    re: turbocharger refurb

    Hi Folks,

We've got a T28 that is suspect. Can I have recommendations as to who to send it to for testing, and if found to be lacking, a refurb.

Basically I want someone who will do the job right and not rip us off.
It IS possible the turbo is OK and so if it is I'd like to think the testers would say so if they found nothing wrong...

I know the above sounds a bit pessimistic, but it's just a few bad experiences in the past have made me cautious.

If it is inappropriate to post on here then just PM me please.

    Thanks

    B

    Re: turbocharger refurb

I sent a T28 off to turbo developments as it was smoking, they were 100% honest and sent it back saying the whole core was actually bran new and it was something to do with the car as to why it was pushing oil past the seals and not the turbo

That in my book is honasty.

At my honest opinion from the moment the turbo is used u should sent it in order to be cleaned inside especially in the oil chamber. If it has any crap stuck there, except that youll have it circulating your motor, it will make the turbo seals go after a few miles. If they open it and they see that it needs a refurb then it's ok too.

SOrry for highjacking the topic, GTphil can you describe what your problem eventually was? My turbo is smoking like hell again but i only serviced it like 6 months ago so i wonder.

Funny you should say that The same happened to me took my turbo to them cause there was smoke on the over run and on idle. They said it wasn't the turbo in the end I found there was a kink on the the oil return hose on the sump.

check breathers.... common cause for smoking.
Try to vent the rocker to atmostphere then test drive.

What do you mean YOU serviced your turbo? they spin over 100,000 rpm did you have it balanced? if its not balanced your lucky to of got 6 months.

    Re: turbocharger refurb

Well basically, it is something to do with the oil pressure at idle, I thought I had solved the problem by ajusting the oil return pipe work, it was ok for 1000 miles or so then started doing it again

It still does it now, it was a bran new core, literally within 5 miles of fitting it started to smoke, it only smokes if I leave it to idle for 5 mins plus, the turbo that it replaced did exactly the same also, even after a full new engine, it was still the same

Oil pressure at idle is between 15/20psi.

The only other thing I can think of is there is a difference in size between the oil feed and the oil feed adaptor to the turbo, I take my oil pressure reading from the same place as the standard oil pressure guage but using an aftermarket mechanical guage, so that's before the turbo oil feed adaptor, I can't help but think the adaptor having a narrower I.d is somehow affecting the oil pressure when the engine is idling.

Either way, I just ignore it now, turbo works perfectly has no play in the shaft, has been inspected, new complete engine, lol the works and it still does it!

    No smoke........no poke!!

I have never tryed that to be honest, my breather system is very simple, the pipe to the rocker goes to the brether pot and the pot has a filter on top and thats it, the breather on the inlet manifold is blocked off.

    Re: turbocharger refurb

haha i didn't service it my own, i had it serviced on a turbo "specialist", sorry for my poor english

I have same breather setup as Gtphil, i just don't have a filter on top of the breather pot but a kinda wide pipe going down along the engine. Did that, cause i had too much oilly smell in cabin.

    Re: turbocharger refurb

I might try just bypassing the breather pot to a catch tank, did you just block the sump breather/return pipe off?

    Re: turbocharger refurb

so, better put a big pipe on rocket breather directly and aim it away from engine place, or catch tank.
S i suppose i must block the pipe coming from bottom of engine and going to breather pot somehow?

    Re: turbocharger refurb

I plumbed up a tempory catch tank today, and hey presto as if by magic.........NO MORE SMOKE!!

Cheers guys for the great bit of info,

All I did was remove the breather pot, and pipe the rocker cover and sump breather to a bottle with plenty of breathing holes.

Took it for a run to get it up to temp, then left it to idle for almost 20 Mins with no smoke.

    Re: turbocharger refurb

    Hi mate

I fitted a cheap flea bay alloy catch tank.

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Universal-...4#ht_731wt_952

I Blanked off the one way from the inlet manifold and removed all that pipework. blanked the inlet telephone hole.

I left the rocker cover pipework in and the original "catch tank". I then plumbed in the top of the original catch tank to one side of the new catch tank and the other port on the new tank to atmos.

    So far so good.

    Re: turbocharger refurb

I removed the pot, blocked the pipe going to bottom of engine and then run a simple wide pipe from rocker cover to the engines side. Iit got better but the old oily Steven Kings "The Mist" is still there. I even managed on "misting" a bunch of bike-police must have been 6 of them on the side, all i could hear was them coughing

gtphil i dont think its a sump breather, its an oil return to the sump from the swirl pot..

I can always just block it off if it causes me any issues.

It's only a temp thing untill i get a proper catch tank sorted.

    Re: turbocharger refurb

You can either block off the sump return or pipe it to a catch tank, it doesn't really matter, unless you have a lot of blowby, I.e the sump pressurises and push oil back out of the return/dip stick.
