    Piper 285 + Matched followers

As above, must not be a re-grind and followers must be kept in order with the cam, vernier not essential but a plus.

    What have you???

I sourced my cam kit, cam/springs/pully through these guys, it wasn't a re-grind and to my suprise when I installed it, it timed up @ 112 degrees

As for followers I used some that had be checked for wear (concave faces) and used the flatest ones I could find. My engine hasn't been apart since so as for being able to comment on the longevity of my cam lobes I can't and my motor only made 209hp @24 psi and I'm still non the wiser for why. I hope the followers I used haven't done similar to my shiney new camshaft........

If your willing to fork out then new followers are the best bet imo

Cheers for that Phil - I remember yours at Scoff's RR, you did quite well - what turbo are you running? and If I remember rightly yours pulled hard to 7k+, Mine starts dropping orf at 6.5k, so if I were you, I'd be a happy bunny.

Re: Piper 285 + Matched followers

Actually it peaked at 6.5k but then began to tail off slightly hence my slight reason for concern. Looking at your thread you mentioned that yours was a little tappy, mine are set to pipers recomendations and it's quiet as a mouse.

anyways this is of no use to you getting the parts your after so I will stop mucking up your add .....

Why not just get a good second hand set and get them refaced and re-hardend?

I think it's called case hardening, although I'd have to check.. My engine builder sorted it tbh

I thought the idea of new followers where all about them not being uber hard to begin with then, them toughening up within the run-in period??

Or am I talking out of my arse as usual?

Just spotted H. T. Howard have a website probably no help as they're so far away. But can always ask them some questions.

Think it's more to do with the original followers becoming ovallated (if that's a word) and the contact surface becoming dished. The tips of the new cams are thinner and the shallow end lowered which brings the tip of the cam closer to the edge of the follower, before the dish caused by old cam, effectively leaving a lip which needs to be worn down before full contact is achieved on full rotation (the follower isn't in contact with the cam for a micro second allowing the cam and follower to hit, same way as a cylinder mower cuts is the only example that comes to mind ).

A straight edge across the top and digi micrometers will show signs of wear

Surprised no-one's ever looked into getting these made? They're only a 'bucket' with a hardened face after all. Surely they can be produced & supplied for cheaper than the £16 (*) per follower that Renault charge?

    * Or that's the price they were around 8 years ago anyway.

Re: Piper 285 + Matched followers

There's two sizes as well. Not sure what they are but It's something like 1 or 2 mm difference in diameter. I'd look into having the block bored out to remove any wear and start from fresh with the larger size, not sure if that would be possibl though e.
Measuring your old ones is fun as due to them becoming ovalled you have no idea which size you need, I gave up and chucked the old ones back in as only had a mild reprofile and never had any issue with the cam ect.

    Mine are 19mm.

Been in contact with catcams, they recommend new followers but also say they can clean up and refinish them for £10.00 + vat each, so £12.00 each.

For £54.00 I think I'll stick new in.

It was a regrind, and I'd say about 15K of hard miles. Not good really. I've never used top brand oil, always semi synthetic. Might be something in that?

difficult to say :S if it had been starved of oil it would be like that within a few hundered miles. Quality of oil? :S maybe... id say thats more critical for the turbo, have you screwed any turbos?

No - Turbo's have been fine. I'll be using a quality oil from now on, So I suppose stick a new cam in and away we go.
