/2014
heres a few pics of my car outside my mates garage (jl automotive/wilsons vehicle repairs) in stoke on trent, just needs a good day of detailing on it now as its filthy.
and a couple of shots of me just about to head out for its first boosting since the work
i will be giving it a quick wash off and a quick coat of poorboys blackhole this morning before we head off to the football in it, then it will be treated to a full detail either tomorrow or next weekend
13/04/2014
had a good 3.5hrs on my car today went old school and used ag srp
you can see my old faithful work hack escort van in the 2nd pic
15/04/2104
couldnt resist a cheeky pic of the car still think you cant beat auto glym srp for its all round capabilities.
not long until btcc at donington park cant wait give my car a good boosting up the A50
17/04/2014
been into autobrite direct earlier today to pick up an order of polar wash mitt, polar buffing towels, citrus wash, detailing brushes, applicator pads and an absolute bargain of 1ltr new formula auto glym srp with finishing cloth for £5
i have also recently purchased a snow foam lance and some magifoam so cant wait to try it out this weekend
i will get some pics up and hopefully use the mrs's camera which is much better than my phone
Now that's what you call an update, I almost finished me tea just reading it your car looks lovely. I bet your chuffed to bits after all that hard work you've put into it
Hi mate hope your well thanks for the positive comments.
I am pretty chuffed especially as the car can now be used as much as possible iv really regained my bond with the xar over the last 2 months. It honestly lost its appeal after the resto for a few reasons so many bodges have had be put right.
Im hoping that my brother can take my car upto the dyno next weekend to see what's what.
Good update mate, nice to see it come together
Just bit of advice, do check for signs of detting at those boost pressures when its on the road/rollers last thing you want is to pull the head off after all the hard work
Might be ok but worth checking to be sure
Cheers mark been a long road fella. We had the det cans out for a short while last weekend and all seemed well at 20psi but it will be increasing to 23 again after this sunday so will defo be checking it.
the day of the cars trip out to donington park is here so ill report back on how it behaved and if we had any fun along the way im sure we will
Well we got back from donington at 6pm and I can gladly report my car was fault free and performed brilliantly had some fun along the way.My backside dyno tells me its putting the same power out as before with 3psi less boost afr was 11.4 at wot so alls good.
The kill list has a few new victims and my god the attention it was getting there and back
You will do people are missing mine in nottingham as they haven't seen it for ages glad it all went well how was the racing?
