    Big job or not?

I keep getting a slight weep of gearbox oil from the passenger side drive shaft boot. The rubber boot is letting the oil weep behind it and no matter how I position it or tighten it up on the 3 bolts it just keeps leaking.

I have checked the Haynes and had a good look at the shaft boot and it seems to have a bearing in the boot. Does this need a press or some specialist to get the old one off and replace, or is a new shaft a better option, I guess it comes a complete unit.

    Thanks phil

Doesnt need a press mate, the new boot goes on the original bearing

I know it's a bodge but I have before now just used a bit of sealant around the part that bolts to the gearbox and this held fine untill the actual boot itself split a few years later.

Or you could just do a proper job

I have done that last year and it's started again. Think we have crossed wires guys it's the inner, I need to remove the driveshaft end then press the whole boot off with the bearing to, I have price the part at Renault and had a quick chat. The guy said the boots probably just had it and it now has a flat spot which is letting the gearbox oil weep past.

    Re: Big job or not?

Im 100% sure i done it without pressing the bearing off in the past mate. Infact i was rather pikey and used a 2nd hand inner boot

You can take the tripod bearing off, its only held on with a circlip. The bearing may just come off?? Cant remember its been ages since i done one. driveshaft's only usually last me about 1000 miles before going in the bin

the new boot you buy will probably come with the bearing attached, and its a specific size for the gt i think it was 19.6mm or something similar, but you can take the bearing off the new boot and just swap the gaitor not dismantle the shaft and swap the bearing. its not that dificult to swap the bearing too to be honest, remove circlip tape up the bearings on the end of the shaft knock the end off, knock the old bearing off, gently tap the new bearing on with a suitable pole, i think axle stand tube(depending on make) may be the correct diameter but i cant remember.

I do this as matter of course with mine, let's not forget these cars are 20years old and parts wear, a little bit of sealant will take up any tiny gaps without the need to replace to boot, if the boot abit split then leave it and seal it
