I think it's a bit of a MISSION to get them apart, because theirs a mahoosive spring which holds them together.

If you get them apart, you'd need a big strong (small) hook to try & re-connect them.

I'd not bother trying to seperate them, I'd paint them complete & mask them to stick to the OE look if that's what you're after?

OE look? Just painted wernt they?

As thats all im having done to them - paint on them isnt brillaint and theyv got some scracthes on outside so rubbing them down, thought it would be easier with the mirrors away from the base plates but il prep them as is and give to painted like this then.

    cheers for reply

I'll second that also, propa ball ache, and even worse to put bk, not worth it as 9/10 they break as tgere so brittle. as Steve said, paint em, then mask up and paint the base plates, less agg for I know that.

I took mine apart, painted them white and the base bits satin. Put them back together ok to, i re used the spring just fitted a bolt and ny lock through them instead of the copper looking bar thing, you will know what i mean when you look at them.

when i was looking at them i popped the little plastic bit out the bottom, and saw the little pin and spring - thought bingo, went to pull it out and then thought yer il ask on rtoc 1st before i mess it up.

Iv left them for now, il give them to painter like this and see how he gets on just hope he can paint them as they are still together

He should be able to - I did. O.k. mine are hardly done to a profesional standard but I'm sure it can be done without taking them apart.

Re: do wing mirrors on these 5's come apart for painting

Took mine apart with the exception of taking the spring out. Then spent about half a day trying to work out where the adjusters went. It was only because one adjuster wire was broken and it came with a spare adjuster cord.

As the others have said not advisable. As the plastics are extremely brittle due to age, heat and weathering plus all the spider sh** on them. Why they ever chose to live behind wing mirrors is beyond me.
