Try cleaning the idle jet .
Big round brass screw on the drivers side of the carb.
Take it out and give it a clean, I sprayed carb cleaner on mine. Don't lose the O ring.

If it's a little bit of crap that's getting caught up intermittently, yes.

Maybe have a look at your mixture screw and seal?

    Re: tickover probs

I remember folk on here cleaning out idle jets and the problem not going away until they'd done it 3-4 times over.

Not saying that's the case here but it's worth keeping in mind as you search about for the cause.

I'd do a search on idle problems.

    Re: tickover probs

I've had loads of similar problems and it's always down to the idle jet with me. If the jet is clean, it's clean. It's more down to the seal. The oring you see on eBay is too thick and it never screws in the same way twice. In fact, 2 original carbs I've removed have had square section orings and not round. I'd recommend getting a slightly smaller oring from the assorted oring box you get in a £1 shop. Stretch it over the step on the jet holder and screw in hard. If the jet is clean and you do this then you can eliminate it from the equation.

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

Hi, I've just had the same problem. Overhauled my carb and found the idle mixture screw had snapped off at the end. Replaced it and all gaskets/seals. Started car and set-up idle mixture and tick over, it was running like a dream. 2 weeks later I was coming up to a roundabout and dipped the clutch and the engine just cut out. Engine started ok but would not idle. It was also a little lumpy in the 1000-1500 rpm range. Took out the idle jet and cleaned even though it didn't look dirty and put back in. Running like a dream again!
