    No ignition and won't start

So I was driving home and my temp an oil gauge went crazy then as I was driving I turned the ignition of and there was no lights so I drove home turned off the car and then nothing no lights on the ignition and the starter won't turn it's as if its dead.. It's not the battery as its new.. Would you say it's the alternator? Why won't the starter even try? Strange

Re: No ignition and won't start

I'd first check that your battery is holding power, volt meter required.

If yes, then has got to be wiring issue. Check the wiring going to the starter (from battery). Have a looky around in case something has come loose in the engine bay.

If no, then the alternator. Can check this using volt meter again.

Also check fuses, just in case something has overloaded. In these conditions, people tend to have everything on, radio, heater on full, rear demister and lights!

    FYI:
Battery should hold 12V and go upto around 14V (not more) when driving.

Sounds like a loose earth or something like that maybe to the starter or block etc... But if not an earth some kind of wiring fault.

I know this sounds stupid but... Is your fanbelt still on? When I threw a belt once the temp gauge just shot up because the water pump wasn't turning.

Stick a jump lead from your negative terminal and to the block, see if this cures it. if so then its a bad earth to the block, the alternator also has to be earthed, try the other lead from the negative terminal to the alternator body by the top brackets easiest.

Check your main earth, jack the car up drivers side, take front wheel off and shine your torch at the back of the starter, there are two big wires coming off the back, check there both in good condition and tight

Re: No ignition and won't start

sounds alternator id change battery or recharge old then check voltage with a meter a good alternator will produce about 14 volts if its not then the alternator is shot, also another trick i learned in garage game is get the car started with good battery remove earth on battery while running as long as alarm is ok to do this if car stays running alternator will be ok if it cuts out its 100% something to do with alternator or wiring follow this to the T and you wil get your answer paul

Sounds like your positive cables melted through somewhere then. battery negative to the block shouldnt create any kind of spark lol.

It'll be worth checking the connector of death, it lives under the expansion bottle, behind the n/s headlight black in colour..

if the warning light is flicking then check both the negavite and postive conections on the alternator....take the conections off and check they have not split in anyway in the cold weather it can screw up the joints on the conections and i know on the alternator there pretty tight as well.haynes explains it pretty well on the ingition system pretty well and its simple.that can rule out any problems that you might have.....
OR it can just be a renault thing and all will work tomorrow

Get AA membership! At least they will be able to volt drop test things and check for amp draw.
Also you cannot check a wire just by looking at it and seeing if its tight

Firstly sorry for the sarcasm it's just I was freezing tired and coverd in oil. It was the one from the bulkhead on the drivers side to the engine.. I got 5mins in the daylight today and found it.. I hate these 5s at times but I love it more when it works.. Easy fix again
