fitted new clutch and cable, still cant get gears, new turbo noise?

Had the engine out, fitted a new volvo valeo 'uprated' clutch, and genuine clutch cable, did this as had about 10 washers on old clutch cable and had a squeky clutch (prob release bearing), squeks gone i think, but cant get 1st or reverse, so put a washer on clutch cable like before and all is good, surely it shouldnt be like this?

Also while i was there fitted silicone hoses all round, and a new t25 turbo, been running it up to bleed cooling system etc and it makes a very different noise on tickover from the air filter, sort of louder echoey noise, is this normal? as didnt make this noise with standard t2, may be a stupied question but thought id best ask?

    cheers

From my experience with the clutch cables its always the ratchet mechanism in the pedal at fault, when i change them i can never get the ratchet to 'click' to engage the end of the cable properly, i had a similar problem with my last cable i couldnt get 1st or reverse but it seemed to cure itself?! if in doubt check the cable is routed properly and re do the pedal end. As for the noise from the airfilter, do you have any more details of the noise? is there an airleak anywhere? i have a t2/25 hybrid and dont hear anything untoward.

am thinking it could be this, just been playing with it now and even with washers there you still cant get gears, unless you literally push the clutch pedal through the floor.

With regards to noise, il get a vid and upload it later if the vids any good

Did you 'reset' the pedal adjuster, and let it re-take up the cable tension?

If it makes no difference, it could be that the cable itself has stretched, or it's routed around the subframe/engine bay incorrectly.

Re: fitted new clutch and cable, still cant get gears, new turbo noise?

I routed the cable same as previous one, pushed it through the footwell bit but it doesnt go through all the way on the plastic clip for the footwell (was told by my boss to leave that till later on how to get through), pulled cable through in footwell and connected up to pedal (didnt reset anything???) then i connected it to the clutch arm on gearbox. Then my boss put a bar on the gearbox end to stop the cable from doing its job effectively and told me to put my foot on the clutch pedal, heard the clip in the footwell bit pop into place, then he told me to work the pedal and i got a pedal. Just when it came to startup and driving it realised the problems

And heres the noise, not very clear but you can sort of hear the 'echoing'/rumbling noise from what sounds like the air filter, or air filter side of turbo

its always good practice to change it with a new one for the
sake of 2quid , i hope your problem lies with the clutch pedal
or the clutch cable routing which are also very possible causes for this !!!

but after checking them if you find out its the pivot bush ,that g/b will have to
come out again i am afraid

I'd reset the quadrant on the pedal first of all, then pump the pedal slowly & let it auto-tension the cable.

Didn't see you had already fitted a new cable, so that eliminates the stretched issue...assuming, that is, that you've fitted an o.e cable?

Is the noise not the airfilter fowling on the body?

assuming you have an oe renault cable an its routed all
correctly you could try removing the stopper, its located
at the top of the clutch pedal near the ratchet,it worked
for me,you should not need washers

No is not the filter fouling the body, as took filter off and ran it, same noise (obviously not for long, just to check)

hope its not the bush, gearbox out again will be soo long.

Has fitted a new renault cable from renault.

Wont be with the car till monday, will go through what youv said about ratchet etc, lets hope its just the ratchet hey, cheers

sometimes the clutch padel just needs a good tug toward you, both hands, if the mech hasn't reset to its tightest position then it will once you've done that. if you don't hear any extra clicks when you do this then it's already at its limit, or knackered. stick the washers back on and be done, as shackal says the pivot might be worn, which is a gearbox out job to change, washers will work OK

there was a revision on the clutch cables on the later gt due to clutch cables snapping. Most gt should have had the long cable kit fitted as this was an extra part you could get from renault. The way to tell if you need the shorter cable is to look at the adjuster the cable goes over and if it is black then i think you need the short cable. but you may want to phone renault to check what i say and ask if there is a long cable kit.

Wasnt aware of different cables - the qaudrant changed in around '89 from the black style to the white one.

Ill have a look adam and see what colour it is.

Only way iv got it working ok is by cuttin a bit out of some 17mm bolts and puting them in place as washers, used 3 of them and they must be atleast 1cm wide, so iv took out almost 4cm with washers!!! still doesnt select all gears fine, and when clutch is fully down and in gear i can feel it creepin forward slightly

tried grabbing handle with both hands and pulling towards me but nothing so im guessing ratchet is all the way back

It comes in through the footwell, then onto/over a WHITE part, then the end slots into a black part

Where's the feckin area rep when you need him

If the white part is semi-circular, sprung and has teeth on it, you have the latertype which is good. However, it may be worn. Christ knows how much they are now, but last time I bought one (about 5 years ago) they were Circa £35 from GSF.

I take it you bought the clutch cable from Renault themselves?

Re: fitted new clutch and cable, still cant get gears, new turbo noise?

    That's not resetting it though.

Make sure the cable is routed correctly, then remove the pedal stopper block at the top of the pedal, release the quadrant, push the pedal fully down, let the quadrant spring back into place, then slowly bring the pedal up (you'll hear it clicking as it does) to its highest position, pump the pedal a few times (to make sure it doesn't tension up the cable any more), re-fit the pedal stopper, j.d

If it doesn't click/tension the cable, the adjuster is knackered. If it does, but the clutch still isn't pulling, either the cable is the wrong one, it's routed incorrectly, or there's something wrong with (the way you've fitted) the clutch.

Re: fitted new clutch and cable, still cant get gears, new turbo noise?

    cheers for all input/replies

Mart sorry, i just didnt understand thats why i ignored the ratchet part, your instructions where helpfull.

Removed all washers id put in place gearbox end, then while cable was off at gearbox, removed stop, and unclip ratchet bit so pedal hung, then refited at gearbox end, then let pedal go back onto teeth, all teeth on the ratchet part are good so i think im right in saying thats all good.

After doing this is alot better, can get all gears now without any washers, crunches a couple times, and abit stiff for 1st sometimes but i think that may be other issues.

From driving with this new volvo clutch, really feels like a on/off switch, anyone else find this?

probably doesnt help that theres the common hole in the carpet from the clutch pedal, really annoying as sometimes pedal gets stuck in there and only way to pull away is a full race start as the pedal comes out . Whats the best thing to do with the hole in the carpet shy of buying a new carpet? Am using floormats, but they just go into the hole when pedal goes down, any ideas?

my clucth sounded as if it was exactly the same as youres m8, mine was new recently and used to get stuck in the carpet to. was woundering if theres a proper stop for th car.

also i think this is normal for the clutch. mine seems to have got a bit better know and its not getting stuck in the carpet any more lol.

unless ive just got used to it now, let a m8 drive it and he always stalls it lol

You could've simply asked instead of keep ignoring.

Looks like it's done the trick though...
